I saw the Royal Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet on the same weekend in 1968 because my niece, Lisa, was studying at the Royal Ballet in London and got us tickets. I think every dancer stood on their tippy toes. So I asked Lisa, "why don't they just get taller dancers? If looks could kill, Lisa would have been a murderer.
In New York, the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is considered endangered, though it seems to be holding better in other parts of its range. These stunning and gregarious owls benefited greatly from mankind's agricultural revolution, as they adore hunts on open fields. In fact, whenever such a field exists, they'll even sleep in them during the day, nestled away in tall grasses. Sure, short-ears will roost in trees when absolutely necessary, but only begrudgingly when thick blankets of snow have stolen their grassy hillocks. The ground is even where they lay their eggs and rear their young! Still, they fly like any other owl on silent wings. And they do so more often during the day than many others, often coming out an hour or two before sun fall and putting on acrobatic shows in groups of other short-ears and northern harriers.

The local camp fox made a couple of appearances, whilst we were photographing the bears, this was taken in the sand dunes leading to the beach.
A peregrine fledgling perches high atop a snag, illustrating the importance of dead trees in the environment. Peregrines require lookouts high on hillsides with enough clearance to see around them and outward, but close enough to the hill to remain discreet. They are constantly on the lookout for predators. Snags and dead tree limbs play a critical role their survival. Although not hunting yet, this young fledgling had advanced in its flight and landing skills since my visit the week before. In late June, this falcon preferred the safety of relatively flat cliff surfaces. One week later, it was exploring more precarious perches, like this one and various other dead tree limbs.

Have a superb weekend!!
Sometimes, the best images are unintentional, such as this accidental shot, taken during a stroll, of Charlie's tippy-tail.

Alvin was really curious as to what was in the pot...yes, peanuts! I thought it was adorable he was on his toes. Too cute.

I love this little ones colouring.
Not sure if it is a boy or girl yet but it has a white tip on it's tail and a black spot on the other side near it's wither.
I don't often do this - I always feel that I should choose the best, or at least my favourite - but on this occasion I just can't choose. I like both versions of this photo for different reasons. This one I think shows the beauty of Tippy and his sleekness, and the flowers around him. I probably also should like this one, because it is how it came off the camera, it needed nothing. (Which begs the question, why then, did I go out of my way to produce an edited version????)
The other, edited one, I like because I tend see more the moment that was, with him looking pensively beyond. Well these are my ideas, I'd be curious to know what my Flickr friends think :)
