This is a photograph from the Rathfarnham 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 29th September 2013 at 10:00.
This is one of the most popular runs in South County Dublin and is held in support of St. Luke's Cancer Hospital, Rathgar. This year's race attracted over 1,300 participants and the run is open to runners, joggers and walkers. The course is one of the fastest 5ks in the country with a downhill start and finish. This is an excellently organised race with marhsalling at every junction and Garda enforced road closures for the duration of the race.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was a record number of participants with over 1,300 people taking to the start line.
Weather: This race was held on a beautiful autumn morning. There was little or no breeze and there was mild temperatures of around 15C for the race.
Course: Overall this course is a flat and fast course. There is a net gain of 15M over the whole course with slightly downhill gradients at the start and towards the finish. The course is completely left-handed which makes for favourable conditions. All being equal the course provides an excellent opportunity for every from elite competitors to joggers to set a fast time for themselves.
The race starts at the easterly side of the N81 Tempelogue Road and Springfield Avenue. The start area is shown here on Google StreetView (goo.gl/maps/kg7FY). The race follows Springfield Avenue along the side of Bushy Park. The race overlaps the final kilometer and the finish as it proceeds to the Rathfarnham Road (Shown here Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/gRrI6). The route heads north on Rathfarnham road as there is a very gentle incline until the junction with the Temleogue Road is reached and runners make a sharp left turn onto the N81 (shown here Google StreetView goo.gl/maps/51S2t). The race then heads south along Templeogue Road where the runners can see the course unfold straight infront of them. The race turns left at Springfield Avenue again (start area) and the final Kilometer is as the first to the finish area (Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/1R08S) just before the Rathfarnham Road Junction.

This is a photograph from the East of Ireland Marathon held at Lusk, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Easter Saturday, 19th April 2014 at 09:00. The race started and finished in the grounds of Lusk United Soccer Club (goo.gl/maps/luVz1). The marathon route followed four loops of a route around the back roads north of Lusk village. The rural roads were perfect for the marathon as there was very little traffic except some movement of agricultural machinery between various farms. This area of Co. Dublin is famous for it's vegetable growing industry. A water and feed station was provided at the end of the loop [here goo.gl/maps/A1JU1]. This was almost the perfect day for marathon running. There was little or no breeze. However temperatures were unseasonably high with temperatures close to 18C (64F) during the race.
The East Of Ireland Marathon Series aims to make marathons affordable and convienient for the runners of Ireland. The serires organisers aim to promote marathon running and to make the process as stress free and enjoyable as possible. All courses are measured to full AAI standards and have a minimum of 10 Entrants. The marathons are self sufficent to a degree although there are limited supplies of water available on the day of the race. There will be no extra frills like chip timing and finish gantrys. However all finishing times are accurately and officially recorded. This is to keep the price down and keep the races as affordable as possible. The East of Ireland Marathon series is all inclusive and welcomes runners who are new to marathon running as well as experienced veterans.

My sister-in-law and her hubby are due just a few weeks ahead of us, which means my new babe will have a cousin almost the same age. Sweet.
This is a photograph from the finish of the 2nd annual running of the Trim AC 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 7th February 2016 at 12:00. The race attracted over 650 participants and already the event shows growth on last year's number of participants. The race started on the Trim/Athboy road on the town's ring road and proceded to take an anti-clockwise loop out towards the village of Dunderry and townland of Kilbride before returning back to the Trim Industrial Estate for the finish. The route is all quiet country roads with some hills at 3, 6, 8 mile segments. Today the weather was every runner's nightmare: very cold air temperatures and from mile 4 until the finish a very strong headwind. While the weather was dry without any rain the windy conditions made a very fair course challenging. Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. This race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim. This yet again proves that a great club with great local support and volunteers can organise great road races!

This is a photograph from the Edenderry "Frank Kilrane Cup" 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Edenderry, Co. Offaly, Ireland on Sunday 22nd of July 2018 at 09:30. The race also features the Offaly AAI 10 Mile Road championships. As it is a county championship race the first man and woman from the county of Offaly will be presented with the Frank Kilrane perpetual Cup. St. Mary's Primary School in Edenderry was used as race HQ. Irish timing company Popup Races provided electronic triming and event management for the race.
The race has been held for the last number of years during the Easter period so this is the first time that the race has been held during the Summer months. Overall, the route is a fair and predominantly flat with the exception of a few rolling hills, in places. The race starts on the R441 road to Rhode from the Edenderry/Tullamore road and proceeds northwards towards Jonestown crossroads. The race takes a left and heads westward towards Rhode. A few KM outside of road the race turns southwards into the townlands of Thomastown, Sallymount, Rogerstown and Monasteroris. The race crosses the Grand Canal at Trimblestown Bridge, which is a steep canal bridge, carrying traffic over the Grand Canal between Kilbeggan and Edenderry. The course turns eastwards again and returns back to Edenderry where the course at around 9 miles meets the course at 1.5 miles mark. Another crossing of the Grand Canal sees the race cross Cartland Bridge before the 9 mile mark. The race finishes in Derry Rovers FC soccer ground where there is a tarmac surface surrounding the pitch. The weather was clear and bright but rather warm with air temperatures close to 20C with the feeling of high humidity. This made it a bit difficult for runners. However, there was little or no wind. Overall, this was a well organised raced with over 250 participants taking part.
Edenderry is a town with a population of around 10,000. The town is a busy one given that it provides a focal point for a large rural population around it. The town experienced growth in the 50s and 60s powered by the presence of Board na Mona and the ESB utilising the vast peat production areas around the town.
Every fisherman and photographer has a million "the one that got away" stories and this is one more entry. I was sitting in a right turn lane waiting for my light and took this as a zoom thru the windshield. The instant I took it, my light turned green so I lowered the camera and started rolling. Exactly one nanosecond later, a cop pulled up to this biker's right and was checking him out pretty close but I already had cars rolling behind me so I couldn't get the big bonus shot. Aaargh.
Due to a timing difference in the Canon Utilities and the UTC settings the time 'taken on' has shifted 1 hour later. My fault for not setting the BST shift in the Camera.

I found at very low price (25€) this very early French 35mm FOCA camera "1 étoile peinte" (printed one star) on Saturday, February, 24, 2024 at the monthly camera exchange and trade meeting at Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure, France.
The French Company O.P.L. S.A. ("Optique et Précision de Levallois" started the delivery of it new range-finder camera "PF2" (standing for "Petit Format 2 étoiles", small formal 2 stars) in 1945 just after the end of the WWII. The camera, that was one of the projects of O.P.L. before war. It was prototyped in the clandestinity in Paris, France outside the factory of Levallois under a close surveillance of the German occupant who banned the camera construction in France during WWII.
Then, the PF2 was the ready for production immediately after the France liberation. In 1945, the first camera's were delivered to the happy customers, but during the year 1946, O.P.L. announced that only a simplified version called PF1 with a fixed lens could be delivered and the production the French customers had to wait 1947 to see the PF2 again. Those PF2's were then produced staring from 1947 in the novel O.P.L. factory constructed in 1938, in Châteaudun, Eure, France, in which the production lines were installed for the FOCA.
This FOCA is the model-1, version-1 produced in 1946 (likely still assembled in Levallois near Paris) as well as the FOCA lens 1:3.5 f=3,5cm fixed by three screws on the camera body. Later, in 1948, the PF1 received the regular FOCA 36mm screwing mount used for the other screw-mount FOCA.
The distance scale is zoned "Portrait", "Groupes" and "Paysages". This specific camera was modified later in the factory for flash double synchronization (electronic and bulb) and the shutter cage was exchanged for a modern one appeared in 1955. Probably for this reason the time selector has two indexes, the normal black for and an unusual red dot indicating the real timing selection. It was frequent that FOCA camera were factory upgraded and the modifications were proposed to the customers. It could be also the work of a clever repair shop.
The satin chrome is less bright that in later production. My 1948 PF2B is also of this matte appearance.
The camera functions in apparently normally. The optic is also a version-1 1946 of the 3,5/3,5cm lens. The lens is not very clear but not scratched nor contaminated by fungus. The iris operates correctly. The FOCA was protected in a non-branded leather that has a nice patina and still in a a relative good condition.
This is a photograph from the annual Ardagh Moydow Glen Community Games 5KM and 10 Mile road races, fun runs, walks and challenges which were held in the heritage village of Ardagh, Co. Longford, Ireland on Tuesday 27th December 2016 at 13:00. This year's race featured some changes from previous years: the introduction of chip timing, a new start and finish in the middle of the village at the community center and, a slightly amended route.

The 10 mile race takes in the local 'Ardagh Mountain' which is a 1 mile continuous climb starting at the 2.5 mile mark of the 10 mile race. The 5KM race takes a loop around the heritage village of Ardagh. Overall this is a very well organised race with accurate courses, good marshalling and traffic control and excellent after race refreshments. The 10 mile race is one of the longest road races held during the Christmas period anywhere in Ireland and has appeal to runners who want to add a longer distance race to their festive calendar of running.
The weather at this year's race was much more suitable to road racing. In 2014 there was very frosty icy weather and last year in 2015 participants were given a very very windy day with heavy rain at the finish of both races.
Ardagh is probably County Longford's most picturesque village with many historical and architecturally important features. It is located about 6 miles from Longford town.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

The Nichols bridgeway is one of my favorite places to shoot. High rise building, planes, clouds, people, millennium park, view of loop, everything just falls into place.
In this shot the cloud formation looks like emission from the plane that is headed towards the two prudential plaza building. Sitting at the bridgeway with ample patience in freaking cold weather resulted in this.

Scenes like this are not typical when you live in Brooklyn. The cottage we stayed in while in Rhode Island had a marina about a block away and every morning around 6am and every evening at around 6:30pm I would head over with the goal to capture at least one decent photograph of Golden Hour as it was happening.
