A timelapse flight over a cloudy part of the world, spot the International Space Station radiators top-right? Like our solar panels they move with us to keep our systems and the inhabitants inside at optimal temperature. They circulate ammonia, a toxic substance but very good at exchanging heat given off by our electical systems. It works like a car radiator or a refrigerator, but uses heat radiation instead of convection to keep cool. In space, sunlight warms very quickly, but the shade is very cold: varying from -100°C to +100°C. The goal is to keep the solar panels in the sun and the ammonia radiators in the shade. We have the temperature set at a constant 23°C – except when certain people are on board and complain about how cold it is… it has been raised to 25°C before, true story!

 

If you know that the Space Station always flies from west to east you can roughly know which way the camera was pointing in each timelapse... in this case: south!

 

Le système de refroidissement de la Station s’invite dans ce timelapse au-dessus d’une mer de nuages. Il maintient la température aux alentours des 23°C - on monte à 25°C quand l'ISS accueille des astro0nautes italiens qui se plaignent du froid...! On y fait circuler de l’ammoniaque, très toxique mais aux capacités calorifiques élevées, et ils permettent, exposés au vide de l’espace, de dissiper la chaleur accumulée par les systèmes électriques, à l’intérieur de la Station. Comme un radiateur de voiture, ou l’arrière d’un frigo où du fréon circule, mais avec un principe d’échange de chaleur différent (par radiation, et non par conduction ou convection). À noter que dans l’espace, dès qu’on est au soleil il fait très chaud, et dès qu’on est à l’ombre il fait très froid : de +100 à -100 °C environ. Le principe est donc de maintenir les panneaux solaires le plus possible au soleil, et les radiateurs le plus possible à l’ombre…

First Timelapse steps :)

A moderate auroral display in North East Scotland captured on Sunday 27th of February on arrival of a small CME. We were not expecting to see anything and had been content to photograph the stars as the sky was amazingly clear however it appeared about 11pm and the display was visible until the clouds came over around midnight.

The Kp was only 1 (rising to 4 through the night) and no aurorawatch (UK) alerts were triggered.

 

This is a remake of the previous timelapse. When I got in from shooting my hard drive died when copying over the files. I created the original film on my back up windows but photoshop was set to adobe RGB colour space. I have converted to sRGB and increased the exposure slightly on all files to make things a bit clearer.

 

It is also worth mentioning that the aurora wasn't clearly visible to the naked eye. The intensity wasn't sufficient enough to detect much in the way of colour with only a mild green tinge. A weak aurora will not always trigger the cone receptors at the back of the eye (which are responsible for detecting colour) as they are less sensitive than the rods (which detect B+W) .

This is my poor mans attempt to turn long exposures of some small rapids on a flowing stream into a move that seems flow. I guess the basics are there. Just need better source material. Sounds like another trip Rickett's Glen is in order.

Kathy and I drove out to the City of Chino car show this morning. She initially said she wasn't going to go since it was going to rain. It ended up raining but later in the day. The clouds were very impressive so after taking just a few photos (too many cars with their hoods up) I shot this short timelapse video.

In retrospect I should have shot more frequently, about every 2 seconds, as it is i had to stretch the playback rate which accounts for some of the jitter in the clouds, as the computer tried to fill in the missing frames. In future I will shoot no less than 450 frames in every timelapse, that gives me a solid 15 seconds of 30fps playback, 900 frames would be better.

Last month I began experimenting with time lapse photography after seeing Simon Christen's Unseen Sea.

 

This is the Oakland Bay Bridge, taken in September. I made a lot of mistakes that night, and learned a lot of interesting things. Among them, don't get lazy and take one frame every ten seconds. That's not enough. A good rule of thumb is to shoot continuously. Even if it's one frame every few seconds. If it turns out you've taken too many shots, you can always delete some later in order to speed up the video playback speed.
