Detail from the oil painting, Crown Jewels II - one of 2 paintings of The Crown Jewels in a commission of 30 works painted by expressionist artist Stephen B Whatley, for Her Majesty's Tower of London in 2000.

All 30 paintings are permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass, the main entrance to the Tower, from Tower Hill Station.

The artist was given permission to spend an hour a day for a week inside The Jewel House at The Tower - prior to its opening to the public - to make numerous studies of the Crown Jewels, drawings of both details and the sensations of the dazzling gems. He was able to recount the story to HM Queen Elizabeth II at a reception at the Tower of London in 2004.

The detail shown here is of The Crown of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother ( 1900-2002); mother of the present Queen.

Expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley in 2000 painting the largest of 30 oil paintings commissioned by The Tower of London. All the original paintings are held within The Tower; while the entire series is reproduced as a permanent public exhibit throughout Tower Hill Underpass, the main walkway from Tower Hill Station to The Tower of London.

This painting is 'Butler's Wharf' directly across the River Thames from The Tower - and the artist is pictured midway through the work, exactly 15 years ago ( painted 31 May- 1 June 2000) - inspired by drawings he had made earlier from Tower Bridge, overlooking the view.

Many of the paintings in the series were painted on location in and around the Tower of London; but with the sheer scale of this oil painting ( 40 x 90in/102 x 228cm), not to mention the windy location view point of Tower Bridge, it was necessary to work within the studio.

Stephen B Whatley - whose work has been published in TIME - is noted for his contemporary architectural paintings, including works for Buckingham Palace, the BBC, Taylor Woodrow & Omnis Industries. His work is in private collections worldwide and other public collections including the London Transport Museum and Westminster Cathedral.

“Design for a manned orbiting laboratory

Does man have a military mission in space? Are there jobs that he can do more effectively and more economically than the most elaborately instrumented unmanned satellite – or that he alone can do? Lockheed believes there are.

But while some of these missions can be simulated on the ground, others must actually be demonstrated in space.

During the past seven years, Lockheed Missiles & Space Company has worked steadily toward the goal of a practical earth-orbiting laboratory for this purpose. Practical because it would carry all the men, instruments, and supplies required for extended experiments in space. Practical because – in keeping with government policy – it would utilize an existing launch vehicle and return capsule.

The design shown above – one of the more recent evolutions of Lockheed’s concept for such a manned earth-orbiting laboratory – would be boosted into orbit by the Titan III-C and carry a Gemini capsule for return to earth.

Lockheed’s competence in the design and building of reliable spacecraft was established by the Agena, world’s only standard production-line space vehicle, which is now used in major military and civilian programs. Today Lockheed’s Man-in-Space organization is also making important contributions in bioastronautics, nuclear-powered space flight, and interplanetary vehicles.”

So, this being an "eye in the sky", I'm assuming the aft radial/peripheral apertures of the spacecraft, along with the large 'telescope-like' shaft extending from the aft, are to all facilitate observation/photography. The shape of the pod-like object within the aft base possibly a return capsule, if/as/when needed to return exposed film? I also assume the two - what look to be pivoting mirrors - permit observation/photography from the aforementioned peripheral/radial windows/viewports? Or are they also camera assemblies?

~8" x 11". The “brushed-nickel” sheen & shading of the metal surfaces has a Ludwik Źiemba look & feel to me. Actually, so does the earth, especially the land masses. How cool would that be? The time period and being Lockheed-produced would support such also.

I’m calling it - it’s The Maestro. Or maybe even one of his protégés, Anthony Saporito or William Collopy.

Working your way through a stack of magazines with bad news is much more palatable if you can do it in your swimming trunks while sunbathing on a sunny beach...

Young lovers stop to gaze at the history of the Tower of London in vivid colour: since 2001, the Tower Hill Underpass in the City of London has been ablaze with vibrant modern art by expressionist artist Stephen B Whatley.

The Walkway is the main entrance portal leading to Her Majesty's Tower of London. Virtually impossible to photograph in its entirety, the spacious permanent public art exhibit , photographed here, winds its way from Tower Hill Station, to join pathways leading to both the Tower and Tower Bridge.

Stephen B Whatley was commissioned in 2000 to create the series of 30 paintings ( all oil on canvas; ranging from 30 x 40in to 40 x 90in in size) most of which were painted on location, in and around The Tower. A momentous feat the paintings - depicting the history and sites - were complete within 8 months.

The artist has a history of public art commissions, including paintings to promote Buckingham Palace & the BBC.

The original works of art are held within The Tower and in 2001 the entire series of 30 paintings were reproduced as a permanent public London exhibit , on steel vitreous enamel panels that line the walkway above.

In 2004, following the completion of further refurbishments around The Tower, Stephen B Whatley was amongst the designers and architects presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, at a reception in The Banqueting Hall, within the walls of The Tower; at which all 30 original paintings were on show.

Whatley's work, which has been published in TIME magazine is in private collections worldwide; in public collections including BBC Heritage, The Royal Collection, London Transport Museum & Westminster Cathedral.

For the millions who visit the Tower of London every year, from all over the world, these contemporary paintings that brightly capture the spirit of Royal history, are the first introduction to London's top tourist attraction; through this unique public art gallery.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy the 35th president of the United States.

Oh Taylor, oh Taylor, so sweet and so fine

Your voice like a melody, your words like a vine

But when it comes to Donny, you say he's not your type

A shame, for his charm and wit would make him quite prime

He struts and he preens, with a smile so wide

His eyes sparkle bright, like diamonds in the night

But alas, you see past all that glamour and grace

And instead, you choose to chase after someone else's face

Oh Taylor, oh Taylor, why do you resist?

For Donny's love is true, and his heart is pure and kind

But I suppose, you have your reasons, your own design

And so, I'll just sit here, and sing this ballad of mine

The light catches the surface of this oil painting of Barack Obama, by artist Stephen B Whatley, pictured with his work (in London, UK - December 2008).......just as the brightest of light will shine on Barack Obama today as he is sworn in as 44th President of The United States of America in Washington,DC.

" I pray that as he historically takes office, Barack Obama will bring further hope to the USA and the world; that he will be given the chance to bring his visionary hopes of restoration of posterity and peaceful unity between all peoples- irrespective of race, religion, disability, sexual orientation...any prejudice against innocent minority groups - to a bright and enduring fruition. Peace...not war; love...not hate...God bless the new President of the USA"

A recent photograph of the Tower Hill Underpass, recently renamed the Tower Hill Subway - the main entrance portal, leading from Tower Hill Station to the Tower of London - decorated since 2001 with giant reproductions of the work of British artist Stephen B Whatley (1965-).

The expressionist painter was commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces in December 1999 to undertake the creation of a series of 30 oil paintings detailing the history and iconic symbols of the historic fortress; London's top tourist attraction; ultimately to vibrantly transform the previously dark walkway for decades to come.

Many of the 30 works - created between January and August 2000 - were painted on location around and even within the walls of the Tower of London. The original oil paintings which hang within the Tower range in size from 40 x 30in and 60 x 90in; and shown here, from left are:

'Queen's Guardsman' ; Crown Jewels (1) - one of two paintings of the Crown Jewels, inspired by studies made directly from the priceless jewels, on location in the Jewel House; Panoramic View of The Tower - painted on location from the then BBC studio, used to film river events; and The Interior of The Chapel Royal of St Peter Ad Vincular - inspired by charcoal drawings made on location in the chapel, within the grounds of the Tower.

Stephen B Whatley then regularly oversaw the delicate process of reproducing the vibrance of his paintings onto steel vitreous enamel panels, at Escol Panels in Wellingborough; which was reported as an Apple Colorsync Success story; achieved by the expertise of Typemaker Ltd.

In March 2001 the installation of the panels was unveiled; and a private viewing of the original paintings was given at the Vaults, in the Tower; in celebration.

In June 2004, Stephen B Whatley was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II & HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, in recognition of his major series of work, at a reception in the Banqueting Hall of the Tower of London - where the original paintings were exhibited - to celebrate 4 years of completion of refurbishment of the Tower & its environs.

The work of Stephen B Whatley is in collections worldwide; & in public collections including the London Transport Museum, the BBC & the Royal Collection of HM Queen Elizabeth II. His press includes The London Times, The Guardian, the New York Times & TIME.

Expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley photographed yesterday beneath his paintings The Sacred Heart of Jesus (2010) and Saint James (2013) - two of 19 oil paintings currently on show in his exhibition 'Paintings From Prayer' amidst the grandeur of The Rectory, St James's Church, Spanish Place, London W1, until May 19th.

Visitors to the exhibition have been expressing the deep feeling and 'light' they receive from the original works that include tributes to Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints including St Anthony, St Clare of Assisi & St Kateri Tekakwitha - painted on her day of canonisation last year. Painting on special anniversaries is one of the statements the artist often feels compelled to make.

Stephen B Whatley was born in London in 1965 and paints a wide range of subjects including cityscapes, landscapes, architecture & still life. He is also a portrait painter & his many sitters include stars of stage and screen including actors Dame Judi Dench, Susan Hampshire, Julie Walters, Barbara Windsor & Sian Phillips & TV presenter Sarah Greene. His work is in collections worldwide & public collections including the BBC Heritage, the London Transport Museum, the Royal Collection of Queen Elizabeth II & The Carrollton School of The Sacred Heart, Miami; and has been published in numerous press features including the London Times, the New York Times, Hello! magazine & TIME.

Whatley's work is probably most known from his commissioned paintings of Buckingham Palace, featured on advertisements on the London Underground in 1999 & 2000; and his commission of 30 vibrant paintings for the Tower of London which since 2001 are permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass that leads to the Tower of London, from Tower Hill Station.
