President Barack Obama in a portrait tribute, painted days before the 2008 US Election by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.
The photograph taken in the artist's London studio shows the montage of selected photographs that inspired the oil painting - including the TIME magazine cover of 2006. Coincidentally this painting would be published in the TIME magazine Person of The Year issue of Dec 2008-Jan 2009.
The original work of art is owned by an American property developer living in London, UK; but signed prints of the portrait can be ordered from the artist's website.
Last night, January 10, 2017, in Chicago, President Obama delivered a brilliant farewell speech to the nation, which the artist watched live on the BBC from London UK.
He stated that America was in a better place than 'when we started' - and reassured the US 'citizens' ('the office we all share'), maybe with a veiled reference to the impending change of Presidency, that 'change can only happen when ordinary people come together'; that 'democracy can buckle if we give into fear' and emphasised the need for 'solidarity' - that 'we are all in this together'. His last words: "God bless The United States of America"

A new tribute painting celebrating the Centenary of British Airways painted by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.
HM Queen Elizabeth II visited BA's headquarters close to Heathrow Airport on May 23, 2019 to commemorate the anniversary; having made many overseas flights during her reign aboard BOAC and BA aircraft.
Whatley has had a passion for watching planes since childhood, long before he ever flew. In the 1970s he enjoyed watching planes with his Aunt and Uncle who lived during that decade close to three airfields; first Biggin Hill in Kent, UK and then the USAF bases of Mildenhall and Lakenheath in Suffolk, UK.
The painter researched the history and sought passionately to capture the magnificence, power and speed of air travel.
In his distinctive vibrant colours and with dynamic brushstrokes, the artists captures the powerful essence of a contemporary twin engine jet, the Airbus A320 ; and retracing the history of BA, a BOAC Handley Page Hermes IV airliner from 1949 and a Vickers Vimy passenger craft from 1919 - the year when it was used to make the first direct flight across the North Atlantic.
The artist, whose work has been published in TIME, has a history of painting tributes in significant anniversary years.
Stephen B. Whatley has undertaken major commissions for the BBC, Buckingham Palace for the Royal Collection all painted on location ; and his series of 30 works commissioned in 2000 by the Tower of London are all permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass, at Tower Hill Station, London.
In 2004 the artist was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in recognition of his work.

A Permanent exhibit of modern art greets visitors to the historic Tower of London, just outside Tower Hill Station : since 2001, the Tower Hill Underpass in the City of London has been ablaze with vibrant expressionist paintings by artist Stephen B. Whatley.
Stephen B Whatley was commissioned in 1999 to create the series of 30 paintings ( all oil on canvas; ranging from 30 x 40in to 40 x 90in in size) most of which were painted on location, in and around The Tower. A momentous feat the paintings - depicting the history and sites - were complete within the first 8 months of 2000.
The artist has a history of public art commissions, including paintings commissioned to promote Buckingham Palace & the BBC.
The original works of art are held within The Tower and in 2001 the entire series of 30 paintings were reproduced as a permanent public London exhibit , on steel vitreous enamel panels that line the walkway above.
In 2004, following the completion of further refurbishments around The Tower, Stephen B Whatley was amongst the designers and architects presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, at a reception in The Banqueting Hall, within the walls of The Tower; at which all 30 original paintings were on show.
Whatley's work, which has been published in TIME magazine is in private collections worldwide; in public collections including BBC Heritage, The Royal Collection, London Transport Museum Newman University & Westminster Cathedral.
A spontaneous cartoon tribute to the President & First Lady of the United States: Barack & Michelle Obama.
While artist Stephen B Whatley is primarily a passionate painter of Expressionist oils, since his childhood he has also enjoyed the art of cartoons.
Often his cartoon tributes are finely detailed ( as you can see in his 'Cartoon Tributes Set' ) but every so often in his capacity as a professional artist - alongside his Fine Art commissions & exhibitions, he is called upon to entertain guests at corporate & party events & weddings - at which through this broad and fluid style, he transforms his sitters into cartoon stars.
Unlike traditional 'caricatures', Stephen's cartoon portraits are always affectionate, rather than mocking - truly bringing joy and happiness to those he draws.
Stephen B Whatley's tribute in oils of the 44th President of the United States was published in the American news magazine,TIME, in December 2008. Please click the link to see the painting: www.flickr.com/photos/stephenbwhatley/2994411873/

Painted in a single sitting from life, in London, this portrait is of the artist's dear friend, who celebrates his birthday on this day, October 12th. Today, there is a permanent public show of Stephen B Whatley's art - his series of 30 paintings , commissioned by the Tower of London, reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass, just outside Tower Hill Station & leading to the Tower. Tips and Tricks for Rural Black and White Winter Photography:
1. **Leverage Contrast**:
In winter, the interplay between the bright snow and dark elements (like trees or structures) creates natural contrast. Focus on enhancing this to make your subject stand out. A windmill against the snow, as in this image, becomes a perfect focal point.
2. **Pay Attention to Texture**:
Snow and bare trees have unique textures that can add depth to a black-and-white photograph. Use subtle lighting to emphasize these textures without washing them out.
3. **Simplify the Composition**:
Winter landscapes naturally lend themselves to minimalism. Isolate your subject in a vast snowy scene to evoke feelings of solitude and timelessness.
4. **Adjust for Snow's Brightness**:
Snow can trick your camera's meter into underexposing. Compensate by slightly increasing exposure to avoid losing details in the whites.
5. **Look for Patterns and Lines**:
Rural settings often feature fences, roads, or treelines that can act as leading lines, drawing the viewer’s eye into the composition and creating a sense of depth.

2020 was the year of the covid 19 pandemic, travel and family gathering restrictions. Constant fear mongering by politicians, mandated masks, incessant messages of threats against workers. For many like me not able to see their children and grandchildren due to government restrictions and fear, which officials enact and disobey, it’s been a very lonely year as my family is 650 miles away.

A serene lighthouse standing tall under the moonlit sky.
Fact Paragraph: Lighthouses, often called “guardians of the coast,” have been guiding sailors safely to shore for centuries. The earliest known lighthouse, the Pharos of Alexandria, was built in ancient Egypt around 280 BCE and stood over 330 feet tall. Modern lighthouses use Fresnel lenses, which revolutionized maritime navigation by focusing light into powerful beams visible for miles. Today, while many have been automated or retired, lighthouses remain iconic symbols of safety and resilience, often doubling as historic landmarks and sources of artistic inspiration.
Congratulations President Barack Obama!
This is your day. Please help our nation invest in what matters in the world: people, our economy and jobs, and the natural environment, and put an end to Washington's "Gumball Machine Politics."

Reading Time Magazine Vol. XLIV No. 6, from August 7 1944. This photo was likely taken in 1944 or later. The film it was shot on is Kodak Plus-X which has a code indicating the manufacture date of 1943. I believe these were shot at Adak Army Airfield which later became Naval Air Facility Adak on Adak Island, Alaska.
Painted on 4th July, a tribute to the classic Warner Bros. animated cartoon star, Bugs Bunny, by expressionist artist Stephen B Whatley.
Whatley has a great affection for the USA - & cartoons - and often chooses to paint on significant anniversaries. His work has been published in TIME and visitors to London can see a permanent public walkway of his 30 paintings commissioned by the Tower of London, outside Tower Hill Station, London.
Familiar to generations through his antics in the Looney Toons cartoons, Bugs Bunny first came to prominence in the Academy-award nominated cartoon Tex Avery -directed cartoon A Wild Hare (1940). The Oscar would eventually be awarded to his cartoon, Knighty Knight Bugs (1958) (featuring Yosemite Sam).
Bugs Bunny, originally voiced by Mel Blanc, has gone through a variety of stylizations - and the artist worked a from a variety of images to capture the essence of his character; particularly focusing on his 1950s look.
Some interesting facts about the fame of Bugs Bunny:
Every year from 1945 to 1961, he was voted "top animated character" by movie theatre owners. In 1976 when Americans were polled about their favourite character, real or imaginary , Bugs Bunny came in second - behind Abraham Lincoln; and in 1997 he was the first cartoon star to appear on a US postage stamp.

Painting the bond of love....a new portrait , inspired by photographs sent to the expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley by an American couple, Jerry and Janet, who have been great collectors of the artist's work; in particular his Catholic tribute paintings.
As they are devout Catholics, the painting was started on the Feast of The Most Holy Trinity and completed throughout The Feasts of The Sacred Heart of Jesus and The Immaculate Heart of Mary; during which the little heart emerged between them.
The original painting recently arrived on the East coast of the USA and the collectors emailed a happy photograph of the two of them holding the painting.
Their accompanying message to the artist : " The portrait has arrived. It brightened our day immensely! The original version is so vibrant, full of depth and energy. Thanks for sharing your artistic and spiritual gifts to capture our essence in this portrait tribute. We look forward to sharing it with our children over time as they come to visit..."
Whatley's portraits of The Prince of Wales and Princes William & Harry - commissioned by American collectors - were published in HELLO magazine in 2008 and 2011; his portrait of Princess Margaret (Private collection, USA) was published in The Times(London) and HELLO; whilst his portrait of Barack Obama was published in TIME magazine's Person of The Year issue of 2008.
Stephen B. Whatley also has a history of painting portraits from life in a single sitting and his many portrait sitters in the past 30 years include actors of stage and screen such as Frances Barber, Elizabeth Dawn MBE, Dame Judi Dench, Susan Hampshire OBE, Dame Siân Phillips CBE, Alison Steadman OBE, Dame Julie Walters, Barbara Young, Carol Royle, Virginia McKenna OBE, , Finty Williams & Dame Barbara Windsor; TV presenter Sarah Greene; comedienne & writer Jo Brand; Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year, Patsy Bloom; entrepreneur, Ivan Massow; fashion designer, Matthew Williamson; and barrister, Michael Mansfield QC.
In 2000 Whatley was commissioned to paint a series of 30 paintings for the Tower of London - all of which are permanently reproduced outside Tower Hill Station, throughout Tower Hill Underpass, as a permanent vibrant art exhibit welcoming visitors to the Tower of London.
In 2004 Stephen B. Whatley was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh at a reception at the Tower of London, in recognition of his work.
