Our Maker Art class created a Time Machine this year, inviting you to travel through time from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century.
Our 4th and 5th graders at the Lycée Français designed their own scenes from the past, present or future, and brought them to life with motion, lights and sounds. They also worked in teams to build interactive features like illuminated keypads, spinners and doors, using the popular Arduino platform.
In our after-school classes, we combine art, technology and storytelling to help children create their own magical worlds. They learn to design their ideas, build them with a variety of tools, animate them with electronics and tell their stories. This unique multimedia course helps them develop their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills -- and builds their confidence that they can help change the world.
This year, we had a really good group of 9 students, ages 8 to 11 -- many of whom had taken our Maker Art classes before. They were very creative and engaged, and did a great job presenting their work at the Lycée Français -- and at Marinovators at the College of Marin on April 22.

We are creating a ‘Pataphysical Time Machine that invites you to travel through time and meet characters from the past, present and future. We engage our guests in a fun interactive experience that combines art, multimedia, theater and technology. When completed, our Time Machine will take you on wild rides across time, from the Big Bang to Trumpocalypse and beyond. Vive la machine à explorer le temps!

Our friends Geo Monley and Brandon Onstott are making a porthole for the Time Machine we’re creating at Pataphysical Studios, with a world-class team of of artists, makers, engineers and multimedia innovators. This interactive art exhibit will invite you to travel through time and meet characters from the past, present and future.
Geo and Brandon are building this porthole at Tam Makers, our community makerspace, where they can use a wider range of tools, from Autocad 360 to laser cutter or CNC rounter. The design is similar to the iris used in cameras, which let you open and close a circular very elegantly.
Our guests will be invited to open these portholes as part of their time travel experience, to interact with characters and articfacts from different times.
It’s great to see different teams come together to design and build the various parts of our Time Machine. That’s what collective art projects are all about!

The year is 1996. Or is it 1997? And Brigitte and I make a short movie for our creative writing class. Title: THE UNWASHED MASSES. Tagline: We are obscure references to ourselves.
It's the gripping story of a clown's quest for revenge against the president who sent him to war, his descent into madness, and his eventual smiting by God herself. It also includes Emily Dickinson, the crucifixion of a sock monkey, an homage to the "Losing My Religion" video, and three minutes of flag-burning.
The movie is nine minutes long.
And our teacher LOVED IT.
Of course, this was the teacher who would confess to me (later that semester, I think) that she regretted passing up the opportunity to teach at a nearby college. "I mean, I love highschoolers. It's a great age. But...don't make the mistake that I did. Don't become a high school English teacher." She (and my English teacher senior year) always seemed so genuinely concerned for my future and so insistent that I become a writer; it was probably precisely the kind of thing that I needed to hear, but it certainly made for some awkward moments with these sweet but profoundly frustrated adults.

Our Maker Art class created a Time Machine this year, inviting you to travel through time from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century.
Our 4th and 5th graders at the Lycée Français designed their own scenes from the past, present or future, and brought them to life with motion, lights and sounds. They also worked in teams to build interactive features like illuminated keypads, spinners and doors, using the popular Arduino platform.
In our after-school classes, we combine art, technology and storytelling to help children create their own magical worlds. They learn to design their ideas, build them with a variety of tools, animate them with electronics and tell their stories. This unique multimedia course helps them develop their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills -- and builds their confidence that they can help change the world.
This year, we had a really good group of 9 students, ages 8 to 11 -- many of whom had taken our Maker Art classes before. They were very creative and engaged, and did a great job presenting their work at the Lycée Français -- and at Marinovators at the College of Marin on April 22.
This Maker Art class was taught by Fabrice Florin and Edward Janne at the Lycée Français in Sausalito in winter 2017. We met every week for 12 workshops of 90 minutes each, Thursdays at 3:30pm, from January 5 to March 30, 2017. Our teachers are part of the Tam Makers learning community and we prepared materials for this project in our state-of-the-art makerspace at the nearby Tam High School.
