It's nearing 11/11/11:00 on the West Coast and like most I am thinking of my gratitude to people who put their bodies on the line to serve their countries but I think we have screwed up badly by focusing on the heroism of the past.
The greatest honour we can do for veterans, dead and alive, is to avoid future conflict that puts more lives at risk. Millions of civilians have been killed and maimed in recent conflicts that they did not sign up for and received no training for (unlike military personnel). Too many of us are regularly supporting more wars because we vote for the fear-mongers, we want a higher standard of living, we want everything new and fast, we retreat to our echo chambers, etc.
There is a great genocide beginning that will be bigger than all those of the 20th century put together. People will blame it on religion and race but the true cause will be greed and willful blindness acting through climate change and inequality.

I won't say I've never eaten a donut (or worse) for breakfast but it shouldn't be presented as a standard practice.

One of the quandaries of climate action. We need more non-fossil non-nuclear power but there are real environmental impacts from building hydro dams the flood large areas. The dangers of unintended consequences. Which points out ince again that we really must simply learn to live within our means and stop having unrealistic expectations.
