One of the things that makes tar sands so dirty is that enormous amounts of energy are required to heat the water needed to extract the bitumen then more energy is needed to crack the bitumen into usable products. The water is so polluted that it has to sit in settling ponds for years.

My sister's cat likes to rest in the sink on top of the toilet sometimes because it's cooler in the summer heat. I love this style of toilet because it saves a lot of water. There is a spigot (coming out of Sam's tummy) which provides the water for handwashing and that drains into the toilet tank for the next flush. Greywater recycling, YAY! (By that I mean that the greywater from handwashing is recycled into helping fill the tank for the next flush.)

My commentary:

What a load of bullshit! They want to produce at least a 100,000,000 bottles worth of plastic waste as well as consume a couple million litres of oil for transportation while polluting at least 100,000,000 litres of water in order to make far more than $10,000,000 worth of profits for themselves in order to do some good in the world? *&^%%&^$$%#$%^ WTF!

If you want to help children get clean water then make a direct donation to a reputable aid agency.

If you bought one bottle of Ethos every week you would spend about $75/ year in order to make a $5 donation. Next time you receive a request for a donation to clean water charities, give them a $25 donation and save yourself $50 by avoiding the environmental disaster that is bottled water. Win-Win.

It is immoral to buy this in most of the developed world (except a for limited emergency supply).

Strong words, you say? It's the truth.

First, habitual consumption of bottled water is immoral in places where safe tap water is available (like Victoria BC and most of North America.) Water is a human right and we shouldn't be encouraging privatization of it.

The amount of oil and plastic wasted in distributing it is horrendous. It gets trucked from distant locations to the point of sale. Shoppers claim they couldn't possibly carry such a heavy bulky item on a bicycle so they 'have to' shop by car. Beaches around the world are littered with bottles thrown away by people who won't bother to recycle. Recycling also uses substantial (usually fossil) energy.

Second, Nestle has been under boycott for decades because it pushes infant formula in poor countries resulting in disease and death when mixed with local contaminated water instead of babies getting clean breast milk.

Beside the colossal Syncrude tailings pond. There were a lot of hired buses which presumably were for transporting workers but they were almost completely empty. I hope they just hadn't made their main stop for passengers. The masses of gas-guzzling trucks on the road usually only contained a driver with no passengers.

Ask Premier Redford and Resource Minister Oliver to attend the Healing Walk 2013 in the Tar Sands.

My sister (who lives in Japan) just told me that she was recently shocked to learn that most of the bottle and can bins don't collect for recycling but simply to keep non-burnables out of the burnable trash. I hope she misunderstood.

The upshot is that just because you try to do the right thing doesn't always mean the right thing happens.

I photographed the hourglass in my homemade lightbox with the flash at 1/2 power and used a gold reflector to get some gold color into the glass. I added 3 different textures that I got on a group for textures on Flickr, but can't remember who in particular they belonged to. I will try to search them out to give them credit tonight.

While doing a build with Habitat for Humanity in the Philippines, we were told it was best to avoid drinking local tap water to avoid disease/pollution but it really saddened me to see the amount of plastic waste. That's why I am so angry about North Americans with clean safe water who cause so much pollution and waste by drinking trendy bottled water when they actually have clean local water. Here in the

Philippines some bottles got recycled as scoops for pouring cement. I don't know what happened to the rest. Burned? Recycled? Landfill? Litter?
