It was hard to say goodbye to this sweet little guy, but he will grow and thrive and one day get to play with all the other chickadees in the trees. We both shedded some tears.
Prickly pear (genus Opuntia) catches the morning sun from an Albuquerque front garden. I wish all my cactus was that healthy.

Fitting Ripped Denim Jeans with a tailored, urban approach.
Bells twinpod, Physaria bellii, thrives on Niobrara and Pierre shale outcrops between Fort Collins and the Ken-Caryl Ranch Natural Area in Denver, a distance of about 60 miles. On a map, the geographic distribution is approximately 20 tiny dots at the base of the Front Range, the edge of the Great Plains. This species thrives on soils so toxic that it has virtually no competitors. On the other hand, it does not seem able to spread to normal soils. In an evolutionary sense, this species is in a precarious position--if the shales disappear, the plant would be extinct.
Each April I visit this population to marvel and to take a photo of these healthy flowers in their toxic habitat.

I was told by an Illinois bug group that Tropical Milkweed isn't native to the Midwest, and thus couldn't be used in their campaign to save the Monarchs. Perhaps it isn't native -- I'll bet a lot of garden flowers are not -- but it can be found in gardens all over Iowa. It thrives in the Midwest, even if the purity patrol turns up a haughty nose at it.

I bought 5 random varieties of Hellebores last summer/autumn with no idea of what was included. They are still establishing themselves around the Bay tree in the north facing front garden and I wasn't expecting much (anything) this winter but this one has chucked out an absolute stunner of a flower and I really hope it thrives in future years.
It's a similar shot to one I took in January of a different variety next to this but I couldn't resist sharing this beauty.

Boston is a market town and small port on the east coast of England.
During the medieval period Boston was one of the most prosperous ports in England and had a thriving trade with continental Europe, the wool trade through the port brought with it wealth and Boston to this day still had some fine buildings including the parish church of St Botolph, one of the the largest parish church in England, with one of the tallest towers in England visible for miles around from the flat lands of Lincolnshire.
The town received its charter from Henry VIII in 1545 and Boston had two Members of Parliament from 1552.
In 1612 John Cotton became the Vicar of St Botolph's and, although viewed askance by the Church of England for his non-conformist preaching, became responsible for a large increase in Church attendance. He encouraged those who disliked the lack of religious freedom in England to join the Massachusetts Bay Company, and later helped to found the city of Boston, Massachusetts which he was instrumental in naming.

I'm going to go out on a 'limb' and say the winds affecting the shape and foliage of this tree were coming out of the west.
I know I will never stop being amazed by trees in general, and by what they can endure in different environments. There's so much to learn about how they adapt and thrive despite brutal conditions at times.
Two new (to me) talents of trees are 'adaptive growth' and 'reaction wood'. The former refers to that fact that trees will form more structural root mass on the leeward side which is exposed to strong and persistent prevailing winds. Looking at this photo, I think you can guess which side is leeward.
The latter term 'reaction wood' is a process by which trees that are tilted by strong winds will start to produce modified cells. These cells have different levels of cellulose and/or lignin, which helps to compensate and strengthen the tree. In fact, trees that are grown indoors where there is no wind end up much weaker and don't live as long. Even the common practice of staking new trees can put their long term prospects at risk.
Looking at this weathered tree along the Southern Oregon Coast, I thought of it as a battered warrior. Perhaps even struggling to live. In reality, this beautiful tree is likely stronger than most and full of character because of what it's had to endure. I feel like there's a lesson to be learned here....

This 1925 photograph - here processed and partially coloured by me - of the merchant Ymär Abdrahim (1888 - 1975) and his family was shot by Eric Sundström. Abdrahim, who had moved to Helsinki in 1898 from the Nizny Novgorod area in order to assist his uncle, who had a stall in the market, founded a thriving fabric shop in 1911. The original photograph is in the Helsinki city museum collection (N32450).

The City of Opa-Locka was the vision of aviation pioneer, Glen Curtiss. Opa-Locka is an urban community occupying 4.2 square miles in the North-Western area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city boundaries are as follows: on the North-NW 151st Street, on the South - N.W. 125th Street, on the East – NW 45th Avenue on the West. On May 14, 1926, Opa-Locka was chartered as a town by twenty-eight registered voters.
The area was originally named by the Native Americans “Opa-tisha-wocka-locka” meaning “a big island covered with many trees and swamps” but the name was quickly shortened to Opa-Locka. The City was developed based on the Arabian Nights theme which is evident by the large collection of Moorish architecture throughout the city and with street names like Sabur, Sultan, Ali Baba, Sharazad, Aladdin, and Sesame. Mr. Curtiss and architect, Bernhardt Muller, built 105 buildings with an array of domes, minarets, and outside staircases. By the time Mr. Curtiss completed his vision for Opa-Locka he had built a self-contained city with a hotel, zoo park, golf course, archery club, swimming pool, airport, and train station.
The September 1926 hurricane badly damaged the City, destroying many of the structures, but the surviving Moorish-style buildings continue to give Opa-Locka its unique appearance. Opa-Locka currently has twenty buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The U.S. Navy opened a base at the Opa-Locka Airport shortly after the hurricane which allowed the City to thrive after the hurricane but the base closed in the 1950s. The City experienced a decline and was labeled a "struggling community" in South Florida. Despite the challenges, the City has regained the spirit it was founded in 1926. Under the direction of Mayor Myra L. Taylor, city officials have vowed to turn the city around by focusing on crime prevention, cleaning up the city, and maintaining financial stability. This drive has generated an increased sense of community, pride among Opa-Locka residents, and a major drop in crime. In keeping with that vow and to advance community pride, the city became the first community in the United States to commemorate the first African-American President of the United States by renaming a mile-long section of Perviz Avenue from Oriental Boulevard to Ali-Baba Avenue, Barack Obama Avenue on February 17, 2009.
In addition to the unique buildings, Opa-Locka has a large general aviation airport, three parks, two lakes, and a railroad station which is currently the tri-rail station. The City is comprised of a mixture of residential, commercial, and industrial zones. Despite its limited resources, the City was the backdrop for the making of movies such as Texas Justice, Bad Boyz II, and 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Corregidor is an island in the entrance of the Philippines' Manila Bay. It was a thriving American community before the war. Its residents enjoyed creature comforts such as movies, automobiles, baseball games, an electric train system, and a swimming pool. Due to its position in the bay, it has served as a focal point for the naval defenses of the capital city of Manila. During World War II, Corregidor was the site of several battles and its fall to the Japanese forces was instrumental in the subsequent capture of the Philippines and the retreat of the United States in the early stages of the war. Currently, it is an important historic and tourist site and is managed under the jurisdiction of Cavite City.

(Behind-the-scene: I went to the historic island of Corregidor with friends for a model shoot. We picked the ruins of the Topside Barracks for our location. While on a break I ventured about and saw this lone red hibiscus (locally known as "Gumamela"). Immediately, the red color reminded me of how sacred this place is, how many lives were sacrificed during WWII, where thousand of soldiers - Filipinos, Americans, and Japanese fought an utterly bloody battle in this forsaken rock-barren arena of war. All that is left of the island now are ruins, empty shells of once formidable structures and weapons of destruction bearing defiance to anyone who threatened freedom of Philippine soil. There is something that feels different in this island. Something deep that yearns to be understood and meditated upon. You have to visit it to get a drift of my ramblings.)

Looking down from the cliffs at macrocystis alga, giant kelp, thriving in summer sun. Soon, winter storms will ravage the stands, and the cycle will begin again.
Big Sur
This is my 3rd sighting of her over 2 years. She is still hanging out in the same spot and thriving. She is not native to Texas, probably a released or escaped pet. I managed to get one close shot before she plopped into the water.

While it's the close-ups that I usually wait for, there's something about catching a white shark at a distance that gives a sense of how vast the underwater world is.
The shark in this photo is Luca Arnone (#136 in MCSI's Guadalupe White Shark Photo ID database). When he was first identified, he had a rope wrapped around his gill region. Thankfully, some divers were able to cut the rope free, and we continued to see Luca year after year following him being freed from that entanglement.
With Guadalupe now closed to diving and tourism, I can only hope that Luca is still out there and thriving.
