Maybe this image I saw on New Years Day 2020 was a foretelling of the year to come. On a blustery cold morning, in an inhospitable environment, isolated from all other forms of life and exposed to the elements of freezing temperatures, snow and howling winds, this lone juniper not only survives, it thrives.

With no eyes to appreciate its view of the West Temple, nor grow fearful over its precarious perch 1000' over the tunnel entry below, this lone tree grows tenaciously reaching toward the heavens, even though that exposes it to the dangers even more.

Isn't that what life is really all about?

Old windows, old doors of Hudson, NY

Formerly Claverack Landing, Hudson was once a hub for the whaling industry — and it very nearly became New York’s capital city.

Of all the many cities and towns in our region, only one was named after Henry Hudson, the Valley’s first European visitor. How the designation came to be is, well, a whale of a tale.

Until 1784, the city of Hudson was known as Claverack Landing. It was a farming community of 10 or so families—around 150 people. But that was about to change.

In the years during and right after the Revolutionary War, the Royal Navy clamped down on American whaling— one of the biggest industries of the 18th century (especially in New England). In 1783, brothers Seth and Thomas Jenkins from Nantucket set sail for a new beginning. They found a home base in this unlikely locale—100 miles from the ocean— on a deep and safe harbor with plenty of land. Claverack Landing presented an opportunity to build a company town from scratch… which they did.

The Jenkins brothers and 28 other whalers, who became known as the Proprietors, formed a company and bought the land from Dutch families (who had previously purchased it from the native Mohicans). They laid out a city grid and put into place everything a whaling enterprise would need: ship builders, rope and sail makers, coopers, and more than a few saloons. Within three years, the city had several wharves, four warehouses, plus “a covered rope-walk, spermaceti-works, one hundred and fifty dwelling-houses, shops, barns, one of the best distilleries in America, and fifteen hundred souls,” according to the New York Journal.

On November 14, 1784, Claverack Landing became the first city to be incorporated in the brand-new United States of America. However, according to an 1862 chronicle, Historical Sketches of Hudson, the Proprietors wanted a new name. They unanimously agreed that “it should be called by the name of Hudson.” There is no record as to why they insisted on the name change, but according to the book, at least one person wasn’t happy: New York’s first governor George Clinton. He wanted Hudson named after himself.

In 1797, Hudson was one vote short of becoming the capital of New York State. Nevertheless, the city has survived and thrived, and today represents a true gem of the Hudson Valley.

Third instalment of the series. Fallen trees are often difficult to ignore when looking for images in woodland but getting a decent image not so easy. The conditions being what they were did help to give me something I thought worthwhile sharing this time.

These are the remains of the hamlet of Lodge overlooking Scar House Reservoir, Upper Nidderdale

The view from the ruins of the Methodist Chapel over Scar House Reservoir is a delight to see though when the chapel was functioning the view would have been over a green and fertile valley

Lodge was a small farming hamlet complete with Methodist Chapel originally founded as a monastic grange farm. Abandoned in the 1920's its historic legacy is faint but enduring.

In 1900 Lodge was a thriving community of small upland farms. It probably started life in the 13th century when a grange farm was built here. The farm and land belonged to the Cistercian Monastery of Byland Abbey. When the Abbey was dissolved in 1538 the land was sold to wealthy local landowners who over the next 350 years improved the farms and land.

Bradford Corporation, responsible for building Scar House Reservoir owned Lodge from 1904. The last residents left in 1929

At one time the droveway through Lodge was the main road connecting Scotland to Eastern England

Regno Unito, East Sussex, Brighton, Primavera 2022

For almost a century and a half the West Pier has been Britain’s most iconic pier. Renowned for its wonderful architectural style, it has been visited and enjoyed by millions. Opening in 1866 as a simple promenade pier, by the early twentieth century with the addition of a theatre and concert hall, it had become a thriving centre of seaside entertainment and enjoying its glamorous heyday. With the outbreak of the second world war, and the changed circumstances of its aftermath, the fortunes of the West Pier began to decline. As the fashion for foreign holidays took hold in the 50’s and 60’s, the neglected pier fell into disrepair. Declared unsafe it was closed to the public in 1975. It was still awaiting renovation when two fires and several storms, left really little in situ. But even today with its sculptural remains casting an eerie beauty over the seafront, the West Pier is still the most photographed building in Brighton.

Like other plants mosses make their own food through photosynthesis but they don not have flowers or seeds. Instead, they send out spores or can reproduce when one part of the moss breaks off and lands in an appropriate place for growth, such as dark damp places like the floor of a damp wooded area.

The Arecaceae are a botanical family of perennial plants. Their growth form can be climbers, shrubs, tree-like and stemless plants, all commonly known as palms. Those having a tree-like form are colloquially called palm trees. They are flowering plants, a family in the monocot order Arecales. Currently 181 genera with around 2600 species are known, most of them restricted to tropical and subtropical climates. Most palms are distinguished by their large, compound, evergreen leaves, known as fronds, arranged at the top of an unbranched stem. However, palms exhibit an enormous diversity in physical characteristics and inhabit nearly every type of habitat within their range, from rainforests to deserts.

Palms are among the best known and most extensively cultivated plant families. They have been important to humans throughout much of history. Many common products and foods are derived from palms. In contemporary times, palms are also widely used in landscaping, making them one of the most economically important plants. In many historical cultures, because of their importance as food, palms were symbols for such ideas as victory, peace, and fertility. For inhabitants of cooler climates today, palms symbolize the tropics and vacations. Most palms are native to tropical and subtropical climates. Palms thrive in moist and hot climates but can be found in a variety of different habitats. Their diversity is highest in wet, lowland forests. South America, the Caribbean, and areas of the south Pacific and southern Asia are regions of concentration. Colombia may have the highest number of palm species in one country. 36744

Ezekiel 17:9 “Say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: “Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers—so that all its sprouting shoots wither? And neither by great strength nor by many people can it be raised from its roots again.”’”

The West Rim is located on the Native American reservation, owned and operated by the Hualapai Nation. The West Rim is most famous for its natural landscape and the Skywalk (…more on that later). At the West Rim, visitors can walk right up to the rim and peer 4,000 feet down the canyon to the Colorado River. The West Rim, while not as wide as the South Rim, is still extremely impressive and the drop to the canyon floor is almost completely vertical.

Joshua Tree

Yucca brevifolia (also known as the Joshua tree, yucca palm, tree yucca, and palm tree yucca) is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names.

This monocotyledonous tree is native to the arid Southwestern United States, specifically California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, and northwestern Mexico. It is confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400 and 1,800 m (1,300 and 5,900 ft) elevation. It thrives in the open grasslands of Queen Valley and Lost Horse Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. Other regions with large populations of the tree can be found northeast of Kingman, Arizona, in Mohave County; and along U.S. 93 between the towns of Wickenburg and Wikieup, a route which has been designated the Joshua Tree Parkway of Arizona. The trees are abundant in Saddleback Butte State Park only 85 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles County's Antelope Valley.[10] The common name Joshua tree apparently comes from Christian iconography.

The Harris Hawk is a medium-large bird of prey that breeds from the southwestern United States south to Chile, central Argentina, and Brazil. Birds are sometimes reported at large in Western Europe, especially Britain, but it is a popular species in falconry and these records almost certainly all refer to escapes from captivity..This one has been at large for some time and is thriving it jesses (leather strips around its legs to hold in a glove while hunting or handling the bird ) are broken and warm so not much chance of them getting tangled thankfully. .Was lucky enough to see it land and after a 40 minute stalk with badger in tow this is 1 of quite a few shots i got

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

Today the town of Tenby is a mix of old and new with the original castle walls dating back to the time of the Norman Conquest and the town walls to the 13th century.

During the middle ages the town had a thriving fishing industry but following the English Civil war the town went into decline and by the middle of the 18th Century it was in ruins and many of the houses were abandoned.

However, during the Victorian era many of the buildings we see today were refurbished and painted in a variety of pastel colours, this gives it a unique feel which attracts the many tourists to the town and it is these tourists that the town depends on for its prosperity today.

Modern Tenby depends on a thriving tourist industry
