The world beneath our feet holds boundless secrets, and macro photography is the key to unlocking them. This intimate photographic style shrinks the viewer down to the scale of the subject, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Here, a cluster of delicate, golden-capped toadstools emerges from a tapestry of vibrant green moss. The slight frost or dusting on the caps, coupled with the soft, diffused light, highlights the texture and subtle curves of each fungus. The shallow depth of field is essential in macro work, blurring the busy background into a painterly wash of browns and oranges, compelling the eye to focus solely on the fragile life at the center. It's a testament to the fact that the most compelling and detailed subjects often require us to pause, kneel down, and look closely at the miniature landscapes that thrive just out of our everyday focus. Macro photography challenges us to see the world not as it appears from a distance, but as a rich, detailed ecosystem demanding our attention and admiration.

Epipactis palustris (var ochroleuca) - Orchidaceae 198 24
Epipactis palustris name (palustris) refers to its usual choice of a wet marshy habitat. This preference is reflected in the orchids unsurprising common name of the Marsh Helleborine.
This is a species with a huge distribution across temperate Europe and Asia from Britain and Scandinavia in the west to Siberia in the East. It can grow in dense colonies, particularly in the damp, alkaline conditions it prefers such as dune slacks and base rich fens. Epipactis palustris is not however restricted to calcareous soils and although usually in smaller numbers, seems perfectly capable of thriving not just in neutral conditions but also in moderately acid ones.
Unlike many of the members of the Epipactis genus, Epipactis palustris does not seek out shade and indeed will not flourish if surrounding vegetation gets too rank or high. Although its roots require an uninterrupted supply of moisture, the visible parts of the plant seek full sun and this accounts for its total suitability to life in the wet slacks of large dune systems. It is not however a deep rooted orchid and in fact has only a shallow root system which is well suited to vegetative reproduction in wet ground. These shallow roots also maintain the plants nutrient supply by staying clear of the deeper and poorly oxygenated permanent water level.
This is not a particularly variable species but forms with reduced dark pigmentation are common. Here, the red pigmentation is absent altogether, this variant being known as var ochroleuca.

The picture shows the characteristic long, hanging male flowers.
Pterocarya fraxinifolia is a deciduous tree in the walnut family (Juglandaceae), typically with long, hanging seed catkins (30–50 cm) that carry green, winged nuts – a clear recognition feature.
The tree has large, imparipinnate leaves up to about 60 cm long with 7–27 leaflets and decorative and broad-crowned growth form, often with multiple stems and a short, thick trunk.
The tree is native to the Caucasus region and northern Iran, but often planted in parks and large gardens across Europe because of its ornamental value and ability to thrive in damp areas.

This is the mama American Alligator that has done such a good job protecting last summer's hatchlings that at least 7 and maybe as many as 10 are beating the odds and still thriving on Horsepen Bayou. I call her Dolly because she was (and perhaps still is) the mate of the bruiser I call Big Boy, both named for coloring book characters from the Shoney's Restaurant of my youth in Tennessee. I first took notice of Dolly around 10 years ago, at which time she was already more than 9 feet long, exceptionally large for a female gator. Given their slow rate of growth once they hit the 6-foot mark, she could easily be 30 years old by now, maybe older. While she seems fairly tolerant of people, she is somewhat battle-scarred and I'm guessing any of the neighborhood bulls who might be interested in taking one of her offspring has learned not to mess with her.
Here, she is waving for the attention of the young'uns, signalling them to watch and learn.
It feels like a miracle!! Little Holly came to me last night for dinner with her little head ready for a scratch!! She is loving, still a bit nervous, but she is going to be fine!! She has been grooming and already looks some better!! What a happy ending, I think!

Desert flowers are little things. But when the time is right, they can be massive, thriving all over the seemly impossible place and blooming in your heart.
After a lull in hummingbird activity in the area for several weeks, I'm thrilled to be hosting three juvenile Anna's hummingbird in my yard. They have been the sweetest joy to watch grow and thrive. They change so quickly & are now busy practicing territorial displays with each other, an adult Rufous Hummingbird male & and an adult Anna's male.

I visited Joppa Hill Farm today, a community farm owned by the town of Bedford, NH. I love community farms, as they usually let you walk around and meet the animals. It's also nice that they're owned by their community, who are invested in making it a thriving farm, often with an educational purpose.
These goats are among a half dozen or so living there, and they are friendly. They enjoyed some pats and scratchies for Christmas.
