Ribwort Plantains are not explosively colorful but I've always rather liked them because of their long stamens topped by white blinkers full of pollen. They attract insects such as this Dronefly who thrive on pollen.

We wanted to test how a pear tree thrives here in the very north over 60 latitudes. So far all well.

Once a thriving maritime hub, this secluded staithe is now heavily silted and primarily used by a handful of small pleasure craft and fishing boats.
During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the remote creeks served as a notorious landing spot for smuggling syndicates offloading contraband tea, tobacco, and alcohol. Legend even suggests secret tunnels linked the harbour directly to the nearby Lifeboat Inn.

This is what happens to chives (Allium schoenoprasum) if you let them do their thing. How nice that there is a common garden plant you can either sew and pick early for food, or instead let grow and then admire its beauty.

Thos palm suffered greatly over winter when our SC overnight temp had a sudden drop to 12°. I had wondered if it would survive, since all of the fronds were turned brown. It not only survived the unusual cold, but has thrived.
A remarkable variety of moss and lichen species can thrive in even the smallest spaces. Here, they grow atop a concrete barrier along the Snoqualmie River Bridge in Fall City, Washington. Unlike the ferns found on the forest floor nearby, these organisms lack true leaves, stems, or roots. But this primitive structure allows them to colonize nearly any shaded, moist surface, even concrete.
Skerries, a picturesque and historic seaside town, is a thriving and friendly community with tree lined, carefully preserved and quaint streets, adorned with hanging baskets in the summer.

One of the many Valley Oaks thriving in the Monte Bello Open Preserve. The contrast between the clear blue sky and the crisp golden field below was something to marvel at on this sunny day.

Tufted duck on Hatherton Lake, Walsall Arboretum. There’s quite a thriving community of tufted duck on the lake these days, always nice to see.
A lone Plains Bison (Bison bison) bull in a restored prairie. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Adams County, Colorado.
Just 40 years ago the land beneath this bison's feet was one of the most polluted sites in the west. Contaminated from decades of use as an arsenal that manufactured and destroyed chemical weapons including napalm, mustard gas, white phosphorus, and more. The land, water, and air were all impacted. Red flags were raised when local wildlife, including tens of thousands of ducks were found dead in the vicinity of the arsenal.
By the mid-1980's, these operations ceased and remediation became the focus of the site, and it was soon declared a Superfund Site. In 1986, Bald Eagles, then an Endangered Species, were discovered utilizing the site. That spurred an effort to declare the site a National Wildlife Refuge, and a few years later, land that once served to manufacture weapons of war now provided sanctuary for an abundance of wildlife.
In 2007, plains bison were reintroduced to the refuge, where they thrived in the restored shortgrass prairies. In 2015 and 2016, black-footed ferrets were reintroduced adjacent to the refuge's expansive prairie dog towns. Today, it is one of only a handful of sites with a free-ranging population of these critically endangered members of the weasel family.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is a true success story, and well worth a visit the next time you find yourself in the Denver area.

While there are many wild iguanas in Southern and Central America, green iguanas are the most common in the United States. They can reach up to six feet long from head to tail and weigh about eight to seventeen pounds. Although their name states otherwise, iguanas can differ in color from dark gray or pale brown to bright orange or dull green. Along with comb-like spines that run across these reptiles' backs, they are covered in scales and have a membrane that hangs underneath their jaws.
Green iguanas possess a row of spines along their backs and along their tails, which helps to protect them from predators. Their whip-like tails can be used to deliver painful strikes and like many other lizards, when grabbed by the tail, the iguana can allow it to break, so it can escape and eventually regenerate a new one. In addition, iguanas have a well-developed dewlap, which helps regulate their body temperature. This dewlap is used in courtships and territorial displays.
The original small populations in the Florida Keys were stowaways on ships carrying fruit from South America. Over the years, other iguanas were introduced into the wild, mostly originating through the pet trade. Some escaped and some were intentionally released by their owners; these iguanas survived and then thrived in their new habitat.
They commonly hide in the attics of houses and on beaches. They often destroy gardens and landscaping. Additionally on Marco Island, green iguanas have been observed using the burrows of the Florida burrowing owl, a species of special concern, all of which can make them more of a serious threat to Florida's ecosystem than originally believed.

Centaurea paxorum: Rare biennial or perennial plant. Local endemic to Paxos and Antipaxos (Ionian Islands). Thrives in vertical / sloping limestone rocky places near the sea (0-150 m.).
Thriving in a precarious position on the cliffs, a Ice plant lends some colour to the terrain above the Pacific Ocean swell.

Remember the baby Mistle Thrush I told you about that landed from nowhere on my back fence a few weeks ago... well I think this was him back to see me last night, and he seems to be doing well :-)

Once a thriving silver mining town in Colorado's history during the 1800's, Ashcroft was abandoned after the silver deposits dwindled. But in 1883, Ashcroft was a town with a population of 2,000 or more with two newspapers, a school, sawmills, a small smelter, six hotels and 20 saloons; bigger than Aspen, Colorado. Today, just 9 buildings remain including the post office, several cabins, an outhouse, a couple of the once roaring saloons and a hotel.
An early snow storm blanketed the Elk Mountain Range and created a ghostly, somber feel to the town, but the beauty of the golden leafed aspens against the white, mountain snow was beautiful, peaceful.

The Fall colors were thriving in October 1992 along the west branch of the Susquehanna River, as this Conrail freight moves east between Hyner and Lock Haven, PA.
Desert Center, Ca. founded in the 1920's was a thriving desert roadside oasis along US 60 that dried up when I-10 bypassed the little town as well as the closing of Kaiser steel who's mine was in the mountains just north of Desert Center. I have been exploring this little gem for years and it's sad to see it crumble more each time I visit....

For many, the Arctic is synonymous of a hostile environment and for most of the time, it is true. But each year, for a very short period the Arctic changes.
This extremely sensitive natural environment that is fully productive each year only for a few weeks enables survival of many different species unseen anywhere else in the world.
One can’t stress enough how important it is to protect this place and shield its environment from all types of destruction.
