“Charlestown grew out of the small fishing village of West Polmear, which consisted of a few cottages and three cellars, in which the catch of pilchards were processed. The population amounted to nine fishermen and their families in 1790. Before the harbour was built, trading vessels landed and loaded on the beach. Charles Rashleigh, who moved to Duporth Manor, just outside the village, used plans prepared by John Smeaton to begin the construction of a harbour and dock in 1791. After building the outer pier, he excavated a natural inlet to form the main dock and a shipyard at its inner end that was demolished when the dock was extended. The first dock gates were completed in 1799. To maintain water levels in the dock, a leat was constructed, which brought water from the Luxulyan Valley, some 6.4 km away.”
Three years ago I ran west to Bergen to stand in this cornfield for a hour waiting on what at the time was just "another K train with ICE/DME/CP EMDs". I was bummed about the high sun and mixed paint jobs.
My main reason for visiting this area, which included Kruger National Park, was to see the Three Rondavels on the Panorama Route. We were lucky to have a lovely afternoon view of it as the next day all the mountains were covered in cloud.

Three female California quail on my favourite gnarly moss-covered Garry oak tree. They were startled by something which triggered them to quickly fly en masse into this tree, keenly observing below. I quickly grabbed my camera as I rarely see them in this tree...nature’s perfect stage.

My dad must have carved these tiny, fragile objects when he was a boy. The matches have been made into a little wooden puzzle (no glue here). And two pieces of blackboard chalk have been made into a chain link and an elaborate carving.
Looking for three things to photograph for Macro Mondays "Three" theme I rummaged through some old boxes and found a bit of ancient personal history in an old tobacco tin. A little bundle of blackboard chalk creations that included a bi-plane, a spiral shell and an elaborate hollow tower even more delicate and finely patterned than the little one in this image.
These things are so delicate I am surprised they have lasted so many years. A real Macro Monday bonus to stir up some lovely memories of my dad, who I sadly lost when I was but a boy myself.
