One of the recurring questions as we worked through the burn area was whether the frequently sighted birds were Black-backed or Three-toed Woodpeckers. With the snow and the wind and the stark backdrops we typically relied on binoculars to distinguish the species. The key, apart from size, was the white ladder rung pattern on the back of the Three-toed. In the end we had many fewer confirmed sightings of the Three-toed, and they mostly occurred on the snowiest of days. Here is a photograph as much for proof of the expedition and its sightings as for anything else. But I managed to get the bird, its distinctive back and head markings, in the midst of what was becoming a blizzard.

I purchased three Orchids earlier this month from the 2008 Pacific Orchid Exposition.
I picked three Orchids which (I was told) can withstand our outdoor weather). These include:
- Zygopetalum sp.
- Goodyera daibemiemse
- Maxillaria schunkeana
Three years ago today, this little lady made our family complete. I can't imagine my life without her. She is smart, sassy and mischievous. Can you tell? I'm so happy my dad got to meet her — I just wish he could see her now. She comes alive when she hears music and she loves to dance, just like my son. My dad thoroughly enjoyed watching my son dance, so I can just imagine what a kick he would have gotten from watching this pint-size ball of energy spinning around on the floor and wiggling her bottom to the beat of the music. One day soon, under perfect circumstances, I can picture my little girl dancing with her grandpa.
it was pouring in the morning, and five babblers took refuge in a tree in my garden... i could get a pic of three... (again bad light... and superfast birds, so not great quality)
Mountain Tri Koruny (Three Crowns, Polish: Trzy Korony) in Dunajec gorge between Červený Kláštor and Lesnica, Pieninský národný park (Pieniny National Park), Prešovský kraj (Prešov region), Slovakia.
Dunajec river is a tributary of the Vistula river, rising in the Tatra mountains and flowing mostly through southern Poland.
For 27 km (17 mi), Dunajec is the border between Poland and Slovakia, flowing through the Pieniny mountain range, forming the Dunajec gorge.
Rafting tours on traditional regional rafts offered by the local Goral rafters are a popular tourist attraction in Dunajec gorge.

Frankie and the new guy have three green eyes between them and also a passion for sunglasses. They're awfully cute together. I have some other ghouls coming in that I thought he might be interested in but it seems he's fallen for Frankie!
The Cure
Three Imaginary Boys (1979)
Walk across the garden
In the footsteps of my shadow
See the lights out
No one's home
In amongst the statues
Stare at nothing in
The garden moves
Can you help me?
Close my eyes
And hold so tightly
Scared of what the morning brings
Waiting for tomorrow
Never comes
Deep inside
The empty feeling
All the night time leaves me
Three imaginary boys
Slipping through the door
Hear my heart beats in the hallway
Echoes
Round and round
Inside my head
Drifting up the stairs
I see the steps behind me
Disappearing
Can you help me?
Close my eyes
And hold so tightly
Scared of what the morning brings
Waiting for tomorrow
Never comes
Deep inside
The empty feeling
All the night time leaves me
Three imaginary boys sing in my
Sleep sweet child
The moon will change your mind
See the cracked reflection
Standing still
Before the bedroom mirror
Over my shoulder
But no one's there
Whispers in the silence
Pressing close behind me
Pressing close behind
Can you help me?
Can you help me?

Shot taken at a NZFM shoot at Karekare beach. This was a planned shot, though I did not have the song in mind, just lucky there were 3 people ! Sorry Kate !
I am in a Cure phase at the moment...

I just HAD to go back for a third time to Brown-Lowery Park today, to see if I could find any new species of fungus : ). I know that soon everywhere will be covered in a layer of snow : (. In addition to a few more photogenic mushrooms, I was lucky enough to come across this male (yellow on forehead) Three-toed Woodpecker, too. Amazingly, it had flown to a tree right by the trail where I was walking, but definitely not at eye-level, suggested by this image, LOL! The light was grim, so almost all my photos will have to be deleted. Did manage to rescue about four of them, though. These birds are uncommon year-round; irruptive.
Three rich and full-flavored Ghirardelli Chocolate treats for the Senior Moments group Alphabet Challenge "A to Z Finale".
Scooter (front) joined her sisters Hope and Joy at the pet fair this weekend. She is being treated for heartworm and therefore wasn't out last weekend. They seem to think squeezing all three into the litter box is the best thing to do.
Update 11/28/2009: Little Hope found someone to take her home today, yeay! The other two actually didn't come out to the pet fair since they managed to hurt themselves and were limping this week.
Update Jan. 2010: All of these three cuties have been adopted by now. Hurray!
Three hours waiting for my flight and here is one of the results. Another shot from outside the International terminal at SFO. Original image has been cropped a bit for a pano as the light at the top of the pole was a bit intrusive!
These three badasses stood watch on the Southwest part of Cinder Cone's outer rim. That's Snag Lake in the background.
Doc Stebbins' little nephew came down for the summer. He's a real precocious tyke, Ernest is, both mechanically and with the second sight. Here Ernest is entertaining the three headless angels by giving them a ride on the machine he constructed. Little do the angels know it's a working time machine... The little imp's apple hasn't fallen far from his uncle's tree.
