Photographed on the Chesapeake Bay from the cockpit of a cruising sailboat near Hampton Roads, Virginia. The lighthouse is on the main shipping channel in to the Hampton Roads area that includes the Norfolk Naval Operations Base, Newport News, Hampton and Portsmouth. Aside from being the home of the world's largest naval base, Norfolk is also a busy commercial shipping port.

The 52 miles between Kingman and the Colorado River at Topock is the original Mother Road. Predating the declaration of Route 66 in 1926, it was built for the stream of prospectors looking to stake a claim in the Oatman Gold Rush of 1902. It is representative of the Mother Road mentioned in John Steinbeck's "Grape's of Wrath" and best symbolizes Route 66 during the American Great Depression of the 1930's. By 1952, America’s love affair with big cars won over, and Route 66 was rerouted to the current alignment of I-40.
Thimble Butte is not far off that path and gives the area a definite Radiator Springs Vibe.

I found this lovely silver thimble whilst sorting through my mother's things during her flat clearance. It was never lost exactly but I didn't know she had it so it was a brilliant find for me!

This thimble was photographed with a long fixed focal length, so that forms a nice bokeh. The aesthetics of this plant almost make us forget how toxic it is. Already the consumption of 2-3 leaves can be deadly.
In the 18th century most women had to or wished to sew in order to make, mend or modify their clothes. The Charles Horner retail jewellery business sold a wide variety of thimbles in silver or gold. They soon found that ordinary silver thimbles were popular but were not particularly durable. Steel needles pierced the softer silver of the thimble – very painful for the user!
In the early 1880s, Charles Horner patented the relatively simple idea of a silver thimble sandwich with a strong, steel ‘middle’. He went on to design, perfect and patent the steel-cored silver thimble, registering his famous trade name ‘Dorcas’ – an inspired invention on which the Charles Horner business thrived, selling many thousands of the thimbles throughout Britain as well as abroad.

In Dutch we call foxglove 'vingerhoedskruid' and when you translate 'vingerhoed' literal, it says fingerhat...., in English that is a thimble :)
