THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM: OUR PERSPECTIVE.

Friends, .

The World Social Forum (WSF) is going to be held in Mumbai from 16th to 21st January,2004. The WSF is an annual event where organizations and groups from across the world, who areopposed to the present unequal, unjust and exploitative world order and who endeavour to build ademocratic and egalitarian alternative to globalised capitalism, come together to share theirexperiences and evolve common grounds for future struggles The distinctiveness of the WSF liesin the fact that it offers an open meeting space to organizations with diverse outlooks and concerns. The approach is to facilitate an exchange of ideas rather than imposing a single view upon everyparticipant, as well as to provide opportunities for building alliances between organizations acrossthe world. This is for the first time that the WSF is being held outside Porto Allegre in Brazil, where it.

was successively held over the past three years. and India has been chosen as the venue. .

TheWSF in Mumbai would provide a broader opportunity for all those in our country, who aspire for abetter world and have been involved in struggles for social and economic justice, to participate inthis international event..

The processes underlying globalisation today-the depredations of speculative financecapital, adoption of deflationary macroeconomic policies and the retreat of the welfare statefollowing IMF-World Bank prescriptions, the unbridled domination of production and trade by the.

multinational corporations imposed by the WTO-and the consequent intensification of exploitationof labour by capital, rising income inequalities, unemployment and insecurity in the advancedeconomies, industrial recession and acute agrarian crisis afflicting developing countries, environmental degradation, and the proliferation of big and little chauvinisms and exclusivistideologies are adversely affecting the lives of millions across the globe in myriad ways. The invasionand occupation of Iraq in the name of fighting terrorism has also thoroughly exposed the barbaricand predatory nature of U.S. led imperialism. The movement against imperialist globalisation and.

military aggression has also, however, gathered momentum in the recent past with large numbers of.

people joining global protest actions during the Iraq invasion and the WTO meeting at Cancun. These global protest actions were made possible because of the coordination between severalparticipant organizations during the WSF 2003 at Porto Allegre. The WSF 2004 would providefurther opportunities to strengthen this global movement against imperialist globalisation.Although the commonality in the vision of the participants of the WSF lies in their oppositionto neoliberal capitalism and imperialist globalisation, the nature and extent of that opposition variesacross participants. Our oppos1t1on to Imperialist globalisat1on is not restricted to certain facets of itand we believe that the problems of the present world order can only be solved through thereplacement of capitalism by the alternative socio-economic system of socialism. However, we feelthat it is important, in order to advance in the struggle for an alternative to capitalism, to buildbridges with those who are critical of the present system but who do not agree with our vision of thealternative. Capitalism today survives more than anything else, on the basis of the logic that 'Thereis No Alternative' to it. In this context the key slogan of the WSF. that .

'Another World is Possible',.

provides the basis for establishing the broadest possible unity among all those who want to changethe present world order. That unity of progressive forces across the globe against imperialist.

globalisation is the need of the hour. .

GLOBALISE THE STRUGGLE AGAINST IMPERIALIST GLOBALISATION! .

An anonymous notice on the WSF issue has been put up in the campus today. This.

notice is in extremely bad taste and we condemn against such mischievous attempts.

which go against the norms of public debate in our campus. .
