This photograph was taken in August 2007 by Barry Howard at the annual memorial service at the Jim Comerford Miners Memorial Wall in Aberdare, 2007. The service was attended by many dignitaries and families of miners killed in the industry. A bust of the late Jim Comerford was unveiled by then Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
This photograph is from the collection of Barry Howard, who was an Electrician at local coal mines such as Hebburn No. 2 and Northern (Rhondda) Colliery, and at Saxonvale Colliery, further up the Hunter Valley. Mr Howard has very kindly permitted us to to publish these photographs on this website for the benefit of researchers and for those who served in the mines and their families.

I developed my second concept: The superhero has conquered Cereal Mountain with nothing but a spoon! What a feat! :)
In terms of composition and readability, I think I was successful. But I had very different plans for the coloring. I'm really, really held back by the fact that I have little experience with Photoshop and Illustrator. I had intended to digitally paint this piece to add shadows and depth, but I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the background, let alone use any brushes (yes, even after a couple tutorials and endless attempts). So I was limited to live painting. It took away a lot of the detail I had in my penned drawing, but the blocky coloring adds to the comic-like aesthetic of the final design.

Ett fornminne med beteckningen Bergum 2:1. Detta är det enda gravfältet i Bergum. Det består av högar och
runda stensättningar. Gravfältet har troligen anlagts under yngre
järnålder (500 - 1050 e Kr) och ligger på den ås som löper ut
från det så kallade Galgaberget i norr. Åsen ligger i en dalgång
som troligen varit odlad seedan yngre järnålder då bygden
baserad på åkerbruk och boskapsskötsel expanderar. Namnen
Domelihög och Galgaberget tyder på traditioner om att platsen
spelat en roll i äldre tiders rättsskipning.
Gravarna har byggts över ett brandlager som innehåller resterna
från likbålet. Tillsammans med den dödes brända ben finns ofta
lerkärl och personliga tillhörigheter i form av kammar, dräktspännen,
brynen och så vidare. Ibland förekommer även vapen.

Ancient object designated Bergum 2:1. This is the only burial ground in Bergum. It consists of piles and stone circles. The burial ground was probably built during the Late Iron Age (500 - 1050 AD) and is located on the ridge that runs out
from the so-called Galgaberget in the north. The ridge is located in a valley which has probably grown since the Late Iron Age when the district
based on agriculture and animal husbandry expands. The names
Domelihög and Galgaberget suggest traditions of the place
played a role in earlier times jurisdiction.
Graves have been constructed over a fire stock containing residues
from the corpse pyre. Along with the dead man's burnt bones are often
earthen and personal belongings in the form of combs, costume buckles,
brows and so on. Sometimes there are also weapons.
