About Gwalior Fort
Gwalior Fort in Gwalior, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, stands on an isolated rock, overlooking the Gwalior town, and contains a number of historic buildings. It is one of the biggest forts in India and a postage stamp has been issued by the Indian Postal Service to commemorate the importance of this fort. From historical records, it is established that it was built in the 8th century. The fortress and the city have been integral to the history of the kingdoms of North India. It is said that the Mughal Emperor Babur (1483–1531) described it as, "The pearl in the necklace of the forts of Hind". The fort, also given the epithet "Gibraltar of India', provides a panoramic view of the old Gwalior town, which is to its east.
The fort’s history relates to two parts namely, the main fort and the Gurjari Mahal and the Man Mandir palace. The first part was built during the early Tomar rule, while the second part, the Gurjari Mahal (now a Museum) and the palace, was constructed by Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century for his favourite queen, Mrignayani.
Gwalior Fort also occupies a unique place in the human civilization as the place which has the first ever recorded use of zero. Also referred as 'Shunya' in sanskrit, this site is of mathematical interest because of what is written on a tablet recording the establishment of a small 9th century Hindu temple on the eastern side of the plateau. By accident, it records the oldest "0" in India for which a definite date can be assigned.

Heute sind von der im frühen 12. Jahrhundert erbauten Burg noch die Vorburg, die Hauptburg
und der Haupthof erhalten.
Die Burg sicherte ursprünglich vermutlich die Herrschaft der Zähringer oder der Burgunder
an der S.ense und S.aane zwischen L.aupen und G.ümmenen.
Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts wurden Burg und Herrschaft Grasburc von königlichen
Beamten verwaltet, bevor sie als R.eichslehen an die K.yburger kam.
1264 ging sie als Lehen an die H.absburger, welche die von M.aggenbergs, de Corbières
und die de V.uippens als Vögte einsetzte.
1310 wurde das Lehen Grasburg von Heinrich VII. an Amadeus V. von S.avoyen verpfändet.
Von nun an verfiel die Burg zusehends und verlor an Bedeutung, weshalb sie 1423 an die
S.tädte B.ern und F.reiburg verkauft wurde, die sie gemeinsam verwalteten.
1575 wurde die Burg aufgegeben und die Herrschaft über den heutigen Amtsbezirk
S.chwarzenburg wurde von nun an vom S.chloss S.chwarzenburg aus geführt.
1803 ging die Ruine Grasburg an den S.taat B.ern.
Sie wurde zwischen 1984 und 1986 so gesichert, dass sie gefahrlos besichtigt und
begangen werden kann.
Ein sehr schönes M.odell der Burg steht im h.istorischen M.useum in B.ern
