It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words....in the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by only six words — in reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston?

Three thousand
Haiku to examine
Two persimmons
- Masaoka Shiki
1 - something black (ink)
2 - something white (paper)
3 - shot in color
I worked really hard to design this shot from the very beginning. It was challenging to build dynamic tension by adjusting the angle of each element so that it had varying distances between other adjacent elements.
A close friend of mine inked the classic haiku on fancy paper with that very brush. My figurative persimmons are the eventual framing this lovely, handcrafted piece of art and this tasty piece of vegan sushi. Yum!
I think this poem reminds us that, although we all have to work, sometimes a lot, it's a good idea to keep in mind the little rewards at the end of a job well done.
A quick note about the creation of the haiku art: we took a kanji font built into Adobe Creative Cloud, and typed the glyphs from the original poem into Photoshop. I selected "bottom/center/top" for each line of vertical text. This was then used as the reference for painting the glyphs. It ends up looking a lot like something the professional haiku studios do (and charge a couple hundred dollars for a custom painting of) for a fraction of the cost.
Fun fact: did you know that it's challenging to hold sushi with chopsticks, pull focus, and take a picture all at the same time, with only two hands?

Macro Mondays challenge .. Monday February 13: "Love Songs'"
one of my all time fave songs . by Bob Dylan
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwSZvHqf9qM wow almost 5 million views . i guess i am not alone
Early one morning the sun was shining
I was laying in bed
Wond'ring if she'd changed it all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
And I was standing on the side of the road
Rain falling on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues getting through
Tangled up in blue.
This is just terrible. I rarely get time to draw or do any "art" anymore. I am not complaining, my life has been very busy and fun mostly. Some challenges too. But I've been wanting to draw some Zentangles and I finally had time today and I think it is terrible. I did it without "strings" thinking it would be easier to be "free" with the patterns, and it is just ugly. All the ones I see online or in books are so beautiful and just flow together nicely.
Well, this technically is my 500th texture I've made available under the Creative Commons License. Yaaaa!
I'm grateful to everyone for downloading the files, using them in your life, and leaving comments and positive feedback.
Thanks again!

For William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement, nature was the source of all pattern. The inspiration of the natural world, 'the outward face of the earth', was chosen for its uplifting qualities.

This manuscript is one of the relatively few illustrated Byzantine copies of the Acts and Epistles of the Apostles. It consists of three parts produced at different dates: the New Testament text with its accompanying prefatory material (known as Euthalian apparatus, after the name of its supposed compiler Euthalius) was copied in the early twelfth century, then lists of readings were added at two stages, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, to facilitate their use in church. Some of the Epistles have lost the miniature that once marked their beginning. A couple of lost leaves were replaced in the sixteenth century.

I hope you all had a delightfully fun weekend! I made the most of every single second of mine! I accomplished a whole bunch of clean up and laundry on Saturday morning....and food shopping (I detest that job!), a little editing and then went to spend the evening with my bean. Bean II went with his mama and daddy to their evening out at a church dinner. Sunday brought a bit of a lazy morning, as i added myself to Fine Arts America....still working on setting the rest of that up....then went to church....a MOST interesting service today about Judas. Afterwards, i decided that i deserved a day out....just me and my camera. I thought about going to check on the Eagles at Merrill Creek, but i have been lax about buying my new hiking boots.....really need them for the trails. Decided to hit the road in another pursuit entirely. I went to find the town, dubbed as NJ’s Ghost Town. Walpack Center is just under an hour from where i live, and i was set to do this on my own, when i got a call from a friend...when she heard what i was doing, she said she wished she could tag along, but had to pay bills. I told her i was going alone then....if she changed her mind to get to me before 1:45pm. Sure enough....1:30 she texted and asked if i minded having company.....i think she was simply worried about me going to a Ghost Town alone....and what kind of trouble might locate me there! Truth be told, if there is gonna be trouble, it will find me even if she is there!
When i got us there, i was slightly underwhelmed at first. It was a tad too pristine for having been abandoned in the late 1960’s....but, once i parked the car and began to wander around, i began to find things that perked my curiosity. If i could have gotten into the buildings, i certainly would have....but they were all locked up, so i had to be content with peering into windows. I also began to wonder what led to this mass exodus....and decided when i came home to spend a few moments after making dinner, checking it on online.
The story was fascinating....i only knew when i went, that it had something to do with the building of a dam, and that the town had been bought out by the state.....but it was much more than just that! It was positively frightening how it all came down. I suppose i was too young to know about it as a kid....altho i do have a recollection of the name Tock’s Island Dam Project....but not from my childhood here in Jersey....possibly just from later, hearing it discussed.
The story is one of the strange ones in the book, Weird NJ. If you are at all curious, you can read the short story of the saga of Walpack Center here:
www.weirdnj.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=vie...
I can not wait to go back....the town center is only 1 block long and no one lives there except a caretaker....but there are so many other abandoned homes and farms scattered around it in Walpack Twp.....and there is a simply gorgeous hiking trail that totals 9 miles, and encompasses several waterfalls...the prettiest, being Buttermilk Falls....2nd highest in NJ. Oh, yes...i will be getting new boots this week!! A return trip is imminent!!
Oh, and just because i could not get into the buildings PHYSICALLY, there was no reason i could not do it in the ghostly self portrait way that i have become accustomed to doing when i find old windows that i like!! :)
This one, with it’s varied reflections reminds me of “a four piece”, a pattern of quilting!
ENJOY!

This manuscript, written at the Cistercian abbey of Himmerode in Germany in the early thirteenth century, is one of twenty-two surviving Latin copies of the Speculum Virginum, or Mirror for Virgins. Attributed to Conrad of Hirsau, the text was written in the first half of the twelfth century as a guide for nuns, and offered them theological lessons in the form of a hypothetical conversation between a teacher, Peregrinus, and his student, Theodora. The twelve illustrations in the manuscript portray the protagonists as well as the mystical visions and diagrams they discuss in the text. The large, expressive pen drawings bring the text to life, and are an excellent example of German art of this period.

The quote is from the song Poem by Ed's Redeeming Qualities (they're the funniest band EVER).
I love how it turned out! I designed the flower borders myself and though the lack of perfect symmetry is extremely frustrating I'm not too bothered. This picture doesn't do it justice, it looks WAY better in person.
