In Chiloé Island, Chile, traditional houses are entirely covered in wood tiles, measuring aroung 60x10 cm each (aprox. 24x4"). Originally all tiles were straight, but each owner tried to make his home unique by cutting the tiles in different shapes. Different styles emerged, and when shapes alone were not enough, owners started to combine, arrange and paint to create unique styles. The result is a immense variety of wood tiling.
In this collection I tried to show a selection of wood tilings, and I also tried to create a coding for identifying unique tiles and arrangements.

A metal information board telling the strange story of how the Immaculate Conception Church in Fairbanks, Alaska, came to be at its current location:
By August, 1904, when a Catholic priest arrived in Fairbanks, all choice lots in the center of town were taken. Father Francis Monroe, a Jesuit missionary, selected land at the edge of town, bordering the Chena River. The first Roman Catholic Church in the interior of Alaska, a small frame building, was hastily constructed during September and October.
Two years later, a hospital was built across the river by the church. To consolidate their community services, the Very Reverend Raphael Crimont, the Prefect Apostolic of Alaska, directed in 1911 that the church be moved across the river. The contractor engaged to move the church intended to construct a bridge over the river. Father Monroe vetoed the plan and took charge. The church was rolled across the ice and set on its present site in November.
A typical "week" after all the checks are done. We record the dates in the work itself. If we're ever audited by a school district, they'll have fun sorting it all out.
Ornamental Eagle signal installed at the intersection of Huey and Mason Avenues in Drexel Hill. Yes, that is indeed a STOP sign next to a solid yellow light, talk about MUTCD violation. The signal goes to solid red when the trolley crosses.
This place has come a long ways since #houseofcards but seems to lack that gritty charm which made it almost cute :-)

The sign with the counter (countersign?) was seen in a shop window just off Park Avenue in New York in October 2008.
Then there was still more than 106 days left to Bush's last day.

World War 2 shrapnel damage on the walls of London's Victoria & Albert Museum, left visible and unrepaired as [quote] 'a memorial to the enduring values of this great museum in a time of conflict'
The bomb(s) which caused this blast damage would have fallen in Exhibition Road, between the V&A and the Science Museum (which also shows some damage, albeit a much lesser amount) opposite.

Temperatures struggled to reach freezing in Bakewell, England, yesterday and cafes were even advertising Heat on their menus.
A brief description of the internment, from 1942 to 1945, of 17,867 persons of Japanese ancestry at the Poston War Relocation Center (internment camp). From the center of the plaque:
“This memorial is dedicated to all those men, women and children who suffered countless hardships and indignities at the hands of a nation misguided by wartime hysteria, racial prejudice and fear. May it serve as a constant reminder of our past so that Americans in the future will never again be denied their constitutional rights and may the remembrance of that experience serve to advance the evolution of the human spirit”
