The C111 was a series of experimental automobiles produced by Mercedes-Benz in the 1960s and 1970s. The company was experimenting with new engine technologies, including Wankel engines, Diesel engines, and turbochargers, and used the basic C111 platform as a testbed.

The Boeing 747 began as a concept for a U.S. Air Force contract competition to design a heavy lift cargo aircraft. That contest was eventually won by the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, but Boeing’s failure to win that contract led it to develop one of the most iconic aircraft ever. The first 747 made its maiden flight in February 1969 and the type made its first commercial flight less than a year later. Since then the humpbacked shape of the 747 has become familiar to millions of travelers around the world. The “Jumbo Jet” is the first twin isle airliner and in some configurations could carry more than 500 passengers. This immense size allowed a much lower operating cost per seat and helped bring long distance air travel into the price range of vastly more people. Boeing has built more than 1,560 since 1969. As of 2018, only about 20 remain to be delivered. The era of the 747 as a passenger plane is coming to an end as it is replaced by more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft, but it will continue to be in use as a cargo plane for many years to come.

 

It was built by Boeing Aircraft Company at Everett, Washington and delivered to Pan American World Airways on March 21, 1970. It is the twenty-fifth 747 built. Following Pan Am’s practice of naming its aircraft, this airplane flew with the name “Clipper Star of the Union” until 1982 when it was renamed “Clipper Ocean Spray.” It remained with Pan Am until the bankruptcy of the airline in 1991. In March 1992 it was purchased by General Electric for use as an engine test bed. Since then the plane has flown more than 3,000 hours carrying various test engines for GE as they develop the engines that power many of the planes that are replacing the 747 in airline service. General Electric donated the aircraft to the Pima Air & Space Museum in November 2018.

The Gates Learjet 35 began life as a testbed aircraft, designated the Learjet 25, which first flew in May 1971. After further work on the aircraft design and engine combination, Learjet produced a new aircraft, namely the Learjet 35; the prototype of which first flew on the 22nd August 1973. The aircraft was powered by a pair of Garrett TFE731-2-2A turbofan engines.

Voodoo One, a modified flying testbed 727-200 (N289MT) aircraft for Raytheon departing LAX from Runway 25L. (12/10/13)

An heavily modified Su-7B, this aircraft was a testbed for a winter weather interceptor, and was equiped with ski landing gear, JATO rockets, and dual braking chutes.

James Joslin '05,'07 designed and constructed this dynamic mobile robot testbed for experimentation in autonomous cooperative control and terrain characterization methods and was awarded the 2007 John C. Woodhouse Engineering Design Prize.

The clock now has hour numerals to help clarify the gradient positions/time. I kind of like the black background, but would need to change the font into something more legible.

That's another Turin sky view. 6 5MP photos merged together with HDR Fattal algorithm. Definitely not a beautiful subject, but good as HDR testbed.

C/n 6407 ex G-APDF. Bought by the MOD on 1-3-67 and used as a flying testbed for the Nimrod project. Scrapped in August 1997 at Boscombe Down, the cockpit section being saved and preserved at Chipping Campden, Glos, as a flight simulator.

Shown here towards the left, a BNC DB-2 pulse generator is exercising an Ortec 473 constant fraction discriminator while center and right a bicron probe is talking cesium to a LeCroy qVT 3001 combination MCA and timing analyzer.

 

Previously tested but not in circuit for today's run, an Ortec 572 stands by knowing it can do better with combined pole zero, pile-up rejection, and baseline stabilization.

 

The empty space in the center is intended to be filled by a digital delay generator now en route that should allow me to dial in the timing pulses to the LeCroy to the nearest nanosecond for some fun time-of-flight experiments.

 

This is my first experience with eBay NIM component purchases. Virtually everything has required some troubleshooting and repair or adjustment. I took care to slow ramp the applied power with a variac so exploding electrolytics were not a problem so far. But the commonly used C&K panel switches, after three decades, show internal contact intermittents that Deoxit seems to resolve, and on the rear, there was one bad solder joint to a gold plated switch lug that I suspect was due to a gold intermetallic issue.

NS 3528 (Former HLCX 7149 - BN 7149 ) is one of 80 EMD SD40-2's recently acquired from Helm Leasing, and one of the most unique. The unit still carries its special BN paint and decals it received when it was converted to burn LNG (Natural Gas) and also has flared radiators (a feature not normally found on a SD40-2)

An interesting jet over San Diego. I never see any other pictures of all the cool jets that fly over San Diego in Class A airspace by anyone else. It's a shame, as I've seen some really interesting planes in Class A before, including this one, Air Transat A310s & A330s, an An-124, and soon the Aeromexico 787. Also during the winter it will be possible to see 3 787s in one day in San Diego just by staying at SAN: AMX57, JAL66/65, and LAN603. Note the test engine (#2). I had to take a closer look before seeing this was the bigger engine.

The XK120 was launched in roadster (OTS) form at the 1948 London Motor Show as a testbed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine. It caused a sensation, which persuaded William Lyons to put it into production.

 

The "120" in its name referred to its 120 mph top speed making the XK120 the world's fastest standard production car at the time of its launch. The OTS was short for Open Two-Seater.

 

XK120s were active in racing and rallying with Leslie Johnson driving the car to it's first-ever race victory at Silverstone in 1949.

 

The pairing of Petrina Higgs (Driver) & Doreen Cox (Navigator) took the car to overall 44th position and secured 2nd in the B3 classification at the 2010 Three Castles Rally in North Wales.
