The catalyst (ha!) for this shootout, a well-spec'd Banshee Wildcard with a good history. I knew a full suspension bike was in the cards eventually, and with 10 months and a conservative estimate of 80 rides under my belt, I feel my riding style has developed enough to check out some bikes. Since the North Shore now plays host to most of my rides, and I love the slow, steep technical riding that the area is famous for, there was only one place to do the shootout: Mt. Fromme.
Like many, I was hesitant to buy a full suspension bike in the first place, as there is such an overwhelming variance in frame designs and intended usage. I could say I didn't want to take the financial gamble, but considering what original parts are left from the brand new bike I bought in January, that would be a moot point. The truth is I didn't want to make a mistake in geometry choice, and an XC hardball seemed a good next step after a successful cyclocross season. Little did I know I would get so hooked on Shore riding, and an XC bike is usually the wrong choice up there.
The ability to climb comfortably was fairly high priority in this search. The climb up Fromme can be under an hour to the top, but that's still a fair amount of time in the saddle if you're doing it a couple times a week. I've had the chance to get on quite a few full suspension bikes this year to see how they go, and have rarely been impressed with the climbing characteristics of longer-travel bikes. (Side note: on our final short climb from Bobsled to Natural High today, we saw a guy pushing a Wildcard up the hill. I would bet that most people who own this bike don't pedal it much.)
I accidentally pedalled the Wildcard up to Seventh Secret without propedal turned on the other day. The linkage doesn't give feedback into the pedals too badly, and bobs a bit, but predictably. With propedal turned on, the linkage hardly moves at all. The "XC shortcut" at the first switchback is doable on flat pedals, and that's about what I'm expecting from a Shore bike.
The Wildcard is advertised as a slopestyle and short-travel freeride bike, with rear travel adjustable to both 5" and 6.5". The geometry encourages jumping off anything you see on the trail, which is just my style. I got myself into trouble a few times on Seventh Secret blasting off little lips that approached with more speed than the hardtail would allow. On woodwork, the geometry makes things nice and stable, and pedalling on skinnies does not upset that handling. I'm really glad I didn't fall into the now-filled-with-water holes on Ladies Only.
Rolling straight in to the Semi-Retarded rock face on Ladies, the Wildcard felt as comfortable as Billy's Wildcard when I rode it down there. Khaled often has to up the ante, and did so today by riding the ridiculous line next door, Big Stupid. If I was not on a borrowed bike, I well may have followed him.
I should mention the way the Wildcard felt on Bobsled, Mt. Fromme's new machine-built berms and gaps trail. As with the little drops and root bumps on Seventh Secret, the Wildcard carries so much speed that I gapped two new doubles that had never seemed an option on my hardtail. With some sections of brake bumps now forming, this trail is as close an approximation we can get to a Whistler-style trail in Vancouver, and I was quite impressed. With the option to move the rear shock into 6.5" travel mode, the Wildcard would be quite capable of a day at the bike park.
Over all, it seems like the Wildcard hits my criteria of pedalable Shore bike with poppy characteristics yet stable geometry for steep sections. Of course, the Banshee pedigree and this specific bike's history help make that decision a bit easier. It's time to talk.
