Tuesday:
Midday, and a good mornings sleep saw the first of the teams setting off.
Just the last 15km to base camp to go. Only one barrier, the terminal
moraine. Dick had been here the previous Sept (2006) and assured us there
should be a simple way through it. The route to the Edward Bailey Glacier
from our overnight camp was fairly straight forward, except for a 3km detour
around a lake that blocked the direct passage to the glacier snout.
The view approaching the glacier suggested the left side would give easiest
passage, however access to this side of the glacier was not the easiest due
to the river flowing from the glacier. So the centre - right it was. As we
gained height we spotted a small cairn left by Dick on his recce trip. After
this point the route finding was not too difficult, the only question is
which route would give easiest passage up the glacier. Joe's group chose to
head towards the left of the glacier to try and find what looked like the
easier ground when seen from below. The other groups chose the right hand
side, which went via a side glacier, where we got views of the next 3kms of
further boulder fields, we have called this 'Low Point' (Evan Low, who was
on our last expedition, have a good wedding). As it happened both route
choices gave access over the terminal moraine. From the discussions on the
radio it seemed the LH route may have been slightly easier, although beauty
is in the eye of the beholder. The overall verdict being "Bet Dick was glad
to fly over the B*ST*RD stuff in a helicopter." Quote from Julie, watch out
for the editor's cut of the expedition video.
Midnight (12 hours later) saw the first of the teams arriving at base camp,
to be greeted by "Town Elders" (Dick, Dave & Steve), with a brew and a
whisky to celebrate.
Last home was "Team Saga" tired but happy to be at base camp AT LAST!!!
Population at base camp now 40 happy smiling campers.
Looking round the views are great.
Dover Cargo Terminal is unrivalled in terms of its strategic location, efficiency and competitive pricing. It's a potent combination that makes the Port of Dover extremely popular with many of the leading European freight carriers, with our fantastic cross-channel ferry links to the continent.
Depuis la fenêtre, vue plongeante sur le bassin du terminal ferries. Un endroit souvent vide et masqué par un épais rideau de crachin ... mais pas ce matin-là.

Before the construction of the Hudson River tunnels, railroads approaching New York City from the Jersey side had to terminate along the Hudson Waterfront and then transfer passengers into Manhattan via ferries. CNJ Terminal, also known as Communipaw, was one of five terminals on the New Jersey side that operated this way. The Pennsylvania Railroad did so too (Exchange Place) until 1910, when the New York Tunnel Extension enabled trains to terminate at a new station in Manhattan: Penn Station. Today, Hoboken is the last riverfront terminal in operation on the Jersey side.
A not-so-subtle message on the Common Use Self Service check-in machines in an empty terminal at Schiphol Airport due to the vulcanic ash-cloud over Europe.

The New York Central Terminal in Buffalo, New York, USA, was a key railroad station from 1929 to 1979. The 17-story Art Deco style station was designed by architects Fellheimer & Wagner for the New York Central Railroad. After years of abandonment, it is in derelict condition, but is now owned by the non-profit preservation group, Central Terminal Restoration Corporation. The Central Terminal is located in what is called the Broadway-Fillmore or Polonia District of Buffalo.
The Complex
The terminal is located about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) from downtown Buffalo, and consists of several structures, some of which are or were interconnected. The complex was designed for 3200 passengers per hour.
[edit] Main Concourse
The main concourse is 225 feet (69 m) long, 66 feet (21 m) wide, and 58.5 feet (17.8 m) tall (63.5 feet [19.4 m] at the domed ends). The concourse included various rental spaces; a restaurant with a dining room, lunch room, and coffee shop; a Western Union telegraph office; and a soda fountain, along with standard station necessities. Curtiss Street ran directly below the concourse, but has been closed since the terminal closed. The concourse is currently owned by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation.
