Here are all the books I have been involved with so far (see 'notes' by moving the mouse over the picture). Of course if I had copies of all the magazines I have written for over the years I would need a wide-angle lense to fit them all in but this is a good overview of my works in my "new life"...
In my current role as a General manager for group telephony and special projects for one of the top banks in South Africa's Nedbank Limited, I am responsible ensuring that strategic intent is translated in both Operational output for telephony within the bank as well as change management coordination. My professional career spans over 15years, with focus on Customer service and operational roles. It began in Shell SA, being a operations manager in one of the first centralized Call center in SA. The customer service exposures lead me to cut my teeth at my first entrepreneurial venture in a newly democratic SA in 1994. This enabled me to manage a two of the national franchise, British Petroleum gas station,a convenience store and Chicken Licken outlet. The experience brought a much enlightned perspective of customer service-of a face to face service delivery. Which after four years became a valuable asset in my future roles as a head of contact center in BoE Bank/Nedbank Ltd. During my enterprneurial venture, I embarked on my post graduate degree. After two years, I completed the Masters in Business Administration Program at Bond University in 2001. The thrill of the program inspired me to join a bigger corporation where I would be exposed to all the business dynamics. This resulted in my position with BoE/Nedbank Ltd in 2001,as Operations manager responsible for service delivery in corporate credit card and joint venture relationship management. I then later assumed responsibility as Head of Business Unit for the Credit card contact center. Post the merger & acquisition of various smaller banks into Nedbank Ltd, I become the General manager for Group Telephony and Special projects.
A rather fine booklet issued by the GPO - General Post Office - about the Faraday Building on Queen Victoria Street in London that was "the centre of the British telephone service". Here was centred not just two major local telephone exchanges - City and Central - but also the origination point for all international calls and radio services.
The original building had been opened in 1890 to serve the Post Office Savings Bank and part was first used for telephone purposes in 1904; long distance services were added in 1904. The booklet is undated but makes play of the opening of the purpose built International Telephone Exchange section in 1933, designed by A.R. Myers, architect in the H.M. Office of Works. Faraday House was further extended in 1938/39 to deal with increasing service requirements and, in 1942, a more secure wing known as the Citadel was constructed.
The booklet describes the various services in detail and a selection of pages are scanned here. In terms of graphic design it is very much in line with the corporate 'look' of the GPO at the time that was often very contemporary in terms of both design and typography. Oddly no designer nor printer is shown.

By the mid-1930s the UK's Post Office publicity was widely regarded as being one of the most innovative amongst the public services. From being a rather stuffy Government department the Post Office had realised that to best sell its services, both postal and telephonic, it had to up the stakes when it came to the quantity and quality and this shows in a flood of posters and publicity material that used many of the most contemporary techniques. This was especially the case when it came to the telephone; this was still rather an expensive tool and to better sell the instrument and services to, say, the new and more affluent middle classes in their new suburban homes, much effort was put into marketing telephone services.
That said this rather fine item, a booklet issued in October 1937, and intended to exhort visitors from Canada and the US to "telephone back home" is in a niche rather of its own. Aside from the rather fine and eyecatching cover graphics by Eric C. Owen, the text is rather cleverly set against a backdrop of Canadian wilderness and US metropolis and includes details of the cost of calling back home. The booklet also gives details of such transatlantic calls from other European countries and time zones - the booklet was obviously aimed at visitors passing through the UK on their way to the Continent.
The one thing that does shine through are the costs of transatlantic calls; £5 11/- (Five Pounds and eleven shillings) for 3 minutes to the far west of the North American continent was serious money back then and show that the calls and the booklet must have been aimed at a very small market.
The double page spread for the United States of America shows a vivid cityscape, full of night time illuminated skyscrapers, and the table gives details of the State based rates of calls peak and off-peak.
