"The Posthof am Kornmarkt is a historic and modernized office and commercial building in downtown Trier. The listed building ensemble housed the Trier post office for several decades, with an attached post office on the ground floor.

In previous centuries, the property and its predecessor buildings were known, among other things, as Kronenburg, Königsburg and post and telegraph building. Although there were various construction phases in the building's history, in which the original complex was constantly expanded, rebuilt and repurposed, today's Posthof has retained its neo-baroque sandstone facade to this day.

The building stands on a plot of approximately 6,095 m² in downtown Trier. It has a usable area of approximately 13,500 m². The entire complex, which consists of six building parts (four-wing complex, coach house and Pesé house) as well as a total of three inner courtyards, was extensively modernized in the 1990s on behalf of the then owner, the Deutsche Bundespost.

Until 2010, the property was owned by Deutsche Telekom AG in Bonn and offered jobs to 400 employees. As part of a structural reform at Deutsche Telekom, these jobs were gradually relocated to other locations. In the end, all that remained in the building was a small Telekom branch (“T-Point”) and the technical infrastructure that was necessary to maintain inner-city telephony, the Internet and the mobile radio transmission systems.

In 2011, planning began for the revitalization of the predominantly empty ensemble. Between 2012 and 2015, extensive renovation and modernization work was carried out in all parts of the building in coordination with the monument preservation office.

Trier (/trɪər/ TREER, German: [tʁiːɐ̯]; Luxembourgish: Tréier [ˈtʀəɪɐ]), formerly and traditionally known in English as Trèves (/trɛv/ TREV, French: [tʁɛv]) and Triers (see also names in other languages), is a city on the banks of the Moselle in Germany. It lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of red sandstone in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Moselle wine region.

Founded by the Celts in the late 4th century BC as Treuorum and conquered 300 years later by the Romans, who renamed it Augusta Treverorum ("The City of Augustus among the Treveri"), Trier is considered Germany's oldest city. It is also the oldest seat of a bishop north of the Alps. Trier was one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy period in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. In the Middle Ages, the archbishop-elector of Trier was an important prince of the Church who controlled land from the French border to the Rhine. The archbishop-elector of Trier also had great significance as one of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Because of its significance during the Roman and Holy Roman empires, several monuments and cathedrals within Trier are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With an approximate population of 110,000, Trier is the fourth-largest city in its state, after Mainz, Ludwigshafen, and Koblenz. The nearest major cities are Luxembourg City (50 km or 31 mi to the southwest), Saarbrücken (80 kilometres or 50 miles southeast), and Koblenz (100 km or 62 mi northeast).

The University of Trier, the administration of the Trier-Saarburg district and the seat of the ADD (Aufsichts- und Dienstleistungsdirektion), which until 1999 was the borough authority of Trier, and the Academy of European Law (ERA) are all based in Trier. It is one of the five "central places" of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Along with Luxembourg, Metz and Saarbrücken, fellow constituent members of the QuattroPole union of cities, it is central to the greater region encompassing Saar-Lor-Lux (Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg), Rhineland-Palatinate, and Wallonia." - info from Wikipedia.

I saw this sign in Holborn station. I had tried to explain many times about Rabbit phones and how they worked - call points where you could connect your mobile phone to. I knew there'd be a sign still out there somewhere...

The NATO phonetic alphabet is used to communicate words, spelled one letter at a time, over radio or telephony devices. The alphabet was devised so that similar sounding characters, such as P and B, could be distinguished—over the radio or telephone—where the conse–quences of misinterpretation could be disastrous.

There is something about the clarity and simplicity of this system which reminded us of the Nokia Pure typeface and its role in ‘Connecting People’.

In our poster NOKIA PURE is spelt out using the Finnish version of the NATO phonetic alphabet, which is mainly comprised of Finnish Christian names.

The poster is printed from wooden plates—which were cut by computer—in a contemporary take on wood block printing. Reproducing letterforms which will mainly be experienced through the interfaces of mobile devices in a decidedly pre–digital way.

I'm not sure if these three cabins count as one place or three.

Another project for this year: Photograph all public phones in Zurich and create out of this a book. Simple reason is that they disappear rapidly due to mobile telephony.

Zurich had once 8500 public phones. The last statistic from December 2012 says that there are only 87 left! - So my task is to find and document them.

The post office at Ferry Landing (Victoria County), N.S. opened on 1 September 1884 and became Little Narrows (No. 2 / B) on 1 December 1914.

Here are all the books I have been involved with so far (see 'notes' by moving the mouse over the picture). Of course if I had copies of all the magazines I have written for over the years I would need a wide-angle lense to fit them all in but this is a good overview of my works in my "new life"...

In my current role as a General manager for group telephony and special projects for one of the top banks in South Africa's Nedbank Limited, I am responsible ensuring that strategic intent is translated in both Operational output for telephony within the bank as well as change management coordination. My professional career spans over 15years, with focus on Customer service and operational roles. It began in Shell SA, being a operations manager in one of the first centralized Call center in SA. The customer service exposures lead me to cut my teeth at my first entrepreneurial venture in a newly democratic SA in 1994. This enabled me to manage a two of the national franchise, British Petroleum gas station,a convenience store and Chicken Licken outlet. The experience brought a much enlightned perspective of customer service-of a face to face service delivery. Which after four years became a valuable asset in my future roles as a head of contact center in BoE Bank/Nedbank Ltd. During my enterprneurial venture, I embarked on my post graduate degree. After two years, I completed the Masters in Business Administration Program at Bond University in 2001. The thrill of the program inspired me to join a bigger corporation where I would be exposed to all the business dynamics. This resulted in my position with BoE/Nedbank Ltd in 2001,as Operations manager responsible for service delivery in corporate credit card and joint venture relationship management. I then later assumed responsibility as Head of Business Unit for the Credit card contact center. Post the merger & acquisition of various smaller banks into Nedbank Ltd, I become the General manager for Group Telephony and Special projects.

A rather fine booklet issued by the GPO - General Post Office - about the Faraday Building on Queen Victoria Street in London that was "the centre of the British telephone service". Here was centred not just two major local telephone exchanges - City and Central - but also the origination point for all international calls and radio services.

The original building had been opened in 1890 to serve the Post Office Savings Bank and part was first used for telephone purposes in 1904; long distance services were added in 1904. The booklet is undated but makes play of the opening of the purpose built International Telephone Exchange section in 1933, designed by A.R. Myers, architect in the H.M. Office of Works. Faraday House was further extended in 1938/39 to deal with increasing service requirements and, in 1942, a more secure wing known as the Citadel was constructed.

The booklet describes the various services in detail and a selection of pages are scanned here. In terms of graphic design it is very much in line with the corporate 'look' of the GPO at the time that was often very contemporary in terms of both design and typography. Oddly no designer nor printer is shown.
