Photography with a telephonic device, iPhone4.

Server kill switch showing on/off. Question is which way is off. Waiting to install a nice big red swich (much like you get with dangerous industrial equipment).

A better alternative maybe to install a more secure OS. Will it be able to run the telephony server?

This carousel was restored through the will & fundraising efforts of the people in this town. It's gorgeous. I'm glad they preserved it. Maybe it's not totally critical, but I hate losing things beautiful things like this to apathy. Anchorage 4th Avenue Theater, look at me when I'm talking to you...

Out of the Archives: In October 1956, a group was out mapping New York Harbor's bedrock by sonar survey. This method used new technology and was chosen for being more efficient than test borings or seismic exploration to help plan the Richmond Tunnel, which would improve water pressure and supply for Staten Island.

In 2007, only 30 percent of communities in the Dominican Republic had broadband capacity. Two years later, the Rural Broadband Connectivity Program had provided telephony and internet access to approximately 1.5 million people and 508 communities, mostly in the poorest areas. One of the benefits is access to modern health care and rapid information sharing between rural clinics and big-city clinics. When completed, the Rural Broadband Connectivity Program will position the Dominican Republic as the country with the best rural broadband infrastructure in Latin America.

I appear to be starting a collection of pictures of memorials to technology and engineering, rather than politics and battle.

This particular sign commemorates the first "long distance" (across the river) telephony, almost 134 years ago. When DSL started gaining ground in the late 1990's, one of the complaints in the Cambridge area was that while it could run over "reasonable" phone lines, it was a bit much to expect it to run over lines that Bell himself had installed... perhaps this very one :-)

It turns out that the number "174465" on the bell in the Telephone Pioneers of America logo at the top is the Patent number for the telephone! www.google.com/patents?vid=174465 "Improvement in Telegraphy" talks about using "undulatory" or "pulsatory" currents, and was basically *the* patent that mattered for the telephone itself.

(Odd that this is the first time I've seen this plaque, given that I've been around Cambridge on and off for the last 28 years, and only hunted it down because Karl mentioned it at dinner a few weeks back :-)

I am such a sucker for museums. This was one of the happiest hours of my trip!

One of my favorite displays had dozens of sheet music covers for songs about telephones -- particularly waiting for the phone to ring. Lost experiences...

Here the shotgun cable splits into the telephony (which just connects to a new master socket) and a Coax cable which goes to the router (for Internet).
