In October 1956, a group was out mapping harbor bedrock by sonar survey. Their view of Governors Island closely matched the more recent image from an educational sail by DEP and the South Street Seaport Museum, on a wooden tugboat that’s actually older than the upper photo!
The sonar survey method used new technology and was chosen for being more efficient than test borings or seismic exploration to help plan the Richmond Tunnel, which would improve water pressure and supply for Staten Island.
