This panorama, made using Sony Sweep Techology, was shot at the same art opening as the previous one. As I’ve mentioned before, if someone moves during the shooting process, fragmentation can occur. In the present pano, gallery-goer Steve Wandro came towards me with great energy as I was shooting. I knew I had a real cubist opportunity, about like Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase.” My hunch was correct.

Fragmentation like this can’t always be used. It has to somehow fit into the feeling of the panorama. In this case, there is a very nice contrast between the fractured energy of Steve Wandro and the sculpture-like calm of all others in the gallery.

I initially thought to use Microphen, but then realising that I'm working with a slow film, maybe a developer better suited for that would be best. That settled me on Perceptol instead; of course, there was then the thought to over-expose and pull in development. Thankfully I didn't go that route and shot the film at ASA-50, and I'm glad I did; the results were clean, good contrast, tonal separation and super sharp. Certainly a winning combination.

A note for my viewers, these rolls of film were purchased before the brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. After careful investigation and communication, I have found no connection between the people behind Silberra and those connected to the Russian President. Glory to Ukraine and prayers for the defenders and peace!

The ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, piloted by Athrun Zala.

One of ZAFT's five ZGMF-X Gundam units produced in CE 71 using techology derived from the four captured Alliance's Gundam, the Justice Gundam has Phase Shift Armor and its armament consists of beam sabers, a beam rifle, a shield, beam boomerangs and head-mounted CIWS guns. In addition, the Justice carries a large detachable Fatum-00 sub-flight lifter, which is capable of remote operation and has an AI system for independent operation. It is also well-armed with a pair of beam cannons and multiple machine guns, and when attached to the Justice, it improves the suit's mobility and grants it full flight capabilities in the atmosphere.

Justice also has a tall sensor spine on the top of its head, similar to that of the GAT-X303 Aegis, and this enhances its ability to collect information in the battlefield. It can dock with a support unit, the METEOR unit, for heavier firepower and greater speed, and has an advanced targeting system which allows it to fire at multiple enemy units simultaneously. The Justice Gundam is designed to be operated alongside the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and for this purpose, the warship Eternal is designed specifically to maintain both suits. Like the four other ZGMF-X Gundam units, Justice is equipped with Neutron Jammer Canceller and powered by a nuclear reactor, giving it virtually unlimited combat endurance.

I must admit that although I say that technology usage is grounded in a cultural context, I have been struggling in my research to operationalize "culture" for the fear of reducing it to some causal variable. I haven't found much solace in sociology's linear models that isolate "culture's" effects - as it repeats the whole divide of structure versus agency. Neither have I found much clarity in the interpretive tradition of culture, not because I don't agree with it, but because I just become confused at how to methodologically move forward with an interpretive approach. Well then came my meeting with Prof. Alladi Venkatesh, Assoc. Director of UC Irvine's Center for Research on Information Technology and Organizations (CRITO) (thanks for gloria mark for the introduction!)

Prof. Venkatesh has created methodology magic! Ethno-consumerism is a methodology for doing cross-cultural research. It encourages the researcher to "study culture not merely as providing the context for the study of consumer behavior but study consumption itself as culturally constituted behavior. "In principle, the ethnoconsumerist perspective goes beyond the distinction of emic and etic research approaches." The etic approach encourages the researcher to interpret from her/his point of view. On the other hand, the emic approach tells the researcher to look at the subject's point of view. But ethnoconsumerism advocates for the next critical step, which is to then develop knowledge from subject's point of view. "The research becomes more than an etic interpretation (researcher's point of view) of the culture, but a view of the culture informed by the culture itself as demonstrated by the above" (Venkatesh and Meamber, 1997).

Venkatesh makes clear that this is methodology, not a method. It does not seek to promote any data collection methods.

Of course I think that qualitative methods (or a mixed-method approach of qual + quant) is the best way to arrive at what he is saying is the crux of ethnoconsumerism - developing a cultural framework of analysis from the consumer's point of view.

I highly encourage you to read his 1995 paper below on Ethnoconsumerism (citation below). It's a beautifully written paper that feels intellectually and spiritually moving at the same time. When I read it I felt as if the words has fallen out of the sky onto self-organizing fractals of joy. After 3 years of sociology coursework, I've become averse at times to theories by sociologists because the words just don't stick in my brain or they just don't inspire me anymore. There was something this 1995 piece that helped me deconstruct 3 years of wonderful and hellish sociological self-discovery to even learn about the cultural divide within the field of sociology (culture vs structure or culture as interpretive model). Dr. Venkatesh, coming from a business/economics background, beautifully reconstructs all the various authors of the interpretive tradition who I have come to love. He has inspired me to think of these authors - such as Geertz, in a new way for my own work on new technology users.

I will be thinking about this methodology for a while as I try to figure out if this framework makes sense for my dissertation. So I will be writing more about this model. In the meantime, two things come to my mind: how I can apply this for my research and how this intersects with Stuart Halls, et. al. 1997 book on Sony Walkmans.

How do I apply this this my research?

study how new users use their technology as culturally constituted behavior.

Do not treat new tech users as objects.

Do not treat their practices as economically motivated.

People use techology to get things done. It is my job to understand as an outsider what is being "done" in their context.

Don't be culturally reductive by picking one feature of the culture and anchoring all analysis around the feature.

If I want to compare two different regions with a cultural framework - this takes a realllllly long time because I have to understand the cultural categories and experiences of all the sites.

In 1997, Stuart Hall, Paul Du Gray, and Linda James published Doing cultural studies: the story of the Sony Walkman. They created a model for the analysis of cultural objects called the circuit of culture. On page 3, they show this graph below. The book walks one through on how to deconstruct the Sony walkman as a cultural object.

In an upcoming post, I would like to discuss ways I could combine Ethnoconsumerism and the Circuit of Culture to work for my research. What's interesting is that while both authors are talking about objects and the people who use the, these are two slightly different approaches. I want to think about to spatialize these approaches. I need to give this some more thought so until the next post on this!

Having a bit of fun with some Rollei Infrared Film that I have laying around. I made a bit of mistake with these, and either under-exposed or over-exposed the frames but of a roll of fifteen pulling out ten workable images isn't too bad!

Founded as the Toronto, Simcoe and Huron Railway in 1849 early financial troubles forced the company to recharter as the Ontario, Simcoe, & Huron Railroad in 1850. With a plan to construct a railway line from Toronto to Collingwood on Georgian Bay. Construction of the new line began on the 15th of October 1851. The first train, including the Locomotive Toronto, built by Toronto Locomotive Works, which was the first locomotive built in a British Colony steamed from Toronto to Machell's Corners on the 16th of May, 1853. It would reach Barrie that same year and finally Collingwood in 1855. More financial troubles would plaque O,S&H and in 1858 it again rechartered as Northern Railway Company of Canada. To help fund further expansion north, O,S&H merged with Hamilton and North-Western Railway in 1879 and reached North Bay and the Canadian Pacific Line by 1886. But it would only last two years with Grand Trunk buying them out in 1888. The former King City Station stands today as part of the King Heritage & Cultural Centre. The station was originally built in 1852 and was used until 1967. Originally slated to be part of Toronto's Black Creek Pioneer Village, local interest saw it moved to the King Heritage and Cultural Centre in 1989.

education, techology and internet concept - group of smiling students with computer monitor at school

Visit www.pluggd.in for more info!

Techology - supposedly the *information-enabler*, has instead created silos and made access to information all the more difficult !!

Infact, the more technology has evolved, the costlier is the access/implementation .

Here is to celebrate the open source community/movement ::

Floss (Free/Libre Open-Source Software) !

The thing is, everyone is trying to find ways to stop global warming through new technology.

Nothing wrong with this in itself, great, however it seems no-one is really speaking about the fundamental reasons global warming has come about.

We keep saying it has come about from burning too many fossil fuels, too many cows, too much carbon emission etc.

These are secondary causes, not first causes.

Very few people seem to be really addressing the reasons why we do these things in the first place.

We tend to take it as a given that we should do these things, and then try and find a better way to do them.

Thus the current mainstream attitude is still an effort to try and produce the same level of energy, the same level of consumer goods, yet somehow make all the technology ‘green’. We're still trying to have the cake and eat it too.

I have my doubts this can actually work, no matter how ingenious and devoted we are to the idea. The reason is this:

At the core level, the reason global warming has come about (not to mention other destructions of the earth) is because we are greedy and have produced an excessive amount of material goods, far beyond what we need for happiness and health.

It is easy to blame large corporations, however they can only exist if the individual supports them by buying their products, and we all demand the products of the large corporations, so as individuals we are all to blame.

No-one wants to hear this though because changing yourself seems too hard, we demand that governments enforce big business to change, we hope scientists will come up with new technologies.. and hope these things will solve everything whilst we keep acquiring.

The basic problem is what we have always been told through spiritual teachers down the ages... it is ego, which produces division and greed.

Ego has been at the core of all our wars, both personal and country. Ego demands, it wants to consume and enlarge itself. It does this on many levels; food, wealth, power, division, land acquisition, violence, ideas, identities. It does this on the personal level, and in group levels in everything from a football team to a national identity, any group where individuals gather part or all of their identity from the group.

There is a natural reason the ego has evolved, but we have barely examined it scientifically and dealt with the enormous range of problems it has produced in our societies.

If we change our technologies but don’t examine the very reasons we demand to acquire so much in the way of material possessions, we are not going to solve the problems, they will still be there in a new package. Or we will solve some problems as new ones grow, which is all we have ever done so far.

The reason that no-one is seriously speaking about the core reasons for global warming, is because deep down few people are prepared to actually change. We are scared of the planet dying and even governments are beginning to take small steps toward changing this situation, however we are only taking steps that involve keeping our current standard of acquisition and wealth. We keep speaking about economic impact, and never a word is said about spiritual impact, spiritual worth, or simply preserving beauty.

Governments still aren’t interested in beauty, only money. They will only change technology structures if there is money in it. Therefore nothing is really changing. The Australian government is STILL talking about 'sustainable development' which is one of the more transparently absurd philosophical ideas around. It doesnt take a huge intellect to realise that on a planet of limited size, development and acquisition cannot go on forever. Yet still almost no-one wants to stop!

So the change must begin at a very personal level, which is to try and understand why we demand so much personally, and does it truly bring happiness health and wisdom?

But few people want to seriously entertain the idea of having less, we are terrified of it in fact, because the entire structure of society has brought us up otherwise, the entire system is structured around economic wealth being the thing that holds us together. We are so brainwashed it has become nearly impossible to see another solution to finding happiness.

It is barely our fault however, we have been brainwashed relentlessly from the day we are born to look outward for happiness and satisfaction, never inward. It is this continual reaching outward to the material world that has produced our desire for so much, which is what is now causing the destruction of the ecosystem of an entire planet.

We need to address this first, or at least at the very same time that we are trying to make new technologies.

Hope you are well , I am fine too. We are thankful for all your support through lights that you have provided to Women who are part of Adult literacy classes. As I have received a call from Mr Shahid i am sharing the following information with you.

Women Empowerment groups were started in 2013 in all the PEP schools. The ideas was to provide awareness to women regarding their rights, responsibilities, savings, and issues such as early marriage. These women were provided training on building low cost washroom and they were also provided training on how to save their families during severe floods. At present PEP has 67 groups in total. Each group has a group of 10 females.

In 2016 , on the request of women, adult literacy course is introduced to the women. Project aimed at 5 centres in 2016 but 27 centre were started in 2016. they women were provide free books and no fee was charged from them. A mobilizer from the same village taught these classes.. They course is designed for one year as it is a weekly class.

In 2017 , PEP introduced a centre where women can learn from android tablets. PEP has designed three grade applications in Sindhi on tablets which are useful for these women. They can use those applications and hear sounds and can read the sentences and stories.

Now women are able to read and write sentences. Instead of thumb print they can write their names. They developed their confidence and able to perform theater on sensitive issues. Some of the theatre performances are uploaded on PEP website.

PEP is reaching out to the marginalized communities with a hope of educating them and making them effective citizen of our country.

PEP requested you to distribute these light as a token of thanks and as a resource for them so they can use it in the night too. They are thankful for all the encouragement that you have provided to them.

Please feel free to ask further information.

Music. It's a powerful thing. When there's a piece of music that really connects with you, which it tends to do in a really visceral way, and you play it to someone else and they say, "that's crap", it hurts. It hurts deep down.

I've always been in to music. There was a mixture of Jazz and Classical usually playing at home when I was a kid. My parents used to take me along to live jazz some weekends. From a young age I was fascinated by some of the technology of music - loudspeakers, tape recorders, microphones etc. I used to rip old reel-to-reel machines apart and play around with them (escaping, by some miracle, electrocution in the process) and used to build speaker cabinets out of scraps of wood. When my parents got an Aiwa "Music Centre" I inherited their old music system, a Mullard mono Valve amp, Valve tuner and massive speaker cabinet. The speaker cabinet got butchered eventually and I did various terrible things to the valve amp. And in my formative years I was really into music involving synthesisers. Many people are passionate about lyrics. Not me. I used to love getting lost in the world of soundscapes created by machines. I absolutely loved the textures that synths could create, the sweep of an analogue filter, the deep and fat bass notes, shimmering string sounds. I Ioved the names of synths - Moog, ARP Odyssey, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5. I guess I was hugely unfashionable. When others were into punk I was into Jean Michel Jarre. Oh well. You are who you are.

So anyway, moving forwards 30 years or so, I was searching for a piece of music on iTunes and my eye fell upon Jon and Vangelis. Jon and Vangelis. The names rattled around the darker recesses of my brain for a few moments. And I recalled a track called, "I hear you now". It was around during the aforementioned formative years and was a favourite of mine. So I downloaded and played it. Straight away I was taken back to about 1980 and hearing the song playing in some room at secondary school. Although I hated school for the most part, hearing this song took me back to that time, but back to a happier part of childhood - being lost in those wonderful soundscapes once again. And I still think it's a cracking tune.

And a cracking tune deserves better than a shitty pair of multimedia speakers. So I had a rummage around my sound equipment cupboard and dug out a power amp and these Tannoy speakers (those childhood habits of collecting sound equipment haven't gone away) and hooked them up. AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Let the music breathe!

I'm goin' oldschool.

A year ago I replaced all of my incandescent light bulbs with trendy, "energy saving" compact fluorescent bulbs. Figured I'd jump on the consumer bandwagon, save some money and help the environment.

Wrong.

Six months ago I picked up a new 5.8Ghz cordless phone. After all, it is better than my corded phone and has "exceptional quality and reception".

Wrong again.

I also use a cell phone, like most of the world nowadays. Yeah, we've all heard that cell phones are bad for your brain cells but that hasn't made any of us stop using them. At least now with cell phone texting the phone stays farther away from our head most of the time.

Environmental responsibility, energy savings and convenience. Three things that are saving the planet and killing the people who live on it.

Welcome, once again, to the power and persuasion of our media, consumer driven, world.

Recently is was discovered that dirty electricity is making people sick. Poisoning them even. "Energy saving" compact fluorescent bulbs were tested and found to be producing high levels of radio frequency radiation.

50% of the total population are expected to be electrosensitive by year 2017.

In socialized Canada they will eventually force us to stop using incandescent bulbs. In the meantime you can buy three 60W incandescents for $.58 at Walmart. The "energy saving" compact fluorescent bulbs will cost you 20 times that amount. Twenty times. LOADS of savings.

On a recent television news report they interviewed two people that were sick and experiencing arthritic symptoms. They discovered that their new "energy saving" compact fluorescent bulbs were to blame. After replacing their new bulbs with oldschool incandescent ones they were feeling better within two days.

Pharmaceutical companies MUST be manufacturing these new bulbs. And maybe cordless phones too?

DECT (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Technology) has been incorporated into many new cordless phones (and some models of baby monitors) by manufacturers such as Panasonic, GE, Motorola and V-Tech. These phones have become very popular in the last few years because they are very powerful providing clearer reception. If you've purchased a new 2.4 GHz or 5.8 Ghz cordless phone recently you may very well own a phone that uses new high-powered DECT technology. DECT technology is "always on" and produce a very strong radiation field, similar to that of a cell phone tower -- even when not in use and just sitting idle in the cradle.

Baby monitors even. BABY MONITORS!

Oldschool.

I struggled all winter with aches, pains and depression. Last week I went to Walmart and picked up some incandescent bulbs to replace my "energy saving" compact fluorescent bulbs. I can't tell you how much better I have felt (physically) since then.

I also visited Value Village yesterday to pick up an oldschool corded phone. Works wonderfully. If you are interested in a high-powered 5.8 Ghz cordless phone I have one for sale.

And, oh yeah. I'll keep my cell phone, for now. But only because it has a loudspeaker option that allows me to make calls without putting the phone near my brain.

I got a new camera 'cause I'm visiting Europe soon. The bookshelves seemed like a handy enough thing for taking test shots of so I could see the resolution.

Most of the book titles are legible!

Modern techology, folks... it's incredible. This thing is about the size of a cigarette box. When photography started, you'd have to climb into a shielded area ignite flash powder. It was such a pain, we did it for war dead (since they were good at staying still) and rich people (since they could afford the flash powder).

Now I can just swan about the apartment and snap photos of cats that no one cares about, and books on shelves, as if that were remarkable, that books should be on shelves.

I dunno. It passes the time. One day, I will be dead and all these books will be gone and LONG before that, probably, the power will go out and this electronic age will be lost like we were writing our history on walls using flashlights and shadows, or like we were recording our lives with sticks on the surface of a body of water.

So why not take pictures of cats and books.

I guess that's my question. And since no answer is expected, the question isn't even punctuated as a question.

What do you think about that.
