Prisoners of techology...the smartphone world...

Coming strong out of the gate with the first roll. I'll admit these were not the results I had been expecting. I expected a lot more contrast and plenty of grain. But I think Silberra has a winner with this stock, sharp, fine-grained, and perfect contrast. I can't wait to see what the rest of the developers can do with this film!

A note for my viewers, these rolls of film were purchased before the brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. After careful investigation and communication, I have found no connection between the people behind Silberra and those connected to the Russian President. Glory to Ukraine and prayers for the defenders and peace!

I initially thought to use Microphen, but then realising that I'm working with a slow film, maybe a developer better suited for that would be best. That settled me on Perceptol instead; of course, there was then the thought to over-expose and pull in development. Thankfully I didn't go that route and shot the film at ASA-50, and I'm glad I did; the results were clean, good contrast, tonal separation and super sharp. Certainly a winning combination.

An iconic camera from the days of the German Economic Miracle and one that is well familiar to fans of the Film Photography Podcast. I mean who can't forget that soundbite? The Clack is a fantastic example of a mid-century box camera with big 6x9 negatives, easy to use and orientation in landscape not portrait. Plus a decent single-element lens makes this a solid performer.

Having a bit of fun with some Rollei Infrared Film that I have laying around. I made a bit of mistake with these, and either under-exposed or over-exposed the frames but of a roll of fifteen pulling out ten workable images isn't too bad!

And the hits keep coming; while this roll certainly has a lot more contrast than the last one, I'm not complaining. The images remain sharp and fine-grained, and while there is a certain loss of the mid-tones, the results are a much crunchier image which on a lower contrast day when I was shooting is appreciated.

The largest Pre-Confederation Railroad to survive into the 20th Century. Chartered in 1852 to build a rail link between Toronto and Montreal took a different approach and would be the third rail operator to begin operations in 1854. They would begin to expand before their main line would be completed, extending out past Montreal in 1853 to Vermont and out to Sarnia in 1856. It proved to be the main competitor to Great Western. It also purchased the small Buffalo & Lake Huron Railroad in 1856 with it's line running between Fort Erie and Goderich granting access to the Second Welland Canal in addition to both the Buffalo and Chicago markets. It would go on to buy out both Great Western (1882) and Northern Railway Company of Canada (1888). However it would fall and be purchased by Canadian National in 1923. The Napanee VIA station is the perfect example of a typical limestone GT station built in 1856.

Ilford Ortho Plus has been around for a while now, it's just only been in sheet film format, at least until 2019 when the fine folks at Ilford released this beautiful film in roll formats. Oddly enough it never hit my radar for reviews until that point having only shot a single sheet. This is an awesome film that I can't wait to see what it can do again!

This is the mundane waterfront of the westernmost of the seven East Frisian Islands of Germany, Borkum. It is located due north of the Dutch province of Groningen. For almost two centuries it has been loved as a tourist destination. And in the German way it has many spas and health centres., and the beach sporks an FKK-strand. In many ways it is a worldly place as compared to the beautiful Dutch island Schiermonnikoog which is due West. But both boast a similar natural world, and there are national land and marine parks and natural reserves.

Borkum has a checkered history ranging from piracy in the Hanseatic Middle Ages to the more horrific aspects of the Second World War. Long before that war it was rabidly anti-semitic and Jews were 'encouraged' to stay away. Moreover, it was here that Wernher von Braun perfected his missile techology (which was to bring such havoc to British cities in the War). In late 1934 he fired off two missiles - called 'Max' and 'Moritz' - which were the first to reach an altitude of 2 kilometers. Thus he put down the foundation for modern missile and space technology.

These are all things of the past, thank goodness. Today Borkum is a holiday island, much loved for its good air, pleasant natural surroundings, and not least the ferrryride to get there.

This is part of the waterfront with some of the older late-nineteenth and twentieth century facades. The 'New' lighthouse in the centre was built in 1879 just after the old one had burnt down. Another, smaller lighthouse is the first electrical one of Germany's coast.

The beach chairs are typical for Borkum; called 'Strandkorb' (=Beachbasket), they protect against the often fierce winds; there's enough room for two, or even a small, thinner family of four! the small rental fee is more than value for money.

This photo was taken as evening fell on a slight ly overcast day; from west to east.

I spoke at PhotoPlus Expo 2013 on the Sony stage each day of the Expo.

My presentation was titled: Mobile Photography: A World of Possibilities. I spoke about my own traditional client workflow and how I conceptualize the places I photograph as well as how I merge that with client expectations. And then I spoke about how I have been able to incorporate my love for mobile photography with my client workflow using the Sony QX100.

The panel I was on was titled: Disruptive Technology which covered photography and new media and included Rick Smolan: a former Time, Life, and National Geographic photographer, best known as the creator of the “Day in the Life” book series; Matt Kloskowski: the full-time Director of Education for Kelby Media Group and Editor-in-Chief of Lightroom Magazine; Brian Smith: a Pulitzer Prize winning celebrity portrait photographer; and Alex Garcia: whose time at the Chicago Tribune as a photographer has earned him many accolades and awards deeming him “one of the world’s best photojournalists” by HarperCollins.
