These ants carried this left over prawn legs from the bottom of the garbage pail. At this point they have lifted it from the bottom of the pail to the top of the pail. They will eventually take it about 15 feet up the tree to their nest. It takes real teamwork to pull this off!

Talking with people.The old UNICEF staff hark back to when Jim Grant was the Executive Director. They tell tales of a world without internet and management software, when UNICEF’s job was to take the words of the people to the ear of the minister, when what counted was mud on your boots..I had one of those days Monday and it was wonderful. I went out to coach a team from our Kankan field office on how to monitor projects. We got to Niagassola at the end of the day. It is a small village in the far North East of the country. From the tarmac it was about a three hour drive along a track over dusty plains some chalk white others with the red grit of laterite. .After dark we settled down with men and women from the village. The weather was 23c, with a damp mist in the air. I have never felt such cold weather in Upper Guinea. So we huddled together around a fire. They told up about how the school and the health centre were working and what were their biggest concerns for themselves and their children. I got the feeling that people in Niagassola are not shy of telling us what they think, but there is something about talking in the dark at the end of the day that loosens up your tongue. There was a Griot, a story teller, a poet, in the group and he conjured up words from the fire to show us how things were. .We sat, listened and noted. We were with a couple of colleagues from the government who were from the regional administrative capital in Kankan. Both experienced, senior officials, it was a first for them, so they said, to sit down and hear what the people had on their minds.
The steel on the outside of this rebar cage is so thick and heavy that it has to be lifted into position by an overhead crane while steel workers secure the rebar in place.
During the next several months, crews working on the Salmon Creek Interchange Project will set several of these rebar cages into the ground to form the base of a new bridge at NE 139th Street.

Ladies making pots at the Thanh Ha Pottery Village. During the 16th and 17th Centuries this village was renowned for its earthenware and products, such as bricks, roof and floor tiles, which are featured in the old buildings of Hoi An.
While making her own pots one lady uses her foot to turn the potters wheel of the other potter :-)

MAINZ, Germany - Soldiers from U.S. Army Europe assist with the loading of rail cars during USAREUR’s Contingency Command Post (CCP) deployment operations for Saber Guardian 2014. The CCP, established as a rapidly deploying, forward command and control element in support of missions directed by USAREUR, is currently preparing for Saber Guardian 2014. The training, held in the Republic of Bulgaria, is a USAREUR-led multinational exercise designed to strengthen international government agencies and military partnering. The exercise will further strengthen interoperability between NATO and partner nations involved in foreign consequence management operations with U.S. forces and foster trust between regional partner military forces. Personnel from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Turkey and the U.S., as well as representatives from NATO, will participate in the exercise. A couple of competitors at the Canadian National Police Dog Championships... held here over the weekend. Most of the dogs had trouble with this jump... and their partners assisted in various ways.
Too bad the quality of the photo's so poor (taken from a significant distance). Still... I love the half man, half beast effect.
It was also really good to see (as German shepherd people) that even these highly-trained professional dogs aren't perfect in terms of their obedience, etc. Some of the best moments of the day involved dogs who repeatedly refused to go over or through things... and had the crowd in hysterics.

CPT John Bryant, from 172nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, plans scenarios with his Romanian counterpart, Capt Bogdan Nicolaescu from the 26th Infantry Battalion of the Romanian Land Forces, during Saber Guardian 2013, a U.S. European Command Black Sea regional exercise planned and executed by Romanian Land Forces and U.S. Army Europe. This is the first time these Black Sea regional countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Republic of Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine) have come together to train and exercise their battlestaff and command post procedures at one location. Serbian and Polish Land Forces are also participating to enhance their relationships with these Black Sea countries. There are more than 150 training audience members, support staff and contractors supporting the training at the Romanian Land Forces Combat Training Center in Cincu, Romania from 15-25 April.
