Japanese Cherry Blossom, Oriental and sensual, smells uptown and sophisticated!
Japanese cherry blossoms, mimosa flower petals, vanilla, Tonka bean, and oriental woods.
For the past 5 years, or when I started noticing the pair, these two pigeons nestled cosily on the branch of a tea tree on our neighbour's block. Through torrential rain, wild storms and murderous wind, the pair would sit snuggled together and ride it out.
So, decided to take a pic of them during a particularly blustery day.
Random editing done to make it look all the more moody and emotional and yarr.

Teatree Web Moth (Orthaga thyrisalis) caterpillars have been all over our Callistemon “Brogo Overflow” for months. After a storm blew in and pelted the shrub with heavy rain, it washed away many of the nests and drowned some of the caterpillars. They are a pest to plants like Leptospermum and Callistemon, so while it was an unfortunate event for the caterpillars, it was good for the plants. [Lower Blue Mountains, NSW]
Map location is guessed at but in the general area somewhere along the Frankston-Flinders Road near Shoreham.

NUMBER 47
Family : Myrtaceae
Melaleuca viridiflora is a tree to 20 metres high which grows in swampy areas in rainforest and open forest between Maryborough and the Torres Strait and generally across the top end into the Northern Territory, growing at altitudes as high as 980 metres.
Tolerates seasonally waterlogged soils and can occasionaly occur with red or pink flowers instead of the more common creamy-green variety.
Several varieties are recognised: var.attenuata, var.canescens and var.glabra. These differ from var.viridiflora in minor features of foliage and flowers.
I would appreciate any assistance from anyone in the Mission Beach area in identifying this species to the level of variation although that may entail inspection of the tree (NUMBER 47) in the Norm Byrnes Arboretum.
Photographed in the Norm Byrnes Arboretum - Mission Beach.

Common Stick insect
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Phasmatodea - walking sticks and leaf insects
Family: Phasmatidae
Scientific name: Clitarchus hookeri
Common name: Common stick insect, Smooth stick insect,
Stick insects are a group of plant-feeding insects characterised by a remarkable similarity to their host vegetation. Stick insects belong to the insect order Phasmatodea and are found throughout the world, being most common and diverse in the tropics.
Stick insects feed on vegetation and are usually active after dark. They can be found on a variety of native plants in addition to some introduced plants common in gardens. When disturbed, stick insects will often fall to the ground and 'play dead' for hours. Another bizarre behaviour is the 'dance', where the stick insect sways back and forwards for hours in a peculiar motion, the function of which is a mystery. Many stick insect species, including some New Zealand species, can reproduce without males, a mode of reproduction known as parthenogenesis. Stick insects are relatively common in New Zealand although introduced wasps and possums are a threat in some areas.
This common stick insect is a New Zealand native it is a very long insect, more than 75mm in length. It found in trees and shrubs, especially teatree and is well camouflaged. It feed on the leaves of manuka, kanuka and puhutukawa leaves Its smooth body can be bright green or light brown.

wow! not only is odin really pretty much almost probably just about standing and forcing us to batten Down The Hatches with his extreme interest in what's in the cupboards, but today we discovered that he's also getting tall enough to spy what might be on the edge of the last safe zone in the house - the top of the kitchen table.
of course, the vast expanse of unexplored space ( at least from this angle, he usually gets a good view of it from his highchair ) is all the more interesting because it requires one to stand precariously on one's tippy toes just to get a look at what hidden treasures might reveal themselves to just within reach, which is this case is a bottle of tea tree oil ( thankfully with it's cap securely tightened ).
we use tea tree oil like other households might use duct tape or maybe butter and it's currently being recruited in the The Great Butt Rash War.
i have no idea if it actually helps alleviate the symptoms, but hey, i guess it can't hurt. who knew the aussies had an academic tea tree research group?
