(Sept. 4, 2019) CAPE MAY — Come to the City of Cape May, one of “America’s Best Food Cities,” according to Condé Nast Traveler magazine, and experience the flavors of America’s First Seaside Resort during the 23rd Annual Cape May Food & Wine Celebration, Sept. 13 through Sept. 22, presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). This annual 10-day extravaganza celebrates Cape May’s gourmet restaurants, local wines and beers, and talented chefs with wonderful flavors to enjoy.
Spend the afternoon visiting Cape May County’s wineries and sampling the unique flavors of each during the Cape May Wine Trail on Fridays, Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Savor distinctive wines at three Cape May area vineyards with trolley travel to each and a delicious lunch included at the Carriage House Café & Tearoom at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. After lunch, a trolley transports you to Willow Creek Winery, Natali Vineyards and Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery. Learn about viniculture and ask questions as you sip and swirl at each tasting room. Admission of $85 includes lunch, wine tastings at each vineyard and a wine tasting glass. This is a limited event, so reserve early.
The Dinner & Full Moon Climb is the height of culinary and stargazing delight! A trolley transports you on Friday, Sept. 13 at 6:15 p.m. from the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., to The Red Store in Cape May Point, where you will savor selections from the tasting menu of award-winning Chef Lucas Manteca. Then it’s onwards via trolley to climb 199 steps to the Cape May Lighthouse watch gallery, weather permitting, to view the full moon in all its glory. Admission is $85. Reserve early; this is a limited event.
Enjoy craft beers at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., and celebrate South Jersey during Harvest Brew Fest, an all-day festival on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This all-day outdoor festival spotlights all things local! Enjoy local food vendors, local artisans and crafters, local craft beers and local musical talent, including Capers, Animal House, and Paul Garguilo. Taps flow beginning at 10 a.m. Free admission and parking is available. The Harvest Brew Fest is possible thanks to generous support from Paramount Air Service.
Spend a luxurious afternoon al fresco with winemaker Todd Wuerker at his family’s vineyard, and Kara catering during Grilling at the Vineyard on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Relax as they grill on the crushpad at Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery, 600 South Railroad Ave., Rio Grande. Savor some of Todd’s favorite wines. Enjoy culinary demonstration, stationary hors d’ouevres and a salad course. Graze on salmon, chicken, pork and beef as they come off the grill. Cash raw bar and cash wine bar. Admission is $65.
Ready for the crème de la crème? Chefs’ Dine-Arounds are unforgettable five-course gourmet feasts and a chance to taste culinary delights from some of the best chefs in Cape May. Five premier Cape May restaurants each serve a course paired with a different wine from the evening’s sponsoring winery. A winery representative accompanies the group and explores the subtleties of the pairing with each dish. A trolley shuttle transports you between courses. Reserve early for these very special evenings; limited to 34 people per night. Chefs Dine-Arounds are offered on Sunday, Sept. 15, Monday, Sept. 16 and Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Admission is $125 (gratuity included).
Work up an appetite during the Gourmet Brunch Walk Monday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. Stroll through a portion of Cape May’s Historic District on this guided walking tour ending at the famous Mad Batter restaurant. Enjoy a gourmet brunch in New Jersey Monthly’s choice for “best brunch and lunch” spot. Reserve early; limited to 40. Admission is $25 adults; $15 children (ages 3-12).

Enjoy lunch at one of the eastern seaboard’s most iconic seafood restaurants, The Lobster House, 905 Schellengers Landing Road, with a fascinating tour of Fisherman’s Wharf included, during Fisherman’s Wharf Tour & Lunch, offered Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Thursday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. Cape May is the largest commercial fishing port in New Jersey and one of the largest in the nation. You’ll learn how seafood gets from the Atlantic Ocean to your dining table. After your guided tour, enjoy a Lobster House lunch of clam chowder, with a lobster salad or chicken sandwich, French fries and coleslaw. Admission is $30.

Experience West Cape May's veggie-centric healthy dining spot, during the Good Earth Organic Eatery: Italian Vegan event, offered Tuesday, Sept. 17, with 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. seatings. Good Earth Organic Eatery, 600 Park Blvd., offers a 4-course Italian vegan dinner, including soup, salad, entrée and dessert, accompanied by a lecture on "Healthy Eating in the Modern Era." Touching on curative foods, methods of preparation and ways to avoid the toxins of our times, the owners will share their passion for "food as medicine." Noted in 2018 as a "Hidden Gem of the Jersey Shore" by food critic Craig LaBan. Beverages available at additional cost. Admission is $50 (gratuity included).

Board a MAC trolley at the Emlen Physick Estate for the Cape May Airport & Culinary Tour Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. and visit this vibrant area for a self-guided tour of Naval Air Station Wildwood museum and its amazing collection of painstakingly restored aircraft, along with a visit to the Cape May Peanut Butter and Cape May Olive Oil Company for delicious samplings. Learn how to choose the perfect olive oil for your particular taste. Discover more local culinary favorites with a $10 gift certificate to the Taco Shop and a $10 gift certificate to Cape May Brewing Co. Admission is $45.
New in 2019! Mudhen Brewing Co. is named after the first passenger train in 1883 that chugged precariously across the marshlands into Wildwood, carrying passengers from Cape May Court House to Anglesea. Recently opened in 2018, this brewery is one of the region’s newest destinations. Discover its flavors during the Small Bites & Flights Pairing Dinner with Mudhen Brewery, on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. Guests will receive a tour of the brewery as well as their Flagship Flight (four 5-oz. tasters) paired with two small bites of the chef’s choice, and a Brewers Choice Flight (four 5-oz. tasters) paired with two small bites of the chef’s choice. Admission is $50.
Have you ever tried blending wines? Vintners create and bring to market new blends all the time. During Wine Blending & Pairing at Cape May Winery, on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m., you will learn the refined art of choosing the best wines to blend during this two-hour tasting and blending experience, with light plates and dessert included, at Cape May Winery, 711 Townbank Road. Admission is $75.
Take a guided tour of Fisherman’s Wharf Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. at the renowned Lobster House, one of the area’s most recognized landmarks, and learn how seafood gets from the Atlantic Ocean to your dining table. During the Fisherman’s Wharf Tour, you will see some of the largest vessels fishing on the East Coast that are home-ported in Cape May. Admission is $10 adults; $7 children (ages 3-12).
Chocolate lovers unite! Savor an amazing buffet of fabulous chocolate desserts during the Chocolate Lovers Feast at the Washington Inn on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. Your server will also suggest wonderful pairings of wine with your chocolate. It’s all at one of Cape May’s most renowned restaurants, The Washington Inn, 801 Washington St. Admission is $40.

Join owner Stephen White at Seaside Cheese, 110 Park Blvd., West Cape May during Flights of Cheese: Cheeses from Around the World, and sample cheeses originating in a variety of cultures and traditions. Learn about the special characteristics of each. Includes soup, salad and dessert! Offered Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Admission is $25.
Experience one of America’s great traditions, the jazz brunch, in Cape May during Champagne Jazz Brunch at Aleathea’s! Linger over a delicious Sunday morning champagne brunch buffet at Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St., and enjoy jazz standards from The Great American Songbook, featuring Mary Lou Newnam, saxophone, clarinet and flute, and Sonny Troy, guitar. In 1898 a Spanish artillery captain, Emilio de la Cuadra, started electric automobile production in Barcelona under the name of La Cuadra. In Paris, De la Cuadra met the talented Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt (lived 1878–1953) and hired him to work for the company in Spain. La Cuadra built their first gas-powered engines from Birkigt designs. At some point in 1902, the ownership changed hands to J. Castro and became Fábrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles (Spanish-Swiss Car Factory) but this company went bankrupt in December 1903.
Yet another restructuring took place in 1904, creating La Hispano-Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles also under Castro' s direction. Four new engines were introduced in the next year and a half. 3.8 litre and 7.4 litre four-cylinder and a pair of big six-cylinder engines were produced. This company managed to avoid bankruptcy and in Spain remained in operation, as a car, truck and aviation engine producer, with its main plant located in Barcelona, until 1946. They mass-produced cars, trucks and buses and a number of hand-built racing and luxury cars, some owned by King Alfonso XIII of Spain.
By this time in the early twentieth France was proving to be a much larger market for their luxury cars than Spain. In 1911 a new factory, known as Hispano France, was set up in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret. In 1914, they moved to larger factories at Bois-Colombes and took the name Hispano-Suiza.
At the first motor show after the end of the First World War, the 1919 Paris Auto Salon, Marc Birkigt launched a new luxury model, the H6. For many years the six cylinder Hispano Suiza's refinement and built quality remained unmatched.In the War, Hispano Suiza had supplied over 50,000 V12 fighter plane engines. For his new top of the line model, Birkigt first intended to use a version of the well proven V12. After some tests he concluded that one bank of a V12 would be more than sufficient to propel the new car. The 'six' displaced just over 6.5 litres and featured a single overhead camshaft. Each 35 lb crankshaft was machined from a 600 lb billet, resulting in a very rigid crankshaft. This was typical for Birkigt's 'no cost spared' perfectionism. After World War I Hispano-Suiza returned to automobile engine design and, in 1919, introduced the H6, earning them a reputation even greater than that of Rolls-Royce in England. Indeed, Rolls-Royce featured many Hispano-Suiza patented features, under licence. Most notably, Rolls-Royce used for many years the famed Hispano-Suiza power brakes, reputedly the best in the world, which used the torque generated by a drum brake mounted on the transmission shaft to power those on the wheels.
For the block and head aluminium was used, to keep the weight of the engine down. In the block a six separate steel sleeves formed the cylinders. Ignition was through two coils, with two plugs per cylinder, one on each side of the engine. The overhead camshaft was shaft driven and operated the valves, which were set vertical in the block. This was unconventional setup, which could result in tremendous damage, if a valve dropped in the cylinder. Birkigt was confident in using it, as the valves had never failed on the V12 airplane engines.Finished in black enamel and polished aluminium, the engine was mounted in a conventional ladder frame. It was suspended by a live axle and semi-elliptic leaf springs all-round. The four drum brakes were power assisted by a patented 'servobrake' system. The ingenious system used the car's momentum to slow it down. The brake assistance system took the power from the gearbox, which drove a shaft at 1/64 the speed of the engine. If all else failed, the rear brakes could be activated using a hand lever.Built in Paris and later in the Czech Republic as well, the H6 offered luxury, speed and refinement. Many of Hispano Suiza's European competitors like Rolls Royce, Bentley and Isotta Fraschini offered one or two of these ingredients, but not until the late 1920s did another manufacturer come up to par with the H6. This complete package did not come cheaply and for a while the H6 was the most expensive European car available. In 1922 the slightly more powerful H6B replaced the H6 and in 1924 the 8-litre H6C was added to the line-up.Hispano Suiza delivered the H6 as a rolling chassis for coach builders to body. To match the car's remarkable abilities, only the finest coach builders were commissioned to design and fit bodies on the H6 chassis. A vast majority of the chassis were fitted luxurious coachwork. The featured example is one of the most famous exceptions. Built to the order of one of of Hispano Suiza's biggest clients, Andre Dubonnet, the unique coachwork was built by Nieuport, a French aviation company.Dubonnet, the heir to an aperitif and cognac fortune, was an accomplished pilot and racing driver and needed a new car for the 1924 edition of the Targa Florio. He understood that weight and wind resistance were his biggest adversaries, which is why he turned to Nieuport. They crafted and exceptionally light tulip wood body, which was riveted together by thousands of brass rivets. Despite its huge size, the body weighed a mere 160 pounds. It was fitted on a special H6C chassis, which used a lower than standard radiator and sported a 46 gallon gas tank. There were only two examples fitted with this 'competition' radiator.

Born August 8, 1966
These paintings express a personal need to delineate images and fantasies abundant with
color and emotional explosion. Signs, lines and the materials appear of their own volition
and develop as an external language bridging the eye, the hand and the painted surface.
During the making of a painting the power of the shapes emanate from an unconscious
and concealed inner dimension.
Line by line, painting after painting while repeating shapes and patterns, a creation
evolves into new shapes and patterns. With a determination that reaches obsession, Mirit
Ben-Nun keeps on returning to her art of meticulous decoration. A strong presence of
primitive ornamentation provides the artwork with a tribal facet on one hand and a
feminine touch on the other, encompassing embroidery, bead threading and weaving
among others. Ben- Nun’s beautifying urge carries within it an archetypal strata, mythic
at times, which empowers her authentic expression.

BTW - I did a program for an elementary school (K-5) last week as a part of their program of "Everyone's An Artist." Lots of fun and each kid had to endure a 20 minute talk/slideshow that I gave on the history of photography and then take one photo of a scene that was set up with stuffed animals and flowers. The best of each class (as voted by the students) were selected and I was asked to pick the best of the best. It was hard to chose, but the best (IMHO) turned out to be taken by a child in Kindergarten! Creative, well-composed and interesting.
I can't wait to see how she turns out. I hope to have a link to the story in the newspaper in a few days.

The first Chinese-American movie star, Anna May Wong, a highly regarded and talented actress, had a series of major roles in successful films through the 1920s and 1930s. Unfortunately, these parts slowly dwindled during the 1940s due to racism and the "Yellow Peril" Americans felt during the war with Japan. She stars here in the lead role, as Lan Ying Lin, in this suspenseful crime drama directed by Robert Florey. Lin is hunting down her father's killers and aiding FBI agent Kim Lee (Philip Ahn) in an investigation into human traffickers played by J. Carrol Naish and Larry "Buster" Crabbe.
FIRST ASIAN AMERICAN STAR!

Her complexion was described as "a rose blushing through old ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American. The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name. She was Anna May Wong, nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough, on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January 1905, above her father's laundry. Anna May Wong's contribution to show business is a unique one; she was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving that stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. With determination and talent allied to her exotic beauty, she remained the only Asian female star throughout her forty-year career, never fully overcoming all prejudices in maintaining that position. Perhaps the rediscovery of her art will elevate her star to the pantheon of great performers and serve as a guiding light to Asian performers who still struggle to find their rightful place. Anna May Wong's life and career is something that is important for all who value greatly the Asian / Asian Pacific American communities' many artists and what we can all contribute!

Part II of Richard Corliss' tribute to the pioneer Chinese-American star.
Daughter of the Dragon. Paramount 1931.
Based on a Fu Manchu novel by Sax Rohmer.
Daughter of the Dragon extended the curse sworn by Dr. Fu on the Petrie family to the next generation. Fu Manchu (Warner Oland), long ago injured and exiled in an attempt on Petrie Sr., returns to London and confronts the father: "In the 20 years I have fought to live," he says in his florid maleficence, "the thought of killing you and your son has been my dearest nurse." He kills the father, is mortally wounded himself and, on his deathbed, reveals his identity to his daughter Ling Moy (Wong) and elicits her vow that she will "cancel the debt" to the Fu family honor and murder the son, Ronald (Bramwell Fletcher)... who, dash it all, is madly infatuated with Ling Moy. Ronald has seen "Princess Ling Moy Celebrated Oriental Dancer" perform, and the vision has made him woozy. "I wish I could find a word to describe her," this calf-man effuses. "Exotic that's the word! And she's intriguing, if you know what I mean." In a near-clinch, Ling Moy wonders if a Chinese woman can appeal to a British toff. When he begs her to "chuck everything and stay," she asks him, "If I stayed, would my hair ever become golden curls, and my skin ivory, like Ronald's?" But the lure of the exotic is hard to shake. "Strange," he says, "I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes." They almost kiss ... when an off-camera scream shakes him out of his dream. It is from his girlfriend Joan (Frances Dade), and the societal message is as clear and shrill: white woman alerting white man to treachery of yellow woman. Ling Moy, a nice girl, previously unaware of her lineage, might be expected to struggle, at least briefly, with the shock of her identity and the dreadful deed her father obliges her to perform. But Wong makes an instant transformation, hissing, "The blood is mine. The hatred is mine. The vengeance shall be mine." Just before his death, Fu mourns that he has no son to kill Ronald. But, in a good full-throated reading, Wong vows: "Father, father, I will be your son. I will be your son!" The audience then has the fun of watching her stoke Ronald's ardor while plotting his death. When she is with him, pleading and salesmanship radiate from her bigeyes. But when an ally asks her why she keeps encouraging the lad, she sneers and says, "I am giving him a beautiful illusion. Which I shall crush." As a villainess, she is just getting started. Revealing her mission to Ronald, she tells him she plans to kill Joan "Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die." (The ripe dialogue is by Hollywood neophyte Sidney Buchman, whose distinguished list of credits would include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Here Comes Mr Jordan and The Talk of the Town.) She soon ascends on a geyser of madness as she decides on a new torture: "My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid." An aide holds a hose gadget over Joan's soon-to-be-corroded face, and Ronald cries for Ling Moy to stop. Very well she says. "Ling Moy is merciful." She barks at Ronald: "Kill her!" He must decide if his favorite white girl is to be etched with acid or stabbed to death. Great stuff! Melodrama is the art of knowing how precisely too far to goThe film is a triangle: not so much of Ling Moy, Ronald and Joan as of Ling Moy, Ronald and a Chinese detective, Ah Kee, played by Sessue Hayakawa, the Japanese actor who in the teens was Hollywood's first Asian male star. He's not plausibly Chinese here, and he is in a constant, losing battle with spoken English. But he is a part of movie history, in the only studio film of the Golden Age to star two ethnically Asian actors. And he gives his emotive all to such lines as "It is the triumph of irony that the only woman I have ever deeply loved should be born of the blood that I loathe." And in the inevitable double-death finale neither the villainess nor the noble detective can survive the machinations of Hollywood justice he gently caresses the long hair of the lady he would love to have loved. "Flower Ling Moy," he says, a moment before expiring. "A flower need not love, but only be loved. As Ah Kee loved you."
The Personal Anna May Wong
This 5'7 beauty loved to study and could speak in an English accent, as well as being fluent in German and French with more than a passing knowledge of other tongues including Italian and Yiddish. For exercise she rode horses, played golf, and tennis. She liked to cook and regaled her guests with succulent Chinese dishes at frequent dinner parties. She preferred casual clothes, wearing slacks and sweaters at home, but cultivated an oriental motif in her very smart formal wardrobe. She studied singing with Welsh tenor Parry Jones before she participated in the film Limehouse Blues as George Raft's mistress. Anna loved to dance to contemporary music. Anna was quoted as saying, "I think I got my first chance because they thought I was peculiar. But, now I like to believe that the public are fond of me because they think I'm nice."
The story of Anna May Wong’s life traced the arc of triumph and tragedy that marked so many of her films. Wong's youthful ambition and screen appeal got her farther than anyone else of her race. But her race, or rather Hollywood's and America's fear of giving Chinese and other non-whites the same chance as European Americans, kept her from reaching the Golden Mountaintop. We can be startled and impressed by the success she, alone, attained. And still weask: Who knows what Anna May Wong could have been allowed to achieve if she
had been Anna May White?
Anna May Wong passed away on Feb. 3rd 1961 she was 56 years old.

Vodafone has launched the world’s largest recruitment programme to bring talented women in 26 countries back into the workplace after a career break. The leading global initiative, ReConnect, will increase the number of women in management roles, with around 10% of all Vodafone external management hires recruited through programme over next three years.
The Vodafone ReConnect programme is designed to attract talented women who have left the workplace for several years (in most cases to raise a family) who would like to return to work on a full-time or flexible basis but are struggling to make the professional connections needed or refresh the skills required. The programme will operate across 26 countries* - with a target of 1,000 ReConnect recruits within three years - and will complement other Vodafone global initiatives focused on encouraging and supporting women in the workplace including the Group’s groundbreaking global maternity policy** announced in March 2015.
