Last year, my friend and extraordinarily talented artist, Caryn Drexl, brought the Februllage challenge to my attention.
I didn't manage to start the 2024 project on time. Then things were hectic with sittings.
This year, I have two sittings booked from 7-23 February with just two nights at home between them on 11-12 February, so it may be foolhardy for me even to consider doing this (let alone to participate in the 100 Days Project, which is due to start on 23 February, though I'm also considering participating in that).
But I thought I would at least try.
From their Instagram: Februllage is a collaboration between Edinburgh Collage Collective and the Scandinavian Collage Museum. This initiative invites collage artists to make a 'collage a day' throughout February using our OFFICIAL WORD PROMPT CALENDAR ā 2025.
I'm a day late finishing and sharing my collage for day one, which has the theme 'trees'. Although I haven't yet slept, so it's unofficially still the same day I started it.
I used a wood engraving of a Queensland bottle tree from the Nouveau dictionnaire encyclopƩdique universel illustrƩ created under the direction of Jules Trousset and a circular tailpiece by an unknown artist from Histoire de l'ornementation des manuscrits to create my collage.
I gave the tailpiece a blue tint to help it stand out from the trees.
I looked for the indigenous name for the Brachychiton rupestris. While there's indication that any tree of the genus Brachychiton is a Kurrajong, the Brachychiton populneus, in particular, is most commonly known by that name.
Ultimately, though, I chose to go with the title 'bottle top' for the collage as when I overlaid the circular tailpiece onto the trunk of the tree (ironically, partially obscuring the most distinctive part of the tree), it reminded me of the ornate design you often see on the top of a wine bottle cap, or imprinted into the cork or the foil covering the cork (if you're old school or buying fancy wine).
I'll post these publicly on my Patreon, on my blog and here on social media on the same day, presuming I don't manage to edit and share them before the day's theme they correspond to ("today's" attempt would indicate I won't). But I'll continue to share as much other work as I can early access for patrons alongside the project (or instead, if I can't keep up the momentum with Februllage).
I'm hoping I may be able to create some of the collages more traditionally, especially while I'm sitting Frank, where I'll be close to home and access to the magazines I've kept to create collages, and with a large dining table at my disposal at which to assemble them.
My new home is 'overstuffed', my technological tools occupy my desk, and I only have a hospital-style over-bed table to work on (it's also my dinner table).
Perhaps you'll consider joining me in creating collages using the Februllage prompts. I'd love to see them!

Esibiscono le prove all'opinione pubblica e passano al contrattacco. Inutili le smentite del Presidente americano. Non vengono prese in considerazione. Il 23 aprile alle 00:59, ora di Beijing, parte il primo missile punitivo verso Manhattan. In seguito a numerosi avvertimenti, spiegano gli ufficiali cinesi.
Putin si allinea alla posizione orientale. Gli americani, questa volta, hanno esagerato ad immischiarsi nelle faccende della Cina. Il Taiwan non si tocca. I russi chiudono i rubinetti del gas che alimentano l'Europa, in modo da togliere a Washington possibili alleati. Il petrolio, giĆ scarso, sta per finire. I governi europei lo vengono a sapere in una fumosa assemblea notturna a Bruxelles.
Sta per arrivare l'Apocalisse. Stiamo andando incontro al Blackout. Come comunicarlo ai cittadini?

Il governo Berlusconi-Veltroni chiama alle armi eserciti di mercenari che prendono controllo delle poche riserve di petrolio dell'Italia. Quando arriverĆ il blackout bisogna essere preparati.
La squadra di consulenti presidenziali consiglia una diversione. Anzi due. Uno scandalo nazionale che narcotizzi l'attenzione: l'assassinio di un personaggio famoso. Mina, suggeriscono. E una seconda diversione, che consegni l'Italia in mano ai mercenari: una serie di attentati indifferenziati. Si penserĆ subito ad attacchi terroristici. Senza la comunicazione, bisogna affidarsi al passaparola.
A Bologna, dal Pilastro a Piazza Nettuno, la gente si gode la serata di caldo primaverile. Il cielo ĆØ sereno e trasparente. Si respira un'aria leggera e ormai si puĆ² lasciare la giacca pesante a casa. Si spengono i termosifoni. Piazza Santo Stefano si ripopola di studenti rumorosi.
Ć venerdƬ sera e le famiglie cenano guardando il telegiornale serale, quando improvvisamente salta la luce.
Ognuno constata sorpreso di non essere l'unico sfortunato. Succede la stessa cosa anche al vicino.
In via Indipendenza le macchine frenano bruscamente, spaventate dal buio inaspettato. Clacson infastiditi stridono ripetutamente.
In via Marconi,16, una signora che torna a casa dopo un giorno di lavoro resta bloccata nell'ascensore.
Alla stazione, un milanese appena salito sull'Eurostar delle 8 per casa pensa alla sua bambina, dopo che il buio provoca urla di paura che invadono tutti i binari.
In una piscina del Pilastro, appena le luci calano, un'istruttrice di nuoto teme il peggio per i suoi allievi che imparano a nuotare.
Un condomino anziano di Via del Pratello tenta arrabbiato di contattare l'Enel, ma il suo cellulare gli illumina il viso con una scritta prepotente: āno reteā.
Le prime esplosioni fanno crollare porta Saragozza, il ponte Stalingrado e numerose vetrine di via Indipendenza. L'impatto destabilizza le torri che si dondolano indecise se cadere.
La gente raccolta dal Blackout si sparpaglia come gocce di mercurio, facendo lo slalom tra le macchine e allontanandosi dai fulcri delle esplosioni. I palazzi di via Indipendenza tremano come ad un terremoto e chi prima si ĆØ rifugiato sotto i portici adesso cerca il cielo aperto. I vicoli stretti si fanno ancor piĆ¹ stretti e mattoni piovono dal cielo. Dove prima la luna gettava qualche raggio, adesso troneggia il fumo denso degli edifici polverizzati. Calpestare le rovine e scappare! Dovunque, lontani dal disastro. I terroristi vorranno colpire solo il centro...

Broken Top is an extinct, glacially eroded stratovolcano in Oregon, part of the extensive Cascade Range. Located south of the Three Sisters peaks, the volcano, residing within the Three Sisters Wilderness, is 20 miles west of Bend, Oregon in Deschutes County. Eruptive activity stopped roughly 100,000 years ago, and currently, erosion by glaciers has reduced the volcano's cone to where its contents are exposed. Bend and Crook Glaciers are the two named glaciers on the peak. Elevation 9,175 feet.
