This is a vast and elaborate Temple built entirely out of wood with no nails being used in the construction. It was the incredible idea of a man called Lek Viriyaphant who also had the idea for The Erawan Museum in Samut Prakan, and the Ancient City ( Muang Boran ) also at Samut Prakan. Lek Viriyaphant was born in 1914 and was a Thai multi millionaire businessman. He owned a Mercedes dealership in Bangkok. Through great wisdom his aim was to leave a legacy that would be remembered long after his death. Having been interested in art since his childhood, he was inspired to begin the Ancient City.
Initially, he intended to build a Thai map shaped golf course where miniatures of important national ancient sites were placed on certain spots within the grounds. The Sanphet Prasat Palace is regarded as the masterpiece of Muang Boran to give it its Thai name or, now called the Ancient City. It has even been called Ancient Siam in the past. There are only a few remains left of the throne hall and only the ruins of its building in Ayutthaya has been found. However, Lek, with his strong will and determination, engaged in research and used his imagination and wealth to create a miniature one, which as a result, formed a turning point that makes the Ancient City completely free from being simply a miniature city but an original in every sense.
As a dedicated man, Lek started doing research on the establishment of the Ancient City by himself. He then found that many of the ancient sites have been left in decay and ruin. Thus he changed the concept of the Ancient City from being a tourist attraction and in fact a Golf Course to an open air museum for educational purposes, which then became a huge undertaking as you see today. All the buildings housed in this open arena and proudly on display as he wanted, for all to see and enjoy. Sadly Lek died on November 17th 2000, but his work still carries onto this day.
The Sanctuary of Truth standing on the sea shore at Naklua headland is a wonderful and fitting tribute to this marvellous man. I visited this Temple on the 8th July 2011 having hired a taxi from Pattaya Second road. Arriving in about 15 minutes at the car park of this temple. I had seen The Ancient City many times and this will be covered in a future book on Samut Prakan. Now it was the turn of this incredible structure built out of wood.
At the start of the ride down my taxi driver stopped at what could be called the viewing point for this spectacular temple. This is within the grounds of this building. You could choose to take a horse and cart down it’s not much for the trip. This viewing point takes in all the Temple and it really does look its best from this part of the grounds. I went to the ticket office and was told the ticket price was 450 Baht. Expensive yes, but without payment I would not get my videos done or any photos taken for my web site. I was led away by a guide a Thai man who explained all about the start of the structure.
Then after about 20 minutes I was told that was the end of his talk and another guide would continue to take me round along with two other people. I would add at this point because building work is still going on, hard hats HAVE to be worn in case of any debris falling. Many workers are still employed in the continuing construction of the temple. This next guide was a Thai lady who did not want me wandering off taking photographs, or shooting videos and even reminded me to pay attention to what she had to say! I am a little too thick skinned for that and told her I was capable of multitasking and could listen and shoot photos at the same time. She did not seem amused. It really did make for an unpleasant tour and the high price of 450 Baht seemed excessive now.
Khmer architecture, sets the style of the Sanctuary displaying hand carved wooden sculptures which is reminiscent of the imperial setting of the temple at Angkor Wat in Cambodia ( Angkor Wat was first a Hindu and then later became a Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world ). The Sanctuary of Truth has four Gopurams ( which is a monumental tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of any temple ) representing images from the Buddhist and Hindu religions and mythologies of Cambodia, China, India and Thailand. Its purpose is to use art and culture as a reflection of the Ancient Vision of Earth and Ancient Knowledge along with Eastern Philosophy. The Sanctuary of Truth is full of wood carvings of Hindu and Buddhist gods and goddesses. The carvings are very beautiful and plentiful all around this temple.
The workers on this structure are experts, but then having seen Thai workmanship at the Royal Thai Handicraft Centre Co. Ltd. 240 Moo Don Gruay, Damnoen Saduak in Ratchaburi Province, I have witnessed the quality of many Thai workers who work with wood. They are high in the roof line and around the walls carving and working everyday. Yes I can understand the need for a hard hat should anything fall it’s a long way down to your head! The top point of the building is 105 metres
The temple covers an area of about 2 rai ( or 3,200 square metres ) and is situated on a beautiful plot of land by the sea at Rachvate Cape, 206/2 Moo 5, Soi Naklua 12 , Naklua, Banglamung, Chonburi and is built to withstand the elements you get in Thailand.

Natasha is great fun to work with. When we did our last photoshoot I was thinking about Steampunk style and content. I also thought about Shamanism and being close to the earth. So. this series is an attempt to blend both these thoughts and apply whichever makes sense to the image at hand.
But then I saw some work over on Loretta Lux... I may finish out my Steampunk/Shaman series... and move along to try my hand at the other technique...

I can't belive I never figured out this is how you do it. This is A LOT easier than any other way I've tried, and looks better too. Note that I said better, not good. I'm learning, though.
For example, I've already learned how to unravel from the beginning when you mess up the shape of the neck hole. One day I will learn to knit a ribbing that actually fills its function as opposed to being wider than the stockinette stitch. Also I need a thinner yarn.
I am truly spoiled... after many months of admiring Nikki and Nichelle, my friend was kind enough to buy them both for my birthday!!!!! Thank-you Girlplanet100, I LOVE them!
