You might feel down&out sometimes, but the simple fact that you can read this, on a computer/tablet/phone screen, most likely inside your own house, while there's enough food in the fridge, and nobody is shooting at you, means that you are privileged and lucky, you are not hungry or sick, you are not in some kind of war-zone and you are mostly free to do as you please...isn't that great? There are people who are not this fortunate, and I'm sure they'd be happy to be in your position right now...or possibly even on top of the 'I amsterdam' letters, one of the best places in the world to witness a beautiful sunset :)

I like this top and I think it will get several more outings. The necklace is different from that worn by my wife, though both were hers. I'm wearing an owl pendant and the owl is on the coat of arms for my village - adopted from the family whose land this was. It might be of interest to US followers as one member of the family was Captain Miles Standish of Pilgrim Father's fame and for his courtship
Lowari Pass (or Lowari Top) (el. 10,230 ft.) is a high mountain pass that connects Chitral with Dir in the North West Frontier Province, Pakistan. Lowari Top is a relatively low pass, by far the lowest pass to enter Chitral, the rest all being 12,000 to 15,000 feet.
Lowari Top is closed by snow from late November to late May every year. During this time, jeeps cannot cross so men must travel by foot. This is dangerous, as there are high mountains on each side of Lowari Top, and a deadly avalanche can come at any moment without warning.
Every winter a few persons are killed by avalanches while crossing Lowari Top. Their bodies are buried under the snow and it is only when the summer comes and the snow melts that their bodies are found and their fate learned.
Nevertheless, Lowari Top remains popular because it is the shortest route from Chitral to Peshawar. The other way would be down the Kunar River to Jalalabad through hostile Afghan Territory or the much longer route across Shandur Top to Gilgit.
Lowari Top crosses the Hindu Raj Mountains, a spur of the higher Hindu Kush. On the Chitral side of Lowari Top are the people of Ashret, who speak the Phalura language and were assigned by the Mehtar of Chitral to be the guardians of Lowari Top.
On the Dir side reside Gujjars, some of whom make their living as porters carrying loads across Lowari Top.
In 1954, the Mehtar of Chitral was killed when his airplane crashed into Lowari Top. Even today, PIA pilots often turn back because of winds and fear of crossing Lowari Top.
The word "Top" is believed not to be the English word "top" but a word from an ancient language no longer spoken there.
The Lowari Top is one of the four major mountain passes to enter Chitral. The others are the Dorah Pass from Badakshan in Afghanistan, Shandur Top from Gilgit, and Broghol from the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan.
The Lowari Tunnel is currently being constructed beneath Lowari Pass by a Korean company. Completion is expected in October 2008.

Baumann holt mit Bronze die erste Medaille für die ÖSV Herren. Der 27-Jährige nutzte seine Halbzeitführung nach der Kombi- Abfahrt und überraschte mit einem Top- Slalomlauf, der ihn mit 1,17 Sekunden Rückstand auf Platz drei und damit zur Bronzenen führte. Gold holte der US- Amerikaner Ted Ligety, Silber der Kroate Ivica Kostelic."Der Rennverlauf hat mir eigentlich geholfen. Ich habe gesehen, dass Leute wie Romar auf den Ivica (Kostelic, Anm.) fast keine Zeit verlieren", so Baumann nach dem Rennen. "Da habe ich mir gesagt, ich muss mich zusammenreißen, dann schaffe ich das auch. Ich habe den Platzsprecher schreien gehört, dass ich Zweiter bin und habe dann nur mehr versucht, Gas zu geben. Es war so geil."
Raich: "Vom Romed war es eine gewaltige Leistung". Weniger geil war das Rennen für Benni Raich, Österreichs eigentlich größte Hoffnung zur Halbzeit. Der Pitztaler scheiterte letztlich wegen einer blauen Torstange an seiner elften WM- Medaille - nachdem er mäßig ins Rennen gestartet war: Kurz nach der zweiten Zwischenzeit ereilte Raich zum Entsetzen der Tausenden Zuschauer an der Piste und im Ziel schließlich das Einfädler- Aus. "Ich habe von oben weg ziemliche Probleme gehabt. Die Abstimmung war nicht optimal. Aber vom Romed war es eine gewaltige Leistung", so Raich.
Ligety: "Es war schwierig, ich bin smart gefahren". Während Raich ebenso wie der verletzte Titelverteidiger Aksel Lund Svindal einfädelte, avancierte der Sechste nach der Abfahrt, Ligety, überlegen zum ersten Doppel- Weltmeister von Schladming. Und das, obwohl seine Paradedisziplin, der Riesentorlauf, noch aussteht. "Ich wusste, dass ich nach der Abfahrt in einer guten Position war, und bin smart gefahren. Es war schwierig, ich habe auch versucht, kontrolliert zu fahren. Aber ich bin seit neun Jahren im Weltcup und weiß, wie ich mit Druck umgehen muss. Jetzt hoffe ich, dass ich auch im Riesentorlauf ein gutes Rennen hinlegen kann."
Silbermedaillen- Gewinner Kostelic, nach der Abfahrt Zehnter, haderte zwar mit seiner Slalomleistung, zeigte sich über die Silberne aber alles andere als unzufrieden: "Ich bin sehr glücklich, das ist eine glückliche Medaille für mich. Ich hatte einen echt schlechten Slalomlauf, ich bin die Kurven schlecht gefahren und war auf der ganzen Strecke zu spät. Kombination ist Skifahren für mich, die Disziplin zeigt, wie fähig der Skifahrer ist."
Österreich hält dank zwei Tirolern bei zwei Bronzenen. Dank Romed Baumann hält das Gastgeberland in Schladming nach sechs Bewerben bei zwei Bronzemedaillen, die erste hatte Nicole Hosp am Freitag in der Damen- Super- Kombination geholt. Wie bei Landsfrau Hosp war es auch beim früheren Sieger von zwei Weltcup- Kombis in der jüngeren Vergangenheit nach einem Markenwechsel alles andere als gut gelaufen.
Dabei hätte Baumann am Ende sogar fast noch Silber geholt, nur zwei Hundertstel blieb der 27- Jährige in der Gesamtrechnung hinter Kostelic. Aber 17 Hundertstel vor dem erneut sensationell starken Finnen Andreas Romar, der in der Spezial- Abfahrt schon Fünfter geworden war.
Schrecksekunde in Abfahrt wegen Pistenrutscher. Für eine Schrecksekunde hatten übrigens während der Abfahrt zwei Pistenhelfer gesorgt, die nach dem Sturz eines Läufers an eine Unterbrechung geglaubt hatten, und acht Sekunden vor dem Schweizer Sandro Viletta in die Piste eingefahren waren. Einer davon war fast auf der Rennlinie unterwegs, als Viletta in voller Hocke daherkam. Der Schweizer blieb aber cool, überholte den Pistenrutscher und verzichtete auf einen Ersatzlauf.
"Sandro hat die Sache sehr fair hingenommen. Ich bin froh, dass nichts passiert ist", bedankte sich FIS- Chefrenndirektor Günter Hujara beim Schweizer für dessen sportliche Einstellung. Hujara wollte aber auch festgehalten wissen, dass die Arbeit und Koordination der Pistenrutscher bis dahin sehr gut funktioniert habe.
