Top Gons were always a fixture on the coal trains to Birmingham that ran down the AGS through North Alabama when I was growing up, but age coupled with the decline of coal traffic has brought about an end to their coal hauling days. Now the ones that haven't met the torch can still be found soldering on in maintenance of way service, still earning their keep hauling scrap crossties to salvage yards. This group still looks pretty good for being 30+ years past their rebuild dates now, and not too terribly vandalized yet for the most part as they roll east towards Columbus on a manifest out of Birmingham bound for Macon.
Tom Walsh was a sergeant in the Army during WWII. One of his men found this top hat in a French village. They took pictures of each other wearing it.
