4. Amarula :: By Rafa + Yumi :: Julep

7. Cutie Pie :: Hits

Não sei o que acontece com essas coleções de multichrome da Hits que, em mim, duram a eternidade. Fiquei a semana inteira (sim, 7 dias) com o esmalte intacto e só tirei pra pintar de outra cor no sábado por que o vício fala mais alto.

8. Mojito :: By Rafa

9. Grey Area :: Sally Hansen

O roxo/cinza/marrom mais lindo do mundo. Adoro cores que não são o que parecer ser!

When it comes to unique, iconic examples of midcentury modern homes, it’s hard to find one quirkier than John Lautner’s “Rawlins House” on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA.

Built in 1979 as a retirement home for physicist Bob Rawlins and his wife Marjorie, a musician, who both loved the midcentury style, but were looking for something a bit more interesting when they moved out West, the one-of-a-kind Rawlins House is now referred to fondly as the “treasure of Balboa Island”.

Due to its whimsical design, often described as looking like an open-mouthed shark or whale, it’s also called “Jaws” by neighbors.

John Lautner was their architect of choice for many reasons. He had studied with the renowned world-famous midcentury modern visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s, but more importantly, the Rawlins liked his specific architectural style, especially his Googie designs.

Googie style is kind of a mash-up of classical midcentury modern style and futurism inspired by the Atomic Age and the Space Age. The Rawlins house meshes both design styles with its bold use of glass and wood, its curvaceous exterior aesthetic, the spare, sleek minimalistic lines, the open concept, and its celebration of indoor/outdoor living.

The Rawlins House is considered one of Lautner’s most memorable urban designs by architectural critics. Located on South Bay Front in Newport Beach Harbor, the modernistic domed residence, sporting notable architectural features like a stunning copper balcony and roof, is the perfect retreat for entertaining friends and celebrating the sunset beach-side over dinner and drinks or welcoming overnight guests.

John Lautner’s House was privately owned by the original owners until 2010. Since 2014 it has been listed for sale by real estate agents in the Beverly Hills and Orange County areas. Originally listed at $5,395 million, the water’s edge residence has been reduced multiple times over the years.

It was eventually purchased in 2017 for $3.772. New homeowner, Michael LaFetra, had been eyeing the property for years. LaFetra is a preservationist and architecture restorer as well as a movie producer of horror films such as Stag Night and Night train.

2010/107 - 04/17 at 21 :05 UTC. Open-cell and closed-cell clouds off Peru, Pacific Ocean

Resembling a frosted window on a cold winter's day, this lacy pattern of marine clouds was captured off the coast of Peru in the Pacific Ocean by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on April 19, 2010. The image reveals both open- and closed-cell cumulus cloud patterns. These cells, or parcels of air, often occur in roughly hexagonal arrays in a layer of fluid (the atmosphere often behaves like a fluid) that begins to "boil," or convect, due to heating at the base or cooling at the top of the layer.

In "closed" cells warm air is rising in the center, and sinking around the edges, so clouds appear in cell centers, but evaporate around cell edges. This produces cloud formations like those that dominate the lower left. The reverse flow can also occur: air can sink in the center of the cell and rise at the edge. This process is called "open cell" convection, and clouds form at cell edges around open centers, which creates a lacy, hollow-looking pattern like the clouds in the upper right.

Closed and open cell convection represent two stable atmospheric configurations — two sides of the convection coin. But what determines which path the "boiling" atmosphere will take? Apparently the process is highly chaotic, and there appears to be no way to predict whether convection will result in open or closed cells. Indeed, the atmosphere may sometimes flip between one mode and another in no predictable pattern.

Another quick office fashion shoot with Catherine this week. She's hoping to get a new blog post up about this yellow top and possibly some accessories (nail polish and the like). We tried some new spots in and around the office to spice things up. It's difficult to find nice settings (with space for an 85mm prime on a crop body) to blur the background like I like to but you work with what you've got. I thought this rich wall might serve as a nice backdrop. I wish I hadn't shot from this angle so I didn't get the commercial carpeting but I also wanted to get the purse completely in there.. again, things to keep an eye out for next time.

Shot with my D90 and Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8. Light provided by an SB600 through a 36" shoot thru umbrella high camera right. Triggered by CLS.

Having refueled at my sister's feeder, this hummer takes off. Their wings beat so fast that even a shutter speed of 1/1500th of a second doesn't freeze the action. I like the sense of motion here that the moving wings provide.

I wanted the feeder and the (ten feet away) morning glory flowers and leaves to be in sunlight for this picture so that I could shoot this large heavy lens hand held, and not have to use a tripod. I very much wanted a well lit, out of focus, colorful background for the birds.

More hummingbird pictures, if that strikes your fancy, can be seen in my hummingbird set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157627149575339/...

Looking down the ladder while standing on top of the Water Tower was a very exhilarating feeling with some vertigo and fear mixed in. I was trying to get a good shot and leaning out over the ladder was very dangerous and silly thing to do, but what a total rush!

While in Washington DC at th spy museum we learned about a technique used by spies called a "Dead Drop" this is where an agent will drop off secret information for another to pick up. With this tgechnique thy ca pass along information without having direct contact with each other. They will hide it in inconspicuous locations...ordinary every day objects can be used to camouflage or hide secret documents in or under. In this picture there are 5 Dead Drop locations...can you find them?
