To celebrate 30 years of Cardiff Bus deregulation Cardiff Bus opened their depot to the public on October 31st 2016 for a spooky open day.
Built between 1959 and 1962, this Modern Futurist and Googie building was designed by Eero Saarinen and Associates for Trans World Airlines to serve as a Flight Center, or Terminal headhouse, for their passenger services at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. The building is an example of thin shell construction, with a parabolic and curved sculptural concrete roof and concrete columns, with many surfaces of the building's structure and exterior being tapered or curved. The building also appears to take inspiration from natural forms, with the roofs appearing like the wings of a bird or bat taking flight. The building served as a passenger terminal from 1962 until 2001, when it was closed.
The building's exterior is dominated by a thin shell concrete roof with parabolic curves, which is divided by ribs into four segments, with the larger, symmetrical north and south segments tapering towards the tallest points of the exterior walls, and soar over angled glass curtain walls underneath. At the ends of the four ribs are Y-shaped concrete columns that curve outwards towards the top and bottom, distributing the weight of the roof structure directly to the foundation. The east and west segments of the roof are smaller, with the west roof angling downwards and forming a canopy over the front entrance with a funnel-shaped sculptural concrete scupper that empties rainwater into a low grate over a drain on the west side of the driveway in front of the building, and the east roof angling slightly upwards, originally providing sweeping views of the tarmac and airfield beyond. The exterior walls of the building beneath the sculptural roof consist of glass curtain walls, with the western exterior wall sitting to the east of the columns and the eastern exterior wall being partially comprised of the eastern columns, with the curtain wall located in the openings between the columns. To the east and west of the taller central section are two half crescent-shaped wings with low-slope roofs, with a curved wall, integrated concrete canopy, tall walls at the ends, and regularly-spaced door openings. To the rear, two concrete tubes with elliptical profiles formerly linked the headhouse to the original concourses, and today link the historic building to the new Terminal 5 and Hotel Towers.
Inside, the building features a great hall with a central mezzanine, and features curved concrete walls and columns, complex staircases, aluminum railings, ticket counters in the two halls to either side of the front entrance, a clock at the center of the ceiling, and skylights below the ribs of the roof. The space features penny tile floors, concrete walls and built-in furniture, red carpeting, and opalescent glass signage. On the west side of the great hall, near the entrance, is a curved concrete counter in front of a large signboard housed in a sculptural concrete and metal shell that once displayed departing and arriving flights. On the north and south sides of this space are former ticket counters and baggage drops, which sit below a vaulted ceiling, with linear light fixtures suspended between curved sculptural concrete piers that terminate some ways below the ceiling. To the east of the entrance is a staircase with minimalist aluminum railings, beyond which is a cantilevered concrete bridge, with balconies and spaces with low ceilings to either side, off which are several shops, restrooms, and telephone booths. On the east side of the bridge is a large sunken lounge with red carpet and concrete benches with red upholstered cushions, surrounded by low concrete walls that feature red-cushioned benches on either side, sitting below a metal analog signboard mounted to the inside of the curtain wall. To the north and south of the lounge are the entrances to the concrete tubes that once provided access to the concourses, which are elliptical in shape, with red carpeted floors and white walls and a white ceiling. On the mezzanine are several former lounges and a restaurant, which feature historic mid-20th Century finishes and fixtures.
The complex includes two contemporary hotel towers, the Saarinen and Hughes wings, which were designed carefully to harmonize with the original building and match its character. The two wings feature concrete end walls, curved Miesian glass curtain walls, and interiors with red carpeting, wooden paneling, brass fittings and fixtures, and white walls and ceilings. The only substantial modification to the structure's significant interior spaces was the puncturing of the two concrete tubes to provide access to these towers. The former terminal also features several service areas that were not previously open to visitors, which today house a massive fitness center, a cavernous underground conference center, and various meeting rooms and ballrooms, with all of these spaces, except the fitness center, being redesigned to match the mid-20th Century modern aesthetics of the rest of the building, with new fixtures, furnishings, and finishes that are inspired directly by the time period in which the building was built, and are nearly seamless in appearance with the rest of the building.
The fantastic building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1994, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Between 2005 and 2008, the new Terminal 5, occupied by JetBlue, was built, which wraps the structure to the east, and was designed by Gensler, and was carefully placed so as to avoid altering or damaging the character-defining features of the historic terminal. Between 2016 and 2019, the building was rehabilitated in an adaptive reuse project that converted it into the TWA Hotel, which was carried out under the direction of Beyer Blinder Belle, Lubrano Ciavarra Architects, Stonehill Taylor, INC Architecture and Design, as well as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and MCR/Morse Development. The hotel features 512 guest rooms, large event spaces, a rooftop pool at the top of the Hughes Wing, a large basement fitness center, and a Lockheed Constellation L-1649A "Connie" on a paved courtyard to the east of the building, which houses a cocktail lounge. The hotel is heavily themed around the 1960s, and was very carefully designed to preserve the character of this iconic landmark.

A visit to the National Trust run estate of Stourhead in Wiltshire.
Stourhead is a 1,072-hectare (2,650-acre) estate at the source of the River Stour in the southwest of the English county of Wiltshire, extending into Somerset. The estate is about 4 km (2+1⁄2 mi) northwest of the town of Mere and includes a Grade I listed 18th-century Neo-Palladian mansion, the village of Stourton, one of the most famous gardens in the English landscape garden style, farmland, and woodland. Stourhead has been part-owned by the National Trust since 1946.
A look at the middle and top part of the Walled Garden, that we didn't see earlier on during this visit.

Little Dining Room
It began life as a garden hall, providing access to the south lawn outside, down twin flights of steps. But when Colt Hoare added the Library wing in 1792, he removed the door to the garden and steps. Between 1802 and 1809 he renovated the room and brought new furniture from Chippendale. The name 'Little Dining Room' was introduced in Victorian times to distinguish the room from the Saloon, used as the large dining room for more formal occasions.

NI Water recently renewed its commitment to improved services for those on its Customer Care Register at the company’s third Vulnerable Customer Forum held on 15th June.
The event, held at the customer contact centre in Belfast, saw representatives of numerous groups, including Health Trusts, the British Red Cross, Fold Telecare, Commissioner for Older People and the Consumer Council, gather to learn exactly how NI Water fields calls from customers who require extra help. Participants were treated to an in-depth tour of the working contact centre and given an update on NI Water’s progress in provision for older and more vulnerable customers.
Liam Mulholland, NI Water’s Head of Customer of Service Delivery, said: ‘‘We are delighted at the success of this event, part of an on-going engagement programme with representatives of the vulnerable and older person community. It was good to bring the group to our contact centre so they could see first-hand the scale of our call centre operation and learn exactly how we deal with vulnerable customers when they contact us.
“We also took time to explain how we reacted to the Boil Water Notice in Ballymoney last November, when numerous customers on our Customer Care Register were affected. NI Water ensured that provision of alternative supply to vulnerable customers was a priority during this incident.
“Building and maintaining stakeholder relations is very important to NI Water, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside these organisations and individuals in the future.’’
NI Water maintains a Customer Care Register, which individuals and organisations can sign up to ensure they are prioritised for alternative water supplies in the event of a significant supply disruption.
The Register also allows for a range of free additional services if customers have a disability, are older consumers, have a serious medical condition or need help for any other reason.

I started 2018 with a visit to Glasnevin Cemetery and the Botanic Gardens.
The cemetery is located in Glasnevin, Dublin, in two parts. The main part, with its trademark high walls and watchtowers, is located on one side of the road from Finglas to the city centre, while the other part, "St. Paul's," is located across the road and beyond a green space, between two railway lines. The Glasnevin Trust Museum was designed by A&D Wejchert & Partners Architects.
A gateway into the National Botanic Gardens adjacent to the cemetery was reopened in recent years.

Eddy's Basement - A great Band was brought in from Halifax to entertain the audience and to highlight ABF.
In 2017 ABF stopped bringing in Tribute bands to perform in Apple Blossom shows when cost conscious frugal Kentville moved to save money by inflicting severe public entertainment cut-back punishment on its citizens ?

Some bad news - Drastic cutbacks to public entertainment by the Town of Kentville will punish citizens and end the enjoyment of these guest Tribute band performances ? In an ongoing decline in content and quality of Kentville town entertainment, all normal mid-week public displays and entertainment that were always held at Memorial Park during the Apple Blossom Festival week have been curtailed by a new generation of administrators ? These Cost saving frugal decisions will conserve Town money by inflicting public entertainment cut-backs on citizens ?
More bad news, Drastic cutbacks by the Town of Kentville will end a long-time tradition of mid week Apple blossom open public entertainment normally held each year during the Apple Blossom Festival down at Memorial Park ? And so ever since these major entertainment cancellations backs in 2017, instead of an interesting and fun filled evening for the residents of Kentville, there's just a silent empty Park on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Kentville's Memorial Park during the Apple Blossom Festival ? No explanation, replacement, substitution or apology was ever offered ?

Great hike on the Hollyridge Trail up to the top of Mt. Lee and the Hollywood Sign. You get a great view of Griffith Park, downtown Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory, and the Hollywood Sign. I took this hike thanks to the great information on Dan's Hiking Pages description of the trail. The trail is 3 miles (round trip) with a rise in elevation of 550'.
To accommodate two-way traffic on a single line, Norry courtesy dictates that when two carriages meet, the one with the lighter load leaves the track.

New to Go Ahead London Central in November 2009, Volvo / Wright LX59 CZV was heavily damaged in the London Riots in August 2011, resulting in a partial rebuild of the vehicle, re-entering service in May 2012. Passing to Go North East in early 2023, the vehicle is seen here about to enter Durham Bus Station on 16th November 2024.
I finally managed to get a day off work today, and took the train to Exeter to meet a friend for lunch...
As I reached the foot of the station stairs, I turned to look back up the way I'd just come, and saw these glossy yellow handrails stretching up towards the light. Humdrum to some, but I liked it - then again, it doesn't take much to amuse me...
We decided to go for a city break rather than sun in Tenerife again this September. Other than a few days in the North East we haven’t been away since last March and wanted a change and hopefully some sun. The problem is getting flights from the north of England to the places we want to go to. We chose Valencia as we could fly from East Midlands – which was still a pain to get to as it involved the most notorious stretch of the M1 at five in the morning. In the end we had a fairly good journey, the new Ryanair business class pre-booked scheme worked quite well and bang on time as usual. It was dull when we landed with storms forecast all week, the sky was bright grey – the kiss of death to the photography I had in mind. I was full of cold and wishing I was at work. It did rain but it was overnight on our first night and didn’t affect us. There has been a drought for eleven months apparently and it rained on our first day there! The forecast storms didn’t materialise in Valencia but they got it elsewhere.
Over the course of a Monday to Sunday week we covered 75 miles on foot and saw most of the best of Valencia – The City of Bell Towers. The Old City covers a pretty large area in a very confusing layout. There was a lot of referring to maps – even compass readings! – a first in a city for us. The problem with photography in Valencia is that most of the famous and attractive building are closely built around, some have poor quality housing built on to them. Most photographs have to be taken from an extreme angle looking up. There are no high points as it is pan flat, there are a small number of buildings where you can pay to go up on to the roof for a better view and we went up them – more than once!
The modern buildings of The City of Arts and Sciences – ( Ciutat de Las Arts I de les Ciencies ) are what the city has more recently become famous for, with tourists arriving by the coachload all day until late at night. They must be photographed millions of times a month. We went during the day and stayed till dark one evening, I gave it my best shot but a first time visit is always a compromise between ambition and realism, time dictates that we have to move on to the next destination. I travelled with a full size tripod – another first – I forgot to take it with me to TCoAaS! so It was time to wind up the ISO, again! Needless to say I never used the tripod.
On a day when rain was forecast but it stayed fine, albeit a bit dull, we went to the Bioparc north west of the city, a zoo by another name. There are many claims made for this place, were you can appear to walk alongside some very large animals, including, elephants, lions, giraffe, rhino, gorillas and many types of monkey to name a few. It is laid out in different geographical regions and there is very little between you and the animals, in some cases there is nothing, you enter the enclosure through a double door arrangement and the monkeys are around you. It gets rave reviews and we stayed for most of the day. The animals it has to be said gave the appearance of extreme boredom and frustration and I felt quite sorry for them.
The course of The River Turia was altered after a major flood in the 50’s. The new river runs west of the city flanked by a motorway. The old river, which is massive, deep and very wide between ancient walls, I can’t imagine how it flooded, has been turned into a park that is five miles long. There is an athletics track, football pitches, cycle paths, restaurants, numerous kids parks, ponds, fountains, loads of bridges, historic and modern. At the western end closest to the sea sits The City of Arts and Sciences – in the river bed. Where it meets the sea there is Valencia’s urban Formula One racetrack finishing in the massive marina built for The Americas Cup. The race track is in use as roadways complete with fully removable street furniture, kerbs, bollards, lights, islands and crossings, everything is just sat on the surface ready to be moved.
We found the beach almost by accident, we were desperate for food after putting in a lot of miles and the afternoon was ticking by. What a beach, 100’s of metres wide and stretching as far as the eye could see with a massive promenade. The hard thing was choosing, out of the dozens of restaurants, all next door to each other, all serving traditional Paella – rabbit and chicken – as well as seafood, we don’t eat seafood and it constituted 90% of the menu in most places. Every restaurant does a fixed price dish of the day, with a few choices, three courses and a drink. Some times this was our only meal besides making the most of the continental breakfast at the hotel. We had a fair few bar stops with the local wine being cheap and pleasant it would have been a shame not to, there would have been a one woman riot – or strike!
On our final day, a Sunday, we were out of bed and down for breakfast at 7.45 as usual, the place was deserted barring a waiter. We walked out of the door at 8.30 – in to the middle of a mass road race with many thousands of runners, one of a series that take place in Valencia – apparently! We struggled to find out the distance, possibly 10km. The finish was just around the corner so off we went with the camera gear, taking photos of random runners and groups. There was a TV crew filming it and some local celebrity (I think) commentating. Next we came across some sort of wandering religious and musical event. Some sort of ritual was played out over the course of Sunday morning in various locations, it involved catholic priests and religious buildings and another film crew. The Catholic tourists and locals were filling the (many) churches for Sunday mass. Amongst all of this we had seen men walking around in Arab style dress – the ones in black looked like the ones from ISIS currently beheading people – all carrying guns. A bit disconcerting. We assumed that there had been some sort of battle enactment. We were wrong, it hadn’t happened yet. A while later, about 11.30 we could hear banging, fireworks? No it was our friends with the guns. We were caught up in total mayhem, around 60 men randomly firing muskets with some sort of blank rounds, the noise, smoke and flames from the muzzles were incredible. We were about to climb the Torres de Serranos which is where, unbeknown to us, the grand, and deafening, finale was going to be. We could feel the blast in our faces on top of the tower. Yet again there was a film camera in attendance. I couldn’t get close ups but I got a good overview and shot my first video with the 5D, my first in 5 years of owning a DLSR with the capability. I usually use my phone ( I used my phone as well). Later in the day there was a bullfight taking place, the ring was almost next to our hotel, in the end we had other things to do and gave it a miss, it was certainly a busy Sunday in the city centre, whether it’s the norm or not I don’t know.
There is a tram system in Valencia but it goes from the port area into the newer part of the city on the north side, it wouldn’t be feasible to serve the historic old city really. A quick internet search told me that there are 55,000 university students in the city, a pretty big number. I think a lot of the campus is on the north side and served by the tram although there is a massive fleet of buses as well. There is a massive, very impressive market building , with 100’s of stalls that would make a photo project on its own, beautiful on the inside and out but very difficult to get decent photos of the exterior other than detail shots owing to the closeness of other buildings and the sheer size of it. Across town, another market has been beautifully renovated and is full of bars and restaurants and a bit of a destination in its own right.
A downside was the all too typical shafting by the taxi drivers who use every trick in the book to side step the official tariffs and rob you. The taxi from the airport had a “broken” meter and on the way home we were driven 22 km instead of the nine that is the actual distance. Some of them seem to view tourists as cash cows to be robbed at all costs. I emailed the Marriot hotel as they ordered the taxi, needless to say no answer from Marriot – they’ve had their money. We didn’t get the rip off treatment in the bars etc. that we experienced in Rome, prices are very fair on most things, certainly considering the city location.
All in all we had a good trip and can highly recommend Valencia.
A felt cozy is a great thing to whip up, especially for the holiday season. It will definitely add a touch of home and nostalgia on your table, fireplace, etc.
Here's a photo of a prototype. I spotted them on sale at one of the large book chains here in Canada. I immediately thought, hey, I have some wet felting materials around. Why not try it out?
These cozies were also inspired by our event at the National Gallery of Canada in September, where Spins & Needles presented wet-felting projects for the first time. Check out the pics here: www.flickr.com/photos/spinsandneedles/sets/72157622305198...

Planning to vlog your trip to the mesmerizing lands of Punta Cana? Then, make a plan to hop inside the quads to ride through the rough country roads.
Everyone can relax at the beaches and swim in the sea, but does it truly provide a wholesome experience of the place? Definitely not!
To feel the real vibe of any place, you need to take the rough roads and feel the soil. Roam in the off-routes along the ranches to see the local lives of the actual Dominicans.
Why opt for the ride?
Have an unforgettable day at the Macao beach while you set your journey through the uneven terrains. With these quads, you get a chance to travel through the muds while soaking in the aroma of the freshly harvested farms.
First stop: Enter a local farm to see the local goods coffee, cocoa, tobacco, and other organic spices. You can also buy some fresh items to take them back with you to urban life!
Stop two: After riding through the muds, it’s time to wash your journey dirt in the cool water body. Dive into the subterranean cave water and enjoy the cool water in the dark and moist cave ambiance.

I was gifted these Mizunos a year ago (as I'm posting these, about 9 months before the photos were taken). My kind friend overseas has provided me with quite a number of wonderfully broken in shoes.
I had never heard of Mizuno before getting these. Nice, comfortable sneakers.
They are US size 8 1/2, a little larger than I usually wear, particularly as I've been into wearing "too small" shoes for some years now, but I've recently acquired some nicely broken in (like these) shoes somewhat larger than my "real" size, and I've found most of them quite comfortable. So, now I have shoes as small as child's Y13 and as large as US 9 or 10 which I wear (and a couple even larger, but they look like clown shoes on my feet).
But these are just perfect in size and condition. I think they must have belonged to a bicycle messenger at some point, as the soles are nicely chewed up.

Deboxing the Aurora Doll from the Disney Store's Disney Film Collection. As with the Maleficent doll in the same line, it was easy to remove the plastic cover off the cardboard backing. First I cut all the tape holding the edges of the plastic to the backing. Then I pulled the tabs of the plastic cover out of the slots in the backing. The doll is now in the open, but still attached to the backing and spacers. The bottom of the backing was not square with the back side, so I had to place a wad of tissue paper under the front edge to make the doll stand up straight.
I just received my online order from the Disney Store, of the newly released The Disney Maleficent Movie Dolls and Mugs. The dolls are the Maleficent and Aurora 12'' dolls of the Disney Film Collection. The mugs are Maleficent and Dragon mug and the Maleficent and Aurora mug. I ordered them last Tuesday, when the dolls were released online, so it took exactly one week to arrive. Both mugs are very beautiful, and it's hard for me to pick a favorite now. The only slight disappointment is that they have the same design on both sides. Both dolls look very good, but I'm liking Aurora more at this point, mainly because I like her face more than Maleficent's. I think the Dark Beauty Maleficent doll by Jakks Pacific is a better likeness of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent. I will post photos of both dolls boxed, then during deboxing, and finally fully deboxed. I will also show them side by side with other comparable dolls, especially the Jakks versions.
