This is a house near to my parents' place that has been a building site for about a year. We have no idea what the owner is trying to do with it, or why it is taking so long. Why would you have what looks to be a door above a sloping roof?
1953 Voigtlander Perkeo I with Vaskar lens. Ektachrome E100VS, 1/100s f/16.
This is my first roll of E100VS. I've been told that it is an often overlooked film here in the UK. I'll definitely be using it more.
There had been some discussion, prior to NEMF, about photographing the specimens. After speaking with Bill Yule about it, I conducted an experiment, a run at shooting as many samples as I could. I managed to photograph all the specimens that had been identified from Friday morning’s forays, only stopping when the afternoon foray samples started to come in, at which point I was ready to collapse anyway.
So here is what I did:
I came in to set up somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. I had a small table, a tripod with an attachment for my iPhone (4s, if that matters, point is, a state-of-the-art model is not necessary) that is pretty much the same spring-loaded holder you get on a selfie stick. I had two lights, just little gooseneck bedside clamp lamps from IKEA. The light was yellow, but one can correct these things in one fell swoop. If needed, better lights can be acquired.
I put the lamps, one on each side, on the backs of chairs spaced a little ways away from my table. I had also brought tuff-spun and other diffusion materials and even a blue gel, but decided against using them. The point here is speed and ease. Quick and dirty is fine as long as the visual data is captured. There is no point in developing a system if it is not feasible.
I brought a roll of gaffer’s tape. (Yeah, my lights were crap, but I had the good tape.) Once things are positioned the legs of the table and tripod and light stands (chairs) are taped down and the tripod is taped to the table. If the power cords are in traffic areas, they should also be taped down for safety and to secure the set up. As my iPhone is elderly, I keep it plugged into to the power, and this was taped up the leg of the tripod. The longer you shoot, the more tired you get, the more likely you are to knock into things, so this is helpful.
I had a plastic mat with a grid on it as a background, but did not use it because it was a dark green. I ended up stealing some cardboard boxes that had held envelopes from the office supplies; the insides were a bit closer to the 18% gray that would have been ideal. Grid not so necessary, but I did miss the ease of cleaning the plastic mat. The optimal background material in the future would be around 18% and a non-reflective plastic. Some mushrooms were wet and left marks on the plastic. The dirt brushed off easily with a small terrycloth rag.
The photo station was set up next to the door. I photographed samples after they had been IDed, usually after the printed labels had been made. But in order to keep up with the volume of specimens, I kept working when Teague & Dorothy & everyone else had gone to the meeting. At that time I photographed specimens that had been IDed, but not yet entered into the system. In any event, I was photographing the mushrooms with their hand-printed data labels as these were smaller and contained more information.
Such mushrooms photographed before being entered were replaced in the queue. As soon as specimens were photographed and labeled, they were put on trays to be moved to the display room. (Often I ended up moving them when a tray was filled and I was waiting on new mushrooms to shoot.)
I had NOT photographed mushroom samples like this before, so I am sure I was doing a lot of wheel re-invention. So I was, and am, open to suggestions in this context. One of the attendees who had clearly done mushroom photography before was put off by my rough & ready set up because of the obvious shadows. This, I take it, goes against the common aesthetic conventions of mushroom photography. But I was not taking beauty shots. And aesthetics are largely fashion. Shadows define form and texture. Form and texture are data, so I wanted shadows. Well, enough shadows to provide information, not to obscure information.
I shot hard for about five hours and then I was TOAST. I ain’t as young as I used to be. To do this on a convention scale, a team of shooters would be optimal. Moreover, I would like to have two photo stations set up so I could have one dedicated to shooting macro. iPhone macro adapters are the way to go, IMO.
As it was I had two levels. Most mushrooms I shot on a box, but for the larger ones to fit in the frame I removed the box. This dropped the surface down about five inches and allowed larger mushrooms to fit into the frame.
To set up a shot I would place the label under the camera. I tried to put them roughly in the same position each time. Some were crumpled. Flattening them wasted time. Optimally I would have set up a label-sized piece of non-reflective glass or plastic on the background, hinged with a bit of gaffer’s tape. This would have solved the positioning issues nicely.
The samples were removed from their boats (looking at them all day long left me with a terrible craving for fried clams, or at least French fries) by hand so as to leave most of the dirt in the boat. A few specimens I had to brush off. Mostly I did not bother. Probably the largest chunk of time was spent positioning. If I had more time, I would have split more caps in order to show top and bottom surfaces. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to split stems/stalks/stipes (whatever you call ‘em) when there are multiple specimens at hand.
I had selected a table height under the assumption that I would be sitting. Absurd. No time to sit. I was moving constantly from table to table moving specimens. The angle made the whole thing a bit physically punishing. I won’t make that mistake again! Ergonomics are key!
A strong suggestion for future foray photo inventories is to shoot the wee tiny ‘shrooms first. I got photos, albeit not macros, of the Mycenas and what all. But they were so dehydrated by the time I got them that they were worthless. On the bright side, this meant I didn’t feel so bad about not having macro capability. But even with a splendid macro set up, if the specimens look like shit, there’s not point. So a bit of a presort has to happened wherein the teeny tinies and the fragile stuff are bumped to the front of the queue.
And the iPhone is frickin’ brilliant for this. I love cameras. I’ve done a lot with point & shoots. I like nice fancy DSLRs as well, but they are not necessary for this sort of project. More than that, a real camera would be a hassle. The iPhone has the memory, the software, the touch screen and it fits in a pocket. It makes all of this feasible. A few tweaks to the set up and it will go very smoothly next time. If there were two shooters, it would be easy, a piece of cake.
The photos are not art shots, but they show the specimens. Not a bad first try, I think. Are these beautiful? Maybe not so much. Still, like my Dad used to always tell us, “Good enough is better than the best!”

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Goodbye Angels
Red Hot Chili Peppers, also sometimes shortened to The Chili Peppers or abbreviated as RHCP, are an American alternative rock/funk rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The group's musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. When played live, their music incorporates elements of jam band due to the improvised nature of much of their performances. Currently, the band consists of founding members vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea, longtime drummer Chad Smith, and former touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best-selling bands of all time with over 80 million records sold worldwide, have been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, of which they have won six, and are the most successful band in alternative rock radio history, currently holding the records for most number-one singles (13), most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and most top-ten songs (25) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Before i got to taking Bobby's picture i approached a young couple with a really pretty lil daughter. But they turned me down, which is understandable...
I met Bobby at one of my outings with the local photo group i belong to. She was sitting on a bench admiring the colorful orchid next to her. I asked for her permission to photograph her & told her about the project. She was infact a lil excited that am going to be posting her picture online :)

Two feats of spacecraft navigation and control combined to create this awesome action shot of Phoenix falling to its landing on Mars on May 25. The Phoenix polar lander was nearing the end of its 679-million-kilometer journey to Mars. It had completed the fiery entry period of its landing, jettisoned its heat shield, and deployed its parachute. At the same time, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was flying on its own path around Mars. The photo, captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, was designed to capture an image of Phoenix that might help engineers figure out the cause of a failure of Phoenix upon landing, so the orbiter was programmed to spin as the image was taken to compensate for Phoenix’s apparent motion and produce a sharp image of the spacecraft. With the fast relative speeds of Phoenix along with the orbiter, and the uncertainty in Phoenix’s exact position that arose from uncertainties about how long its entry would take, the HiRISE team predicted only a 20 percent chance of successfully capturing an image of Phoenix in flight. Both the imaging attempt and the landing were successful, so the image was not needed for engineering, but it provided an amazing snapshot of a spacecraft in the act of landing on another planet. HiRISE is so sharp an imager that you can even make out the stripes on the parachute and the shroud lines connecting it to the lander. Initially, analysts focused only on Phoenix. But upon further investigation of their image, the HiRISE team realized that the background view was impressive, too: a 10-kilometer crater named Heimdall, on whose ejecta blanket Phoenix now sits. (Although it appears that Phoenix was falling into the crater, that’s an optical illusion. The view is oblique, and Phoenix was much closer to the orbiter than was the crater.) Later, the team realized that the blackened heat shield of Phoenix is also visible in the image as a black dot falling toward Mars on a trajectory similar to the bright spacecraft. The image includes some color data, though unfortunately not over Phoenix itself. HiRISE takes images in long, skinny strips, and only the very skinniest center portion of the strip ever contains any color data. The gaps between the color strips are caused by the fact that the camera's detector is actually made up of 14 staggered CCDs, and the spacecraft had to slew at an angle in order not to capture a distorted view of Phoenix. Most of the color information indicates that the landscape is the usual red of Mars, but some blue spots indicate the presence of frost inside Heimdall crater. Credit: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona
HiRISE also turned its lens to Phoenix on the ground. The color images at left, taken just after landing, show the lander itself, the heat shield, and the parachute attached to the back shell against red Mars. The parachute and lander are about 300 meters apart. The false color image at right shows the lander on December 21, about 6 weeks after it ceased communication. Frost is not yet apparent here during the last waning days of northern hemisphere summer, but the image appears bluish and blurry due to atmospheric haze. Credit: NASA/JPL/UA

The feature that is common to most Spodosols is the presence of a spodic horizon, in which amorphous mixtures of organic matter and aluminum, with or without iron, have accumulated. The spodic horizon may be destroyed by cultivation, yet spodic materials may still be present. In undisturbed soils there commonly is an overlying eluvial horizon, generally with a gray or light gray color similar to that of uncoated quartz. In some Spodosols this horizon is too thin to be preserved after cultivation, while in others it is very thick. Below the spodic horizon, there may be a fragipan or another sequum that has an argillic horizon.
A few Spodosols have a placic horizon either on or within a spodic horizon or on a fragipan. Some Spodosols have layers thicker than a placic horizon that are cemented by spodic materials and organic matter (ortstein). Most Spodosols have few clay-sized phyllosilicates. The particle-size class is mostly sandy, sandy-skeletal, coarseloamy, loamy-skeletal, or coarse-silty. In a few of the soils, it is fine-loamy. Spodosols are most extensive in areas of cool, humid or perhumid climates. They also formed, however, in hot, humid tropical regions and in warm, humid regions, where they occur mostly in areas of quartz-rich sands that have a fluctuating level of ground water. In many of the latter soils, the silt and sand fractions contain very few weatherable minerals and the albic horizons tend to be thick. Soils with an albic horizon 200 cm or more thick, however, are excluded from Spodosols and are grouped with Entisols.
Some of the very deep spodic horizons may be buried, but it seems likely that others have formed at great depths because the overlying soil materials have very little iron and aluminum that could precipitate the organic carbon. In some areas the source of aluminum may be the ground water. Exclusion of a soil from Spodosols if the albic horizon is very thick is largely pragmatic. The chemical and physical properties of many Spodosols and Andisols are very similar. The definition of spodic materials, however, is based on the concept of organic matter and aluminum, with or without iron, accumulating by illuviation.
The Spodosols in the United States occur mainly in areas of late-Pleistocene or Holocene deposits. They are common in Alaska, in the higher mountains of the West, in the Great Lakes States, in the Northeast, and along the Atlantic coast of both the United States and Canada. They also occur in Northern Europe and northwestern Asia as well as New Zealand and southern Australia. Most are covered with coniferous or, less commonly, hardwood forests if they are not cultivated or grazed. In tropical areas the vegetation may be rain forest, palms, or a savanna that probably is anthropic. The moisture regime of Spodosols is mostly udic, but a few of the soils have a xeric regime. Some have aquic conditions. Spodosols may have any soil temperature regime. Spodosols are naturally infertile, but they can be highly responsive to good management. Under cultivation, the spodic horizon may be biologically destroyed, particularly if lime and nitrogen are applied.

After a restful evening in the bunk house at the Whitefish Bike Retreat Elyse and I rented some mountain bikes & explored the trails surrounding the property. It was fun to hang out with the cool staff including the owner Cricket and their dogs. We met back up with Russ & Laura in the afternoon, hitched a ride back to town in the van together, went out to dinner in Whitefish downtown then hung out at the Amtrak station until our Empire Builder Train arrived from the east. R&L had to box up their bikes for the train car bound for Portland but our Seattle train car allowed for roll on service since it had bike hooks. Elyse and I decided to try out one of Amtrak's fancy private sleeper car rooms for the ride from Whitefish to Seattle since the Empire Builder always travels through the night during this section.

The Airpower Foundation was proud to partner with American Airlines, MGM Resorts International, The Gary Sinise Foundation, Terry Fator, Chef Robert Irvine, USO Metro, Greyhound, Sundance Helicopters, Still Serving Promos, Friends of Freedom, The Fremont St. Experience, and many additional partners and supporters to present Salute to the Troops 2017!
For the 9th year in a row, American Airlines donated a special 757 chartered aircraft to bring 140 wounded ill or injured service members and a guest to Las Vegas.
Activities included a heroes welcome at the Mirage which was our home for the weekend. From there our guests enjoyed the Secret Garden at the Mirage, the shark reef at Mandalay Bay, a private dinner with Gary Sinise at Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory, an amazing concert with Phil Vandel opening and then Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band on Fremont Street!
Sunday our nations heroes flew up and down the Las Vegas Strip thanks to Sundance Helicopters, and then enjoyed an amazing meal at Chef Robert Irvine's Public House Restaurant. Then master magician, Criss Angel, put on an amazing show at the Luxor for everyone. After the show, Criss spent some very special time with our warriors answering questions, and just having fun.
Wounded heroes also enjoyed a tour of Hover Dam, and a great Dinner at the Tournament of Kings at Excalibur. And of course our dear friend and supporter of all who serve, Terry Fator put on an amazing show for everyone!
The final day included a wonderful brunch at the Luxor before heading back on our donated American Airlines charter and the all volunteer flight crew who took such good care of everyone all weekend long!
A huge thank you to all those who volunteered their time and resources to make this weekend possible!
To take it easy, we chose to remain in the house and continue with fishing and birding. And we managed to catch 4 fishes for lunch! Extended Family Trip to Western Australia from 7 to 16 Jun 2016. (photo by Ben Cho)

Fine art photograph of Crater Lake in Oregon. Crater lake was formed 7,700 years ago when the volcano, Mount Mazama collapsed. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake. Its water supply comes from rain and snow and it is estimated that around every 250 years, this water supply is completely replenished through the continual process of evaporation. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US. It originally, had no native fish, but from 1888 to 1941 the lake was stocked with a variety of fish of which several species have established self sustaining populations. This stunningly beautiful lake is located in Klamath County and about 80 miles northeast of the city of Medford. It measures 5 by 6 miles across and reaches a fluctuating depth of 1,148 feet. Not only known for its exquisite visual impact, Crater Lake is also known among the Klamath Indians a highly significant spiritual sight. Often leading the Klamath people to seek their vision quest at the lake, by performing very dangerous climbing tasks in and around the caldera.

About Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The May 25, 1977 theatrical debut of Star Wars --- on a scant 32 screens across America -- was destined to change the face of cinema forever. An instant classic and an unparalleled box office success, the rousing "space opera" was equal parts fairy tale, western, 1930s serial and special effects extravaganza, with roots in mythologies from cultures around the world.
From the mind of visionary writer/director George Lucas, the epic space fantasy introduced the mystical Force into the cultural vocabulary and it continues to grow, its lush universe ever-expanding through film, television, publishing, video games and more.

“The future is there looking back at us.” — William Gibson
According to a recent Fast Company article, design has “matured from a largely stylistic endeavor to a field tasked with solving thorny technological and social problems.” Designers are no longer relegated to the downstream position of making things look pretty. We now have a seat at the table. No longer makers, we now aspire to be leaders. Design is everywhere, yet is now called upon to respond to constantly changing technological, demographic, and environmental conditions.
In this space between ubiquity and obsolescence, how can designers develop ways of working and collaborating that respond to our contemporary world? Join us for a monthly series of provocations at MAD where practitioners and critics discuss the changing nature of design and visual culture and its impact on the also changing fields of music, education, fashion, and more.

Leonard Cohen Concert
Air Canada Centre
Toronto, Ontario Canada
Dec 5, 2012
Late postings of the fabulous Leonard Cohen concert last week.... not too happy with these photos since there are many backs of heads in them, however, I didn't want to ruin the experience for all those behind me and I wanted to enjoy the concert as well! as it was, I know I missed a few moments adjusting the camera etc... Nice to "enjoy the moment" but also nice to have some memories to look back on! Enjoy
Fifteen dogs were brought to the Senedd on 2 November to raise awareness of a petition calling on the Welsh Government to undertake an independent inquiry into the enforcement of animal welfare standards in the puppy farming industry in south west Wales.
The petition, which has more than 3,500 signatures, states that an independent investigation is needed due to concern that puppy farming licences are issued too easily and rules are not being properly enforced.
The petition will be handed in at 12.00pm on the Senedd steps to the chair of the cross-party Petitions Committee, William Powell AM.

Fairytale Designer Cinderella and Lady Tremaine have been deboxed, and reposed in their original display case. They are standing sided by side, supported by the built-in display stands. Detailed photos of the Cinderella and Lady Tremaine DFDC limited edition doll set that I bought on the release day (September 6, 2016) from my local Disney Store. There were only about 10 people who entered the raffle for the 18 doll sets available. My set is numbered #2287 of 6000. I didn't see any significant flaws when I inspected the set at the register. I didn't get a gift bag when I bought the set, but returned the next day and they gave me one. The set is still available online, and in some stores as of Friday September 9.
Cinderella does have teeth in her face mold. They are painted over to give the illusion of a closed mouth. But at the angle that her head is positioned, it is hard to see the painted over teeth, and the illusion is very convincing.
Cinderella is wearing dark pink high heels with articulated ankles. She has blemish on her cheek that looks like hair product that spilled onto her face. So I was able to wash it off when I took the cover off the display case. Her hair is stiff with hair product, so I decided to leave her hair alone after deboxing, even though it looks a bit messy, and some of her hair curls around her neck.
When I deboxed Lady Tremaine, I unpinned her skirt so it's much fuller. I also unpinned her scarf so it falls freely from her head. It is sewn to her hair. I left Cindy's skirt pinned together in the front (so it looks pleated), but I may free it later.
This is my favorite set in this year's Designer Collection, and has been since I first saw images of it. Cinderella looks even more beautiful in person than in photos. I love her hair color and her face. Lady Tremaine's outfit is outstanding, and is much better than the one on the 17 inch Limited Edition Lady Tremaine from 2012.

These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external hard drive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.

So I've basically wanted to do a Hunger Games themed picture for a while now, and I had just bought that dress a little bit before my birthday, it's light blue. When I wore it for my birthday dinner with a ton of gold jewelry, I was thinking about how I wanted to take a picture with it and rock the side braid because it looks movie Katniss :)
I personally loved the movie, it's one of the only book to movie's I've liked for quite some time now... but when you think about the story line- book or movie.... it's quite disturbing. I couldn't help but feel my heart get wrenched out multiple times in both- it doesn't matter, the message is clear.
This picture has so many flaws in it I can't even count. I really wanted this to be a good picture.... tomorrows another day. Another try.
Oh and if you haven't listened to Taylor Swift "Eye's Open" song on the Hunger Games soundtrack, go listen. It's beautiful and the title for this picture is directly from the song :)
The little power I had, I exercised - this matter NEVER reared it's head again thanks to the press!!

People are very happy and excited to see the arrival of the decorated idol of Lord Azhagar being carried from Azhagarkoil Temple in the hills right down to their streets.
There are special places of the deity's visit, known as 'Mandahappadi'. People gather in these places to welcome the Lord .They pray whole-heartedly before the deity's idol.
Some ladies are seen worshipping Him by holding before Him lighted camphor in plates of Betal leaves, nuts and flowers. This ritual is known as "Deepa Aradhanai" in Tamil.
A mirror is kept before the idol so that devotees can get a glimpse of the Lord at least in the mirror in the crowd.

According to Wikipedia, the Medal of Honor has been awarded 3,520 times to 3,501 individuals. I've now photographed four of them - so I have some work to do.
The Black Hills National Cemetery is one of the most bucolic of the nation's national cemeteries. Located near Sturgis, SD, just off of I-90 - the setting is just lovely - surrounded by forested hills. One MOH recipient is buried there - Sgt. Charles Windolph. Windolph was a private at the Battle of Little Big Horn (aka Custer's Last Stand), on June 25-26, 1876. Windolph, along with three comrades during the two-day disaster for the US 7th Cavalry, maintained a position to keep the entire command supplied with water.
From Wikipedia: "The 7th Cavalry overall suffered 52 percent casualties [at the battle]. Every soldier of the five companies with Custer was killed. In 1878, the army awarded 24 MOH to participants in the fight on the bluffs for bravery, most for risking their lives to carry water from the river up the hill to the wounded."
Windolph survived the battle, and lived to the age of 98.

Lots of new buildings towards Perry Barr. Probably the accommodation that was supposed to be the Athletes Village of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In July 2015 work commenced to excavate parts of the floor of the Cathedral ruins in order to provide waterproofing for the crypt chapels beneath the north-east corner. As a result sections of the pre-war floor of the cathedral have been revealed for the first time since the building was destroyed by bombing in 1940.
It appears that the postwar paving of the ruins was laid over the original floor and much of the war debris, thus burying it at a depth of more than two feet in places. Though badly damaged by the collapse of so much of the building many of the ledger slabs, memorial inscriptions laid in the old floor, can be seen for the first time since the bombing. One slab in particular shows the indents of late medieval brasses, with the ghostly outlines of a man and his two wives. In other places there are even fragments of burnt wood visible that were once part of the lost choir stalls.
At one end of the excavated area a pit is visible that reveals two medieval windowcills and a small niche above a doorway, which currently define the outer edge of the Wyley Chapel crypt, but originally formed part of St Mary's chapel, a formerly two-storey building that was later partially demolished and incorporated into St Michael's church when it was extended in the later Middle Ages.
For two weeks sections of the floor will remain visible giving visitors a rare glimpse of what lies beneath the current paving of the ruins before a new waterproof membrane is installed and the area repaved as before.

According to the tradition, the grotto of the Nativity is the place where Christ was born of the Virgin Mary. On this grotto, a Basilica with a nave and 4 aisles was built and it is accessible through a humble entrance. Around the grotto of the Nativity, there are other grottoes tied to the memory of St. Jerome. Next to the Basilica lies the Church of St. Catherine preceded by a small courtyard.
