Hey guys. Not as proud of this photo as I'd like to be, it was very last minute due to an assignment being due tonight for uni. I'm so determined to take a better photo for next week. I really want to be back in that happy place of photography again. I'm not in the place I want to be right now. Hope you're all well. I have a new blog post up about the Sydney Meet Up. I'll be creating another one too within the next few days so keep a look out. I also have a new place for you all to ask me some questions. I'd love to hear from you all. Ask your questions/leave me a message here :)

Sigh, back to the archives again!
Came across this old photo of a hungry Common Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) recently, when I was backing up a few more files and deleting them from my computer. Taken at Sikome, Fish Creek Park, on 17 December 2009.
■The common porcupine is a large, robust rodent. Adults weigh about 10 kilograms (22 pounds).
■Has a thick tail, and short powerful legs with long curved claws.
■Coat is composed of rows of dense, brown undercoat with yellow-tipped guard hairs.
■Guard hairs alternate with rows of loosely attached quills that vary from 25 to 65 millimetres (1 to 2.5 inches) in length.
■Quills taper to a sharp and stiff point that is covered with very small barbs.
■Quills are hollow, thus reducing their weight and providing buoyancy when the animal occasionally swims.

I have had this shot in my stream for a while but was unhappy with the colour version so thought that mono did the wonderful light on this day more justice...
Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic for Island of Donan), is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is named after St Donan, a Celtic saint martyred in the Dark Ages.

the difference of lighting

Massive lightning strike next to solo tree over rural gravel road in Southern Manitoba
I hate that I have to rely on this tiny chalky tablet, but I do. Without it, I can easily sink into misery. ODC: small & important
You will notice in the background of the parent Kangaroo that Trev has finished setting up his shot (previous upload) and is now ready for action! :-))))
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
oh, it makes me wonder...
...and she's buying the stairway to heaven.

Gulls returning to roost in the fading late afternoon light at Langford Lakes near Wilton in Wiltshire. I wanted to use the compression of the 600mm here and I think it's worked out well.

I've seen so many versions of majestic views of Yosemite taken at Tunnel View viewpoint, and this time I have my own version of it, which it turns out to be my favorite image of the trip.
This was the last day of our 3-day Yosemite trip, and because of the itinerary, we didn't have time to take sunrise photos as we did in the first two days. But that turns out to be a lucky decision because by the time we arrived at Tunnel View, the sun was just at the right angle to cast that amazing light ray into the valley. If we were to be here before sunrise, we wouldn't wait until 1.5 hours after sunrise to witness this moment. Absolutely love the sense of depth and vastness that this images gives me.

Situated next to St Peter’s Church in Heysham is the peaceful Glebe Garden. Recently transformed by local volunteer gardeners from an overgrown and neglected area into an oasis of peace and calm, with memorial seats and a range of roses including the original species of the Red Rose of Lancaster.
During our trip, one of the most spectacular things I have witnessed was the intense thunderstorms that continued after the sunset. The lightning strikes were easily 1 or more every second, some of them bright enough to make it look like day time.
When you get strikes this often, you begin to be picky about the shape and position of the strikes... We stopped on the roadside to try to capture some strikes and stumbled upon this grain silo in the middle of a field. Despite having plenty of strikes, we wanted one right above the silo. I think all of us in the group managed to capture this stunning cloud-to-cloud strike.
This picture was sent to me by a friend with no ID who made the picture. It’s been around the internet. I used Photoshop to improve the image for Flickr
But what’s really important is not the picture maker but who did the sculpture? This is an amazing work of art. I like how the artist uses minimal carvings on each pumpkin and yet you know exactly what he is trying to say. As an art historian I would rank it with other great sculptures especially those of the modern era. This would make a wonderful addition to any museum. If the artist could be identified I would lovingly place his or her name here.
Every time I look at this I laugh or smile. So that’s the main reason I placed it. Flickr people have a good laugh in these sad economical times.

This sign caught my eye, it's to the point! C'mon in and buy dead people's stuff! Not sure it's a good sign from a marketing point of view, in my opinion. This woman walked in, briefly. From their facebook site: An ever-changing curation of quality wearable vintage and knickknacks, all 20 years or older. In reality though, it's no different than buying items from an estate sale.

Been meaning to do this shot for ages, this weeks theme finally gave me the reason to get my backside in gear and actually create it.
It's a composite of two shots, one of the broken bulb stem and the other a "high speed" of a water balloon popping.
If anyone has questions on the setup for this please ask and I'll do my best to answer.
Week # 16, Theme: Glass, not necessarily windows
Strobist info-
Water ballon:

YN560 @1/64 in snoot

Bulb:
Canon 580ii @ 1/64 with gobo subject right
Also posting into Cliche Saturday as I think high speed shots are now pretty cliche!
