I recently watched X-Men: Apocalypse, where one of my favorite mutants, Psylocke, made her first big appearance. I felt inspired to do a darker photo afterwards, based on one of Psylocke's (past) abilities: teleportation through shadows. [read more...]

As many dogs do, Jasper developed a teleportation portal which can take him through both time and space. Last night he explored some European city. Its nice when you can bend physics to your will. 😉

Somewhat hidden, in a less spectacular side valley of the Moselle, and on an even less spectacular, almost boring hiking trail, you reach Eltz Castle, which is enthroned on a 70-metre-high rock. Its imposing appearance is due on the one hand to this, and on the other hand to its eight residential towers, up to 35 metres high, which make it stand out clearly from its surroundings. This truly impressive overall picture gives the feeling that one has arrived in the Middle Ages through teleportation.

Adrienne trembled, her breath ragged. She knelt next to Kayla and watched through the veil as the man in the black suit disappeared back inside. The air around her felt heavier, charged with the impossibility of what she had just witnessed.
“Okay, Kayla. I completely believe in shape-shifting lizards.”
Kayla’s expression was unreadable. “I’m sorry. I told you—but you have to see to believe. We were safe, but let’s not risk him coming back.” She reached for Adrienne’s hand. “Let’s jump.”
The world around them blinked, and suddenly, they were elsewhere.
Kayla’s smile was warm but firm. “Welcome to my shelter.”
Adrienne took a slow step forward, scanning the space. It was a cozy apartment-like setting—but something felt... off. “No windows?” she asked.
Kayla held another bottle of wine. “No windows. No doors. We’re a mile underground, surrounded by solid rock. The only way in or out is to jump. We are absolutely safe here.”
Adrienne sank into the sofa, her body still trembling, releasing a slow sigh. The quiet pop of the cork made her flinch.
Kayla poured a glass and handed it to her. “Take out your VDD and hold it in your hand.”
Adrienne set down her drink and obeyed, her fingers curling around the device.
“Now,” Kayla said, “think about activating it.”
A soft hum resonated through Adrienne’s palm, the device pulsing with light.
“Perfect.” Kayla’s gaze sharpened. “Now, focus on sitting in that chair over there... And don’t worry. If something happens, I can pull you back.”
Adrienne hesitated, then concentrated. In the blink of an eye, she was across the room setting in the chair. Her breath hitched.
“Wow,” she whispered.
Kayla nodded approvingly. “Now, think, focus, about sitting on the sofa again.”
The world blurred, then settled. Adrienne was back on the sofa.
Adrienne stared at the device, running her fingers over its warm surface. “Now, think about deactivating it.” Adrieene did. The hum and glow ceased.
Kayla took a sip of wine. “That’s your first teleportation lesson,” Kayla said with satisfaction. Put it away—and remember, it must stay on your person at all times.”
Adrienne exhaled deeply. Her muscles ached from the tension, the weight of the day pressing into her bones.
Kayla swirled her wine. “It’s been a very long day.”

On an ordinary day, Greeneye, my good friend from other worlds, made me an unexpected proposal: to teleport with him to his exotic planet. Excitement and curiosity began to pulse in my soul, but a wave of unease also crept in. In an instant, I found myself amidst a whirlwind of questions and emotions. Everything was spinning around me, and I felt lost, confused, as if I were in two places at once. I no longer knew which of my identities was real and which was just a shadow of a foreign world.
However, in the midst of this state of confusion and uncertainty, there was also a spark of courage and a desire for adventure. In my soul, the flame of daring ignited, and the thought of traveling alongside Greeneye became a challenge I wanted to accept. Perhaps it would be a journey full of unknowns and challenges, but with confidence in my own abilities and the support of my trusted friend, I am convinced that I will navigate this experience successfully.
So, with an open heart to adventure and the hope that light will overcome darkness, I am preparing to teleport to new horizons and discover the secrets of Greeneye's planet. What fascinating experiences and adventures await us there? Only time will tell!
Adrienne stirred, the scent of wine lingering in the thick underground air. Her eyelids felt heavy, her head throbbing with the dull ache of indulgence. What a weird dream… more like a nightmare.
She nuzzled into the warmth pressing against her side. Then realized she was waking up somewhere unfamiliar. Who had she gone home with this time? She shifted slightly and felt an arm draped over her waist, their bodies tangled in the deep cushions of the worn leather sofa. Relief washed over her as she realized she was still dressed. Then she turned—Kayla---and the nightmare rushed back into focus.
Kayla groaned beside her, stretching lazily. “Remind me,” she muttered, voice rough with sleep, “whose idea was it to finish that second bottle?”
Adrienne let out a low, tired laugh. “Yours.”
Kayla cracked one eye open and shot her a suspicious look. “Liar.”
Adrienne smirked, shifting onto her side to face her.
Kayla stirred, stretching before offering a small, knowing smile. “Did you sleep well?”
“I slept.” Adrienne rubbed her temples, willing away the weight pressing against her skull. She exhaled slowly, then muttered, “Tell me yesterday didn’t happen.”
Kayla’s gaze softened—ok but only for a second. “You need to practice.” Her voice was quieter now, more serious.
Adrienne sighed, pressing her fingers to her forehead. “I know. But maybe we could just lay here for a while longer.”
Kayla sat up, pulling Adrienne with her. “You did great with the teleportation last night, but you have to learn to focus. If you don’t land exactly where you intend to jump, we’re dead.”
Adrienne inhaled sharply through her nose, the weight of responsibility settling against her chest. She was learning, but learning wasn’t enough. She had to master it.
Kayla pressed a firm hand to Adrienne’s knee, grounding her. “You were born for this. It’s in your in your blood. Now, close your eyes.”
Adrienne felt the hum of her device start, a faint vibration against her skin. She obeyed, letting the quiet of the apartment wrap around her, pressing in but never suffocating.
“Find the thread,” Kayla continued. “Focus on a place—then feel the pull. Don’t chase it. Feel it.”
Adrienne inhaled deeply, centering herself. Focus. The place, the pull.
She felt it—faint, distant, like the whisper of something just beyond her grasp.
“Let it bring you to the edge,” Kayla murmured. “But don’t fall. Just stand there. Balance.”
The air shifted around her. The apartment walls grew thinner—like layers peeling apart, revealing glimpses of elsewhere. The scent of dust and old books filled her senses. The university library. The room. She could see it, smell it.
She was about to jump.
“Not here. Not now,” whispered Kayla. “Just to the edge.”
Adrienne’s breath hitched.
Kayla’s fingers pressed against her wrist, steadying her. “Hold it. Stay.”
Adrienne felt it—the pull, the tension—but she didn’t jump.
She controlled it.
Kayla exhaled, nodding in approval. “Come back to me.”
Adrienne slowly let go, her awareness settling back into the apartment. She rubbed her head. “Ouch.”
Kayla smiled, satisfaction flickering in her gaze. “That was perfect. I think you must remember from times past.”

A Mirror Image (in a plane mirror) is a reflected duplication of an object that appears almost identical, but is reversed in the direction perpendicular to the mirror surface. As an optical effect it results from reflection off from substances such as a mirror or water. It is also a concept in geometry and can be used as a conceptualization process for 3-D structures. Two-dimensional mirror images can be seen in the reflections of mirrors or other reflecting surfaces, or on a printed surface seen inside-out.
If we first look at an object that is effectively two-dimensional (such as the writing on a card) and then turn the card to face a mirror, the object turns through an angle of 180° and we see a left-right reversal in the mirror. In this example, it is the change in orientation rather than the mirror itself that causes the observed reversal. Another example is when we stand with our backs to the mirror and face an object that's in front of the mirror. Then we compare the object with its reflection by turning ourselves 180°, towards the mirror. Again we perceive a left-right reversal due to a change in our orientation. So, in these examples the mirror does not actually cause the observed reversals.
Trinity Bridge (Troitskiy Most) is a bascule bridge across the Neva in Saint Petersburg. It connects Kamennoostrovsky Prospect with Suvorov Square. It was the third permanent bridge across the Neva, built between 1897 and 1903 by the French firm Société de Construction des Batignolles. It is 582 meters (1,909 ft) long and 23.6 meters (77 ft) wide. The bridge takes its name from the Old Trinity Cathedral which used to stand at its northern end. In the 20th century, it was known as Equality Bridge (1918–1934) and Kirovsky Bridge (1934–1999).
In 1803, the Voskresensky ponton bridge, which was built in 1786 near Voskresensky Prospect (now Chernyshevsky Prospect), was moved to the Summer Garden. In 1825, the pontoon Suvorovsky Bridge was built to link Suvorov Square with Troitskaya (Trinity) Square. In 1892, a contest for constructing a permanent Troitsky Bridge was announced. There were 16 entrants from local and European engineers, including one from the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. The winner was the out-of-competition conception by Paul-Joseph Bodin aided by Arthur Flachet, Vincent Chabrol, and Claude Patouillard from the French Société de Construction des Batignolles. Some contributions to their proposal were provided by a team of local engineers. A special commission from the Imperial Academy of Arts, including Leon Benois also participated in the project. Construction began on 12 August 1897. Félix Faure, the president of France was present at the ceremony. In the same political spirit, Nicholas II laid the foundation stone for the Pont Alexandre III in Paris, another memorial to the Franco-Russian Alliance. The bridge was completed in 1903, in time for the 200-year anniversary of Saint Petersburg.
Originally the bridge had nine spans. Five of these were permanent metallic riveted spans, with novel console-arch-beam systems and gradually increasing span length from banks to the middle of the river. A three-arch granite viaduct linked the metallic central section to the right bank, and a two-winged bascule span joined it to the left bank. The design of the central spans, in which single uncut girders bridge more than one span, significantly relieves the stress on the central part of the arches, decreasing the support required in the river and giving the span structures a gentle arch shape. The bridge is decorated with cast iron gratings with artistic casting, granite pylons with lanterns and metallic three-colour lanterns in the Art Nouveau style. The obelisks flanking the entrance to the bridge from Suvorov Square were remodeled in 1955. In 1965–1967 the bascule span was rebuilt as a one-winged, lifting design. Its length was extended to 43 meters (141 ft) and its appearance modelled on the other metal spans. A granite arch slope was set on the left bank. During the reconstruction water slopes were enlarged and granite benches were set along left bank abutment.
Character Creation
The Shade (Richard Swift) is a comic book character developed in the 1940s for National Comics, first appearing in the pages of Flash Comics in a story titled "The Man Who Commanded the Night", scripted by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Hal Sharp.
Debuting as a villain, the Shade was best known for fighting against two generations of superheroes, most notably the Golden Age and Silver Age versions of the Flash.
He eventually became a mentor for Jack Knight, the son of the Golden Age Starman, Ted Knight, a hero the Shade had also fought.
Though portrayed in Silver Age comics as a thief with a cane that could manipulate shadows, the character was reinvented in 1994 as a morally ambiguous Victorian-era immortal who gained the ability to manipulate shadows and immortality from an unexplained mystical event.
In 2009, the Shade was ranked as IGN's 89th-greatest villain of all time.
The Shade appeared as a major character from the season 1 finale onwards in Stargirl, played by Jonathan Cake
Publication history
The Shade first appeared in Flash Comics #33 (September 1942), and was created by Gardner Fox and Harold Sharp.
Shade received a solo series in late 2011, written by Robinson and drawn by Cully Hamner, Darwyn Cooke, Javier Pulido, and others. It deals with Shade and his descendants, flashing back to various points in his life as he travels the globe trying to find who is behind a plot to kill him.
Fictional Character History
Origin
Born and raised in London, England in the early 1800s, Richard Swift was a wealthy importer. In the course of his business he came into contact with Simon Culp, who hired Swift to import a lion for him. The pair became friends while awaiting the arrival of the lion. It was soon revealed that Culp was merely using Swift in an effort to enact an arcane ritual; he captured Swift and attempted to use him as a sacrifice to the goddess Scathach. However, for reasons unknown, Swift was gifted with the powers that Culp had intended only for himself. The resultant mystical occurrence resulted in the deaths of over a hundred people. Bereft of all memories of who he had been, Swift departed his old life and was reborn as the Shade. Immediately after the events that gave him his powers, the disoriented Shade was taken in by Piers Ludlow, who attempted to take advantage of Shade's state by framing him for murder. Shade lashed out instinctively with his powers, making an enemy of the Ludlow family when he killed almost the entire family. Following this he embarked on a career of questionable legality, exploring the world and occasionally taking work as an assassin.
Golden Age
In his original Golden Age appearances, the Shade was portrayed as a villainous character. Primarily a thief, he utilized a cane that allowed him to manipulate shadows. He retained this characterization throughout the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages.
Modern Age
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Shade remained a villain for a few more years. Following Zero Hour his character was significantly rewritten. He was re-imagined as an immortal of Victorian extraction, and given a more morally ambiguous, anti-heroic bent. Much of his previous villainy was retconned as the influence of Culp. This version of the character no longer needed the magical cane to manipulate shadows, this trait became inherent.
Rebirth
Following the universal reboot, the powers of the Darklands, previously only semi-sentient, became fully sentient and autonomous. Shade himself became significantly less competent.
Flash of Two Worlds
Working with the Fiddler and the Thinker, Shade takes part in shifting Keystone City out of phase, trapping the inhabitants and causing the rest of the world to forget the city ever existed. They use this power to loot the city with impunity. They are confronted by both Jay Garrick and Barry Allen, and the heroes eventually defeat the Shade and his companions.
Starman
Shade first comes into contact with Starman when he abducts the hero's father, Ted Knight, at the behest of Mist. He soon turns against Mist and sides with Starman, later forming close ties with the O'Dare family, particularly Matt O'Dare. During their association Shade frequently engages in heroic behaviour to assist Jack and Matt. At one point he agrees to selflessly sell his soul to save those trapped in a cursed poster. Around this time he makes an enemy of Neron by refusing to accept the demon's deal to increase his own power. During the events of the Godwave his powers are completely unaffected by the event that depowered most powered individuals. Slowly but surely Culp is able to take control of Shade's body, culminating in an attempt to destroy Opal City, carried out with the sole intention of destroying the city that Shade loves. Joining Culp's efforts are Neron, one of the last remaining Ludlows, and Mist's daughter. Shade is able to expel Culp, but in so doing loses his powers. Despite this, he is able to use a shadow demon to engage in a battle of wills with Culp, which he ultimately wins. Stripping Culp of his powers and adding them to his own, Shade is victorious.
Infinite Crisis
Still in Opal City and acting as the city's heroic, if cynical, protector, Shade spends the Crisis defending the city and its inhabitants.
Cry For Justice
Shade tells Jay Garrick of Prometheus' plan to distract the heroes from his master plan, and travels with the hero to the Watchtower. There, they encounter Prometheus, who is attempting to flee the ship. As he is not a hero, Prometheus has no file on how to defeat Shade, and is confounded by how to deal with him. Donna Troy takes the opportunity to attack Prometheus and beats him nearly to death. Shade prevents her from killing the villain. He later aids Green Arrow in travelling to Prometheus' lair, where Green Arrow kills the villain.
Blackest Night
Now in a relationship with Hope O'Dare, Shade is attacked by Black Lantern David Knight. Due to his immortality, Shade is not killed when Knight rips his heart from his chest, and is able to resist the Black Lantern ring that attempts to attach itself to him. He traps Knight in the Darklands when Knight threatens to kill Jack and O'Dare. Using his own heart he traps Knight and banishes him permanently. He is found soon afterwards by Barry Allen and Hal Jordan, who ask for transportation to the Ghost Zone. He agrees to help, and they locate the rotting body of Prometheus in the Ghost Zone.
Brightest Day
Shade is sought by Jay Garrick, Doctor Mid-Nite, Sebastian Faust, and Wildcat, all of whom seek his assistance in locating Obsidian. He is found in his home in a comatose state, apparently placed there by the Starheart-possessed Obsidian, who wanted to stop Shade from revealing "secrets". Soon afterwards Shade is captured by Eclipso, who brainwashes him. At the behest of Saint Walker he is sought and rescued by Starman and Atom, who manage to free him of the brainwashing. He turns on his erstwhile captor, helping the heroes defeat Eclipso.
The Shade
Attacked at his home in Opal City, Shade sets off on a world-spanning quest to discover the origin of the assassination attempt. At the same time he explores his past, and encounters numerous figures that have been important in his long life, as well as exploring the extent of his own powers. It eventually becomes clear that the assassination was ordered by a member of his own family, Dudley, Lord Caldecott, acting in concert with an ancient cult. The cult accidentally unleashes ancient godlike beings on London, whom Shade is able to defeat by trapping them in a pocket dimension and transporting them back to their home dimension.
The Speed of Darkness
As Shade grows increasingly worried that he will return to his life of crime and jeopardize his relationship with Hope, his shadow powers take it upon themselves to begin committing crimes on his behalf. When this is discovered by Hope, who believes that Shade has relapsed, the shadows kidnap and brainwash her, and entrap Shade in the Darklands. He is able to push some shadow into Central City, where it attracts the attention of Kid Flash and the Flash, who come to his aid. They help him rescue Hope and regain control of the Darklands.
Powers and Abilities
Shade is the strongest known channeller of the shadow powers of the Darklands, a dimension of sentient darkness that he can channel to a variety of effects. He can also use this dimension to teleport himself and others, with no known limits to the distance he can travel; it can also be used to travel through time. He is functionally immortal and practically indestructible. He is intelligent and resourceful.
