SALT LAKE CITY — L3 Communication Systems-West presented an in-kind donation to the Utah Guard Sub-for-Santa program Dec. 6 at the Salt Lake Armory.
According to Capt. Noé Vázquez, director of the Sub-for-Santa program, donations from private citizens and organizations like this will ensure a more meaningful Christmas for military families in Utah who have indicated a need for support this year. As of Dec. 5, the Utah Guard Family Support Services office projects helping about 300 children during the holiday.
The Utah Guard Sub-for-Santa program was originated in 2003 after many community members realized the sacrifices that our Utah servicemembers were performing. The intent of the community members was to give back to military families, with deployed members and who were in need. Last year, the Sub-for-Santa program assisted nearly 400 children in need. While this program specifically assists those dependents of our Utah military who might go without during a holiday season, the program does accept general gifts for the parents or family gifts.
Sub for Santa is dedicated to helping people who cannot help themselves. An application process verifies that the donations go to the families who need it most. Applicants are also given the tools and resources with learning opportunities to help them better manage their money, time, and talents from a Family Assistance Center.

The PV panels are 205 watt Sanyo HIT, the cooling tower acts as a thermal chimney to keep the house cool in summer by having windows right around to suck out any heat in the house, and the hot water system is a three-panel Solahart thermosiphon system.

The yellow locomotive is Union Pacific Y1323. It was built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in 1975. It has a B-B configuration (two trucks, each with two powered axles), and generates power using an EMD 12-645E, 1500 hp (1.1 MW) V12 diesel engine. It was originally owned by the Chicago and North Western (locomotive number 1310) before being sold to the Missouri Pacific (locomotive number 15). The MP merged to become the Union Pacific.

We were commissioned by BAE Systems, the original manufacturer of the 155mm Lightweight Towed Howitzer M777, to fabricate a large scale Display / Trade Show model of its latest version - M777A2. We were required to develop and produce the model in 1:10 scale which was too large to use our digital tooling developed for 1:50 scale replica, and even twice larger 1:25 scale version. We had to redesign our 3D digital model completely in order to match it to the level of detailing and accuracy appropriate for a large scale.
The resulting model consists of almost 70 parts, highly detailed and complex. Masters of the parts were rapid prototyped by high resolution SLA. Most of the parts could be molded and replicated by resin casting. Some of the components, however, are so complex that can be only rapid prototyped in case additional copies will be needed.
The model is mounted on the mahogany finished base with custom nameplate and accompanied by clear protective cover and heavy duty transit case, both also custom made.
1:10 model became the largest, the most detailed, complex and spectacular in the series of M777A2 replicas.
