This was quite a challenge to process, to get the sunspots and the aircraft together I had to use the lasso tool in photoshop to outline the plane, then inverse so I could process the rest of the sun to bring out the spots etc. Also being only a single frame from the stack I didn't think there would be enough resolution to process the image, as we usually stack many hundreds of single frames to create a single photo.

Covering a whopping 2.4 miles of track and connecting the southern end of downtown Tampa to Ybor City (at $5 per adult passenger), the Tampa street car system is a paradox. While it's good to see my home town supporting some kind of 'light rail' or mass transit project, the focus on the 'kiddy ride' of the TECO Street Car System instead of truly viable, high-ridership intra-urban transit is really disappointing.

That said, the cars sure are fancy.

This is the front of the Aerosol Observing System (AOS), deployed on the Aurora Australis supply vessel for the Measurements of Aerosols, Radiation, and Clouds over the Southern Ocean (MARCUS) field campaign in 2017 and 2018. The AOS measures aerosol optical properties to better understand how particles interact with solar radiation and influence the Earth’s radiation balance.

We were commissioned by BAE Systems, the original manufacturer of the 155mm Lightweight Towed Howitzer M777, to fabricate a large scale Display / Trade Show model of its latest version - M777A2. We were required to develop and produce the model in 1:10 scale which was too large to use our digital tooling developed for 1:50 scale replica, and even twice larger 1:25 scale version. We had to redesign our 3D digital model completely in order to match it to the level of detailing and accuracy appropriate for a large scale.

The resulting model consists of almost 70 parts, highly detailed and complex. Masters of the parts were rapid prototyped by high resolution SLA. Most of the parts could be molded and replicated by resin casting. Some of the components, however, are so complex that can be only rapid prototyped in case additional copies will be needed.

The model is mounted on the mahogany finished base with custom nameplate and accompanied by clear protective cover and heavy duty transit case, both also custom made.

1:10 model became the largest, the most detailed, complex and spectacular in the series of M777A2 replicas.

This is a model of a toy they used to sell here. Look at the other foto's if you don't understand how it works.

All systems go for £4.2bn London super sewer

Contractors have started mobilising after mega contracts for the three main tunnel drives on the Thames Tideway project were signed off today.

Construction can now start next year following the confirmation of both the independent investors to finance and deliver the scheme and contract agreements on the 24km tunnel drive under London.

The deals signed with Bazalgette Tunnel Limited, the consortium of investors that holds the concession for the project, paves the way for project to start.

Thames Water also announced that strong competition for both construction and financing has driven down costs for five million London bill payers.

At the peak of construction Thames Tideway will create more than 9,000 direct and indirect jobs around 24 sites in the capital.

For the East works package the Costain, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche joint venture has signed off the contract at £605m, towards the lower end of the £500m-£800m estimate for this section.

Another three-way consortium consisting of Balfour Beatty, BAM Nuttall and Morgan Sindall has signed off the shorter western tunnel drive at a price of £416m, in the middlle of the £300m-£500m estimate.

A Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke joint venture secured the largest central section drive for £746m, against a £600m-£900m estimate.

Balfour Beatty willstart mobilisation work for the 6km West tunnel project in September 2015, with completion scheduled for 2022.

The trio of winning consortia will drive the 7.2m diameter tunnel under much of the route of the Thames from Acton in West London to Abbey Mills in the east.

Innovative engineering in the design phase has already reduced the tunnel from the initial 32km proposed, and reduced the number of construction sites needed from 45 to 24.

The tunnels will be dug with a gently sloping gradient, falling 1m for every 790m it travels at a depth up to 60m below the surface.

Rain showers approaching in from the east northeast or so, viewed from San Jose, CA by Fowler Creek Park. You can see the rain shafts here. A cold storm system had brought some unsettled weather to our area this day. A fast moving upper level low pressure system had moved down into southwestern California this day, bringing some rain showers even for our area here. Also, the cold and unstable air associated with the low was to bring the threat of thunderstorms to areas, especially around SoCal. Rainfall amounts across southwestern California are expected to be light and highly variable... Temps were expected to be quite cool, with highs only in the lower to mid 60s for the coast and valleys. This weather system was to move quickly away by the next day, resulting in generally clearing skies along with warmer temperatures across the region. (Wednesday, October 9, 2013; 11:56 a.m.)

The largest known cave system in the world, the Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System, as of 2022, has 426 miles of documented passages, and sits beneath the ground in Mammoth Cave National Park, established in 1941, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the only designation in the state of Kentucky. The park is also an International Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1990, and an International Dark Sky Park, designated in 2021. The Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System formed in Mississippian Limestone rock underneath a Big Clifty Sandstone cap, which has formed several stable arched passages of varying sizes from the intrusion of water into the rock layers, with the less porous sandstone cap preventing water intrusion at most locations, which have kept the caverns beneath intact and stable for eons. The water that passes through the cave system drains into the adjacent Green River, and has continuously eroded deeper into the rock along with the river. The cave is home to endemic species of organisms that have adapted to the dark conditions within the cave system. The cave system was known to indigenous people, whom mined gypsum from the walls of the caves and explored the caves, with human remains, signs of human activity, and artifacts from their presence in the cave. The cave became known to European settlers in the 1790s, and it started being mined by Valentine Simon for saltpeter to create gunpowder in 1798, with the mining activities intensifying around the time of the War of 1812, and becoming an industrial-scale operation under the ownership of Charles Wilkins and Hyman Gratz, whom used slave labor to exploit the cave’s resources. In 1838, with the decline in value of saltpeter, the cave was sold to Franklin Gorin, whom operated the cave as a tourist attraction, but was sold to Doctor John Croghan the following year. Under Gorin and Croghan, Black slaves served as tour guides for visitors, with Stephen Bishop being the most notable of these guides. Bishop made many maps of the caves during the 1840s and 1850s, and was the first known person to cross Bottomless Pit and discover the River Styx and Mammoth Dome on the other side. Croghan attempted to run a Tuberculosis Hospital within the cave in 1842-1843, believing the stable temperatures and air would assist patients, but this was short lived. In 1886, the Mammoth Cave Railroad was built between Park City and the historic Mammoth Cave Hotel, which operated until 1931. The caves were mapped more accurately by German visitor Max Kämper in 1908, whom mapped the surface topography and used instruments to document the cave, allowing for the opening of new entrances to the caverns from the surface and being the most accurate maps of the caves until the 1960s. Sadly, this was not appreciated by the Croghan family, whose historic cavern entrance was threatened in status by these maps, and Kämper returned to Germany, where he died as a soldier during World War I’s Battle of the Somme in 1916. Starting in the 1920s, the land around the caves was purchased by the private Mammoth Cave National Park Association, with the park being officially authorized in 1926. Between 1933 and 1942, the park’s landscape was reforested and infrastructure was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), part of the New Deal. Between 1954 and 1972, the cave system was further explored, culminating in the connection between the longer Flint Ridge System and wider Mammoth Cave being found, making it the longest known cave system in the world. Today, the park sees about half a million visitors annually, and contains the majority of the Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave system, with some portions of the system extending east of the park’s boundaries under privately-owned land.
