Heartland credit card processor is untrustworthy. They had a break in and let my credit card number get stolen.

For dinner tonight, since it was so hot & steamy, I whipped up a classic omelette recipe found in a vintage French cookbook. They were delicious, but required the use of many, many onions that had to be caramelized first...my eyes are still stinging, despite my having much earlier tossed said onions into the fridge to cut down on the pain! (FWIW, this *does* help, but needs to be done at least an hour ahead of time.) Anyhow, here's a peek into one of the kitchen linen drawers. My eyes can't take looking at a whole lot just yet! ;)

Western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system on Earth, with 426 miles known and mapped as of fall 2022. The name does not refer to the early discovery of fossil mastodon or mammoth bones here. Rather, the name refers to the immense size of many rooms and passages.

In caves, "breakdown" refers to all rocks that have detached from ceilings and upper walls. It does not include sediments deposited by fluvial action when subterranean rivers were present in passages.

All significant breakdown events in the Mammoth Cave system occurred not long after the water table lowered below each set of passages. Of the 6 or 7 levels at Mammoth Cave, the uppermost passages (Level A and Level B) are the oldest - they formed during the Pliocene. The bottom level (Level F) is the youngest, with subterranean rivers present today.

Minor breakdown events occurred during major historic earthquakes - for example, the December 1811-January 1812-February 1812 events along southeastern Missouri's New Madrid Fault Zone. Saltpeter mining was being conducted in Mammoth Cave at the time - "saltpeter" is an ingredient of gunpowder. Miners reported breakdown during the earthquakes.

In modern times, a decent-sized limestone slab detached from the ceiling of the Rotunda, a large, subcircular room near the Historic Entrance. This occurred during a fierce winter snow storm in January 1994. The park was closed, as was the entire state of Kentucky. The wind chill in Houchins Narrows, the passage between the Historic Entrance and the Rotunda, reached minus-41° Fahrenheit. Freeze-thaw processes affected the Rotunda room, resulting in the collapse of a large piece of Rotunda ceiling rock. The slab shattered into numerous pieces and damaged some of the 1810s saltpeter mining works. The broken slab remains where it fell. No one was in the cave during this event. The slab detached from the near-basal Beaver Bend Member of the Girkin Limestone (lower Upper Mississippian).

In January 2011, a tour guide heard a rock fall in the Rotunda-Audubon Avenue area. A new rock, pitted and sponge-like, was found in the middle of the tourist trail. That rock likely detached from the Bethel Member of the Girkin Limestone. In Mammoth Cave Ridge, the Bethel consists of crumbly, shaly, argillaceous limestones. In nearby Flint Ridge, the Bethel Member is a shale interval.

The rock mass shown above is called "Giant's Coffin". It is a large breakdown block in Main Cave, a giant canyon passage and the main trunk in Mammoth Cave Ridge. Stratigraphically, this is from the upper Ste. Genevieve Limestone (upper Middle Mississippian).

Behind Giant's Coffin is Dante's Gateway (= center-left part of photo), a passage that leads down to deeper levels (Level C and D). This section of cave is frequently visited during modern cave tours (e.g., Historic Tour, River Styx Tour, Violet City Tour, Star Chamber Tour).

Locality: Giant's Coffin, near Acute Angle, Main Cave, Mammoth Cave Ridge, Mammoth Cave National Park, western Kentucky, USA

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Agencies Need Better Information on the Use of Noncompetitive and Bridge Contracts

Note: Obligation amounts obtained from Federal Procurement Data System-Next Generation were adjusted for inflation using the fiscal year 2017 Gross Domestic Product Index.

Using a patent-pending technology, a proprietary print head attached to an ABB robot arm uses exclusive binder jetting technology to print sand molds and cores for the foundry industry. The proprietary system includes easy-to-use software that uses a CAD file to print a mold and core in just a few hours.

Foundries will appreciate the speed with which the system prints — and how fast their operation can be up and running with the new technology. What’s more, the RAM 123 uses less sand and is substantially less expensive than other sand casting 3D printers on the market today.

This disruptive technology brings a new way of production to foundries — instead of shipping castings around the world, raw materials are shipped and files are simply transmitted to 3D printers in strategic locations. The result is castings are poured the same day, only where you need them.

The Alsea Falls Trail System offers a connected network of roads and trails that currently provides a range of opportunities for mountain bikers. All trails are located between 800' and 1900' elevation, in a second growth forest surrounding Fall Creek, a tributary of the South Fork Alsea River.

The system includes several mountain bike "flow" trails that incorporate progressive trail design and construction techniques. Flow trails within the system maximize the fun of mountain biking by combining features like rolling terrain and bankeAlsea Falls Trail Systemd turns. Upper trails within the system have been designed to provide challenging features such as steep rock chutes and plenty of trail texture achieved through the placement of technical rock features.

At Alsea Falls, these trails are directional and are recommended for downhill travel only. All trails are rated by difficulty - download the Alsea Falls Trail System map for additional information.

The BLM and MTB Project are Connecting with Communities through a National partnership to provide an interactive ride experience. MTB project hosts the next generation of mountain bike trail maps. Click the MTB Project icon below to access all the information you’ll need to plan your next ride at the Alsea Falls Trail System.

Inside the Launch Abort System Facility (LASF) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, workers prepare to attach a crane to a test version of the Orion crew module on March 13, 2019. The Orion test module and the Launch Abort System will be used for the Orion Ascent Abort-2 (AA-2) Flight Test, a full-stress test of the LAS, scheduled for spring 2019. AA-2 will launch from Space Launch Complex 46, carrying a fully functional LAS and a 22,000-pound Orion test vehicle to an altitude of 31,000 feet and traveling at more than 1,000 miles an hour. The test will verify the LAS can steer the crew module and astronauts aboard to safety in the event of an issue with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket when the spacecraft is under the highest aerodynamic loads it will experience during a rapid climb into space. The Iditarod Trail is the only winter trail in the National Trails System and the only Congressionally-designated National Historic Trail in Alaska. The Iditarod National Historic Trail system is comprised of a 1,000-mile main trail between Seward and Nome, and an additional 1,400 miles of side/connecting trails that link communities and historic sites, or provide parallel route.

Congress established the Iditarod as a National Historic Trail in 1978. A May 17, 1978 Senate report noted that the trails comprising the Iditarod National Historic Trail “…offer a rich diversity of climate, terrain, scenery, wildlife, recreation and resources in an environment largely unchanged since the days of the stampeders. It is the isolated, primitive quality of this historical environment that makes the National Historic Iditarod Trail proposal unique. Nowhere in the National Trail System is there such an extensive landscape, so demanding of durability and skill during its winter season of travel. On the Iditarod, today’s adventurer can duplicate the experience and challenge of yesteryear.”

Today, BLM works with partners to maintain and promote the historic qualities that make the Iditarod unique among our nation’s National Historic Trails. As the designated Trail Administrator, BLM facilitates efforts by volunteers and local, state and federal agencies on behalf of the entire trail. BLM maintains about 120 miles of the trail, including five public shelter cabins. The trail segments that cross BLM-managed lands are managed as part of BLM's National Conservation Lands.

The most practical way to explore the trail is in the winter, when the hundreds of miles of swamps crossed by the Trail are frozen, making for easy passage. While offering outstanding opportunities for solitude, the Trail demands a high degree of self-reliance by the user, proficiency in extreme winter camping and travel by ski, dog team, snowmobile, or fat tire bike.

National Historic Trails are extended trails that closely follow a historic trail or route of travel that is of national significance. The BLM identifies and protects the historic routes, remnants, and artifacts for public use and enjoyment.

National Scenic Trails are continuous, extended trails that pass through areas with significant scenic, historic, natural, or cultural significance. They are managed by the BLM for outdoor recreation, conservation, and public enjoyment.

National Recreation Trails are located within parks, forests and other recreation areas and are reasonably accessible to urban or high-use areas. These trails are designated by the Secretary of the Interior or other delegated official.
