The Iditarod Trail is the only winter trail in the National Trails System and the only Congressionally-designated National Historic Trail in Alaska. The Iditarod National Historic Trail system is comprised of a 1,000-mile main trail between Seward and Nome, and an additional 1,400 miles of side/connecting trails that link communities and historic sites, or provide parallel route.
Congress established the Iditarod as a National Historic Trail in 1978. A May 17, 1978 Senate report noted that the trails comprising the Iditarod National Historic Trail “…offer a rich diversity of climate, terrain, scenery, wildlife, recreation and resources in an environment largely unchanged since the days of the stampeders. It is the isolated, primitive quality of this historical environment that makes the National Historic Iditarod Trail proposal unique. Nowhere in the National Trail System is there such an extensive landscape, so demanding of durability and skill during its winter season of travel. On the Iditarod, today’s adventurer can duplicate the experience and challenge of yesteryear.”
Today, BLM works with partners to maintain and promote the historic qualities that make the Iditarod unique among our nation’s National Historic Trails. As the designated Trail Administrator, BLM facilitates efforts by volunteers and local, state and federal agencies on behalf of the entire trail. BLM maintains about 120 miles of the trail, including five public shelter cabins. The trail segments that cross BLM-managed lands are managed as part of BLM's National Conservation Lands.
The most practical way to explore the trail is in the winter, when the hundreds of miles of swamps crossed by the Trail are frozen, making for easy passage. While offering outstanding opportunities for solitude, the Trail demands a high degree of self-reliance by the user, proficiency in extreme winter camping and travel by ski, dog team, snowmobile, or fat tire bike.

National Historic Trails are extended trails that closely follow a historic trail or route of travel that is of national significance. The BLM identifies and protects the historic routes, remnants, and artifacts for public use and enjoyment.
National Scenic Trails are continuous, extended trails that pass through areas with significant scenic, historic, natural, or cultural significance. They are managed by the BLM for outdoor recreation, conservation, and public enjoyment.
National Recreation Trails are located within parks, forests and other recreation areas and are reasonably accessible to urban or high-use areas. These trails are designated by the Secretary of the Interior or other delegated official.

The translation between architectural design and the subsequent actualization process is mediated by various tools and techniques that allow design teams, fabricators and installers to engage the materiality of architecture. Over the past decade advances in material development have been catalyzed by increasingly robust implementations of digital design and fabrication techniques that have empowered designers through digital modeling, simulation, and the increasingly digital augmentation of all physical processes. Creative applications of material related technologies have produced new forms of expression in architecture, triggered a debate on digital ornament, and continue to advance the performative aspects of buildings. Yet we are only at the beginning of a new age of digital materiality…
The exhibition positions material systems as combinations of design technologies with material processing and manipulation environments. Material systems are positioned as central to a research based design enquiry that capitalizes on opportunities that emerge when craft-based knowledge is synthesized with CNC-machines, robotic technologies, additive manufacturing and material science. This year’s course will focus on ceramic systems and includes a collaboration with the Harvard Ceramics Program in Allston (consultant: Kathy King). The course builds on years of collaborative research by the Material Processes and Systems (MaP+S) group at the GSD. Ceramics is the first ever material created by mankind – it is omnipresent in the craft-studio as well as in high-volume manufacturing environments. Pleasing to the touch and easily manipulated by hand, it can just as easily be subject to digital technologies and robotic approaches. While ceramic-specific aspects of material design and manipulation will be taught emphasis is on understanding ceramics as a microcosm of material research that offers insights which transfer to work with almost any material used in architecture.
The course is supported by a grant from ASCER Tile of Spain. A selection of project will also be shown at the 2018 CEVISAMA in Valencia, Spain.

Testing AWD Systems at 0 Degrees
I went to Mt. Crested Butte in Colorado. The coldest place in Colorado. Why did we go there? Because we wanted to test some all wheel drive systems and find out whether they are worthy of being in your driveway. You are unlikely ever to do what we are about to...
Just a gas piston I thought up, the only major differences from any other gas piston is the ports to siphon the gas escaping from the front.

In 2008 NYCDOT unveiled the first project of its temporary art program through the collaborative efforts of the DUMBO Business Improvement District, artist Tattfoo Tan and more than 50 local schoolchildren. The Malaysian-born artist enlisted in the help of the children to paint hundreds of colorful panels using specialized paints matched to the colors of fruits and vegetables. The tapestry of color – 8 feet high and 70 feet long – beautified a corrugated metal fence alongside a storage yard beneath the Manhattan Bridge.

Not very exciting but you can see Saturn, Mars and the star Spica in a triangle this week. And hopefully Curiosity lands safely on one of those tonight!
It’s been a week since Tesla unveiled its Powerwall battery system for homes and businesses. Elon Musk – CEO – mentioned that they already received 38,000 reservations for the home system and 2,500 reservations for the much bigger, commercial-scale battery systems.
