The Belfry of Bruges (The Belfort Tower or Belfry) was built in several stages between the XIII and XV centuries. It symbolizes the independence of Bruges.

The tower is 83 meters heigh and leans to the left. To get to the top one has to climb 366 steps. (No, I didn’t climb to the top!)

The carillon consists of 47 bells of various sizes.

With bright, striking colors, red dahlias symbolize perseverance and the ability to overcome. They serve as a reminder of the inner strength everyone possesses, even in dark times. Therefore, they’re the perfect gift for someone who is going through a rough patch or recovering from an illness.

The neat thing is that not all dahlias have the same meaning. Both the flower color and location play a role in determining what a dahlia means. Some dahlia flower meanings include inner strength, positive change, and commitment. By mixing and matching the different types of dahlia flowers, you can create a bouquet that sends just the message you’re looking for.

The world’s oldest living rose is believed to be 1,000 years old. It grows on the wall of the Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany and its presence is documented since A.D. 815. According to the legend, the rosebush symbolizes the prosperity of the city of Hildesheim; as long as it flourishes, Hildesheim will not decline. In 1945 allied bombers destroyed the cathedral, yet the bush survived. Its roots remained intact beneath the debris, and soon the bush was growing strong again.

Dahlias have been a floral favourite for generations and it’s easy to see why. Their bright blooms, vast variation, and heart-warming history make these flowers special in many ways. Here are 17 facts about Dahlias.

1. There are currently 42 species of Dahlias

2. Dahlias were the favourite flower of the court of Queen Victoria and Marie Antoinette.

3. When the Dahlia was initially discovered, it was declared a vegetable, due to the fact that the tubers are edible. However, whilst the tubers were part of an Aztec diet, the Dahlia delicacy failed to take off in Europe.

4. Dahlias peak from Mid-Summer, which is later than a lot of other flowers making them a great way to extend your summer flower displays.

5. Dahlias can be found in almost any colour; however, you will not find a blue one. This is not due to a lack of trying; Breeders are still trying to discover a way of creating these blue blooms.

6. Not only is the Dahlia the National flower of Mexico, but it is also the official flower of both San Francisco and Seattle.

7. Depending on the variety, Dahlias can be dainty or daunting and can grow to be 35cm in diameter. Dwarf varieties are great for flower beds, whilst some giant varieties have been known to grow to over 6m tall.

8. The first Double Flower Dahlias varieties were bred in 1815.

9. The Dahlia was first recorded by Westerners back in 1615. Back then they were called by their original name which was Acoctli

10. Dahlias are officially part of the Asteraceae family. This flower family includes some favourites including Asters, Daisies. Sunflowers and Chrysanthemums. These flowers are classed as part of this family due to their astral appearance. The word Asteraeceae derives from the Greek word for star. This is a reference to flowers that resemble a star with surrounding rays.

Totems del Nahuel Huapi:

22 carved pine logs.

0.70m in diameter x 3m each

The work consists of two wooden replicas installed on the shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, in the area of the Cathedral Church. They were made by the Chilean artist Bernardo Oyarzun within the program INSITU –Art in the Public Space Bariloche 2012/13.

These are two buried wooden sculptures -about two and a half meters high above ground level-, which symbolize the Mapuche man and woman, looking towards the East, where life comes from, according to said culture.

It is common to find this type of totems in the neighboring country of Chile, in the regions with the greatest presence of this culture, that is, from the Maule region to the south. In Temuco, for example, they say that four figures were used to seal the 'armistice' between that original people and the State of Chile, in the middle of the 20th century.

They represent the mythical ancestors of the Mapuche people who always appear as a couple. To place them, the local Mapuche chiefs approached the artist and gave him prior indications: it had to be done before dawn and place them facing East. Later, more figures were added in different parts of the city, mystical totems, guardians of the depths of the lake and of the earth.

All together this monument exists of 160 poles, symbolizes an old village which disappeared in the sea (from 1792 AD).

Elephants are gentle giants, who show great care toward their herd, offspring and elders. This symbolizes responsibility, determination and loyalty. Patience: Elephants are also a symbol for keeping calm and having patience as elephants are generally calm and mellow creatures, unless their young or herd is threatened

Most African elephants are diurnal though some herds who live near human populations have become mostly nocturnal to avoid human interactions.

Grass symbolizes for me both vulnerability and resilience. Grass rarely grows solitary, so even if you think you are alone, it rarely is so. All together grass symbolizes for me strength and if needed a peaceful fight for what is right.

Just followed my intuition.

Chinese palaces, temples and mansions have on their roofs a special kind of ornaments called wenshou or zoomorphic ornaments, some on the main ridges and some on the sloping and branch ridges.

The monstrous thing at either end of the main ridge, called chiwen, appears roughly like the tail of a fish. Fierce and formidable, it looks as if it were ready to devour the whole ridge; so it is also known as tunjishou or the ridge-devouring beast. It is, according to Chinese mythology, one of the sons of the Dragon King who rules the seas. It is said to be able to stir up waves and change them into rains.

So ancient Chinese put a chiwen at either end of the main ridge for its magic powers to conjure up a downpour to put out any fire that might break out. But for fear that it might gobble up the ridge, they transfixed it on the roof with a sword.

At the end of the sloping and branch ridges there are often a string of smaller animals, their sizes and numbers being decided by the status of the owner of the building in the feudal hierarchy.

These small animals were also believed to be capable of putting out fires. While this can be easily dismissed as superstition, they do add to the grandeur and magnificence of the imperial buildings.

“Hiding Behind A Mask" symbolizes the concealment of the ego behind an artificial mask.

Masking is a process in which an individual changes or "masks" their natural personality. Depending on who they are with, what they are facing, and the situation at which they stand.

It is important to acknowledge that it is not really us within the mask, it is more like a disguise to conceal the true nature of the individual.

In some cases, people can identify too strongly with it, and they might believe that they are the mask they carry.

Portcullis House (PCH) is an office building in Westminster, London, England, that was commissioned in 1992 and opened in 2001 to provide offices for 213 members of parliament and their staff. Part of the Parliamentary Estate, the building augments limited space in the Palace of Westminster and surroundings. The building is named after the chained portcullis used to symbolize the Houses of Parliament on letterheads and official documents. Portcullis House accommodates about one third of members of parliament.

"Planting a Japanese maple tree in your garden traditionally symbolizes the welcoming of autumn as a friend. The Japanese phrase "momiki-gari" translates to "maple viewing" or "maple hunting," which refers to the ritual visitation to the mountains each fall to view the brilliance of wild maple trees. In Asian art, star-shaped leaves of the Japanese maple trees are often paired with deer, as both are common symbols of the arrival of autumn."

In the language of flowers, succulents symbolize enduring and timeless love. Since I live in the desert there are not many flowers that do not come from the cacti or succulent plants.

Succulents are often confused for cacti. Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. What makes a cactus a cactus is basically its thorns. Succulents are plants that store water in their thick leaves and stems.

In Feng shui, succulent plants symbolize money and gold, neither of which I see in my yard! Perhaps they could use a bit more water.

I am so amazed that this succulent, with triple digit temps, still manages to produce these pure white 5 petal flowers.

In this poignant capture, a small brick road winds its way through a humble Pakistani village, Dharmatchi in Chakwal, where predominantly impoverished residents find solace and strength in their close-knit community. The focal point of the photograph is a weathered brick wall, standing tall and resilient, symbolizing the perseverance of the people who call this village home. Beyond the wall lies a lush, green field, serving as a reminder of the potential and possibilities that await those who tread this path with determination and unwavering hope.

SYMBOLIC OF THE LILY OF THE VALLEY

This flower symbolizes absolute purity, freshness, sincerity and discretion. But most importantly, she symbolizes happiness. This beautiful meaning immediately makes it very important to give a bunch of lilies of the valley to someone you love on May 1.

My neighbor's, and they do attract a lot of butterflies.

However, because of the special interest mosquitoes have on me, I could never think of sitting near them and waiting for that perfect butterfly moment. Just a few minutes out that evening, I was kissed multiple times.

Yes I could always apply repellent but nothing could completely stop their love for me!

So, the Buddha is sometimes depicted sitting on a Lotus flower, symbolizing the one who overcame the pain that prevails in the material world and became enlightened. Just like the Lotus flower which starts to grow in the dirty and muddy water but manages to surpass the water and produce a perfect flower.

What does the lotus flower mean in Buddhism?

purity

In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents the purity of the body, speech, and mind, as if floating above the murky waters of material attachment and physical desire. According to legend, Gautama Buddha's first steps made lotus flowers appear everywhere he stepped.
