A view of the electrical switchyard/substation at the Allen S. King Generating Plant. Lines leaving the facility spiderweb across the Twin Cities Metro area, making up the regional 345kV and 115kV grid, linking multiple plants and substations together.

50 3689 awaits departure with a freight train into direction of Niederwiesa. In background Karl-Marx-Stadt Hilbersdorf switch yard can be seen, which was an automatically working switchyard built in 1930s. When switching, the cars were not moved by locos, but by very small and flat cars, running between normal rails, which were driven by steel cables. For security reasons, these cars gave a constant ringing sound while moving, giving this switchyard a very unique atmosphere. The very few remaining parts of the yard are now a museum: www.technikmuseum-seilablaufanlage.de/en/home.html. Scanned ORWO slide.

An Am 841 of the Olten construction management in the St. Margrethen switchyard. The shunting locomotives from 1996–97 were mainly used for construction services. They will soon be decommissioned. Five of them were converted by Müller Frauenfeld to Aeam 841 and are hardly recognizable. They were originally supposed to be put into service by the end of this year. Of the remaining Am 841s, those that cannot be sold will be scrapped. Switzerland, November 5, 2025.

A day at the switchyard.

A few additional photos of the new shunting locomotive in St. Margrethen as long as everything is still new and clean. The three-axle hybrid locomotive does not have a pantograph. A diesel engine charges the batteries, if necessary while driving, speed 2000 rpm. In the cooling phase with 1000 rpm. The range on a solo trip depends on the amount of diesel. But under load with freight cars the range is limited, which leads to criticism. Fetching empty freight cars from Buchs to Heerbrugg won't work. There are still briefings of the staff and only a few practical operations. Switzerland, Nov 2, 2021. (1/14)

On the rear incoming train, a side wall was torn off at one of the cars. A carriage of the other train derailed with one axle and was slashed open. Other cars sustained rather minor damage. Switzerland, November 10, 2022. (3/11)

The H3 008-7 in operation for the St. Margrethen shunting team in Heerbrugg. Freight trains to and from the Widnau industrial area are shunted here every day. Heerbrugg does not have a switchyard, but has an additional track alongside the passenger traffic and a few sidings. Switzerland, December 20, 2022.

A brand new hybrid locomotive for the St. Margrethen shunting team. The locomotive has been around since 2014, but this one is factory-fresh. The hybrid locomotive has a 350 kW diesel generator and batteries. The diesel generator charges the battery and can also drive the electric motor directly for peak loads. However, it can also run in battery-only mode. Even before coming it was rumored that it would not meet the requirements in terms of performance. Fetching empty freight cars from Buchs to Heerbrugg won't work. Let's see how it works in practical use. Currently, training rides are still conducted in St. Margrethen and Heerbrugg. On the west side of Chur train station, the platform of tracks 9 and 10 extends for 100 m towards the switchyard. This platform with a length of 535 m is also the border between the narrow gauge of RhB on the left and the normal gauge of SBB on the right. The SBB does not carry passenger traffic on this side, only rail cargo to Ems-Chemie. On the right side there is the loading station for the mail trains. Switzerland, July 10, 2021.

The disconnector is used to isolate part of a live network so as to allow access to it without danger. This disconnector was used in the Beauharnois power station switchyard and had the function of isolating the turbine-generator unit from the network.
