DL&W Switchback lower switch. Middle track is at my feet, the switch is to my right, and Ewa is pointing at the lower track. I'm standing on the culvert that goes underneath both tracks.

Pano from the last switchback of the set; uphill is to the right.

A double-ended cable car tackles the Vann Ness Avenue switchback, with a view of one of the spans of the Bay Bridge in the far distance.

The road down into Shafer Canyon is just a bit winding.

This caught my eye - I've never seen a train behave like this before.

We were on a high spot overlooking Wells, Nevada where we were trying to find "bars" (data).

We looped up through Utah into and across Idaho, then back down across the northeast corner of Nevada.

June 27: Ruby Mountains - Moving to Angel Creek, investigating Angel Lake

On the Great Ocean Road, across from the beach, dirt road struggling to stay on the side of the hill.

The trail was like this: gentle ascent on a paved trail, slight rise on a winding trail, up and down beside steep cliffs, switchbacks on the side of a steep hill, murderous stairs up to a tunnel, pitch black tunnel through the edge of the crater, rusted metal spiral staircase in a cement shaft, opening to stunning views and a gunner's perch, more winding trail and stairs up to a viewpoint on the edge of the crater. It was all worth it for the views. All 350 plus stairs.

Venturing was officially created by the Boy Scouts of America's executive board on February 9, 1998.

How old are our Venturers, anyway? Our age chart is almost a perfect bell curve with 17 being the highest point. Eighteen is next, followed by 16. There are actually more 19-year-olds than 14-year-olds. Because Venturing is very challenging and usually involves ambitious travel, it lends itself more to older teens.

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Stinger is a continuous 7/8" thick steel plate welded on site. The folded plate tread assembly is mechanically attached to the stringer on site. Steel bar handrail is then site welded to the tread/riser.

Note my hiking companion on the trail ahead.

DL&W Switchback lower switch. This culvert is going underneath both the middle and lower tracks. You can see the height difference quite plainly.

DL&W Switchback lower switch. Signal base on the left, culvert about halfway into the picture, with the location of the switch somewhere beyond the evergreens. No sign of it, even though the railbed is quite clear.

We had some difficulty finding the trail at the end of Independence Lake that leads to North Lake via a steep climb up 24 switchbacks. The views and tarns and flowers along the trail were compensation for the steep slopes on a hot and humid day. The remains of fireweed slant up the hill on the right, an enormous cedar is in the middle and Devil's Ridge is beyond.

Unrecorded site adjacent to the switchbacks. Bedrock mortars (visible in the image) and a red cross (where Mark is preparing to photograph). June 1980
