- www.kevin-palmer.com - The Switchback Trail is a steep path in the Olympic Mountains that starts from Hurricane Ridge and leads up to Klahhane Ridge. I was running down the trail since I was short on time when I sprained my ankle. It made the rest of my trip painful, but now I can say I got injured while running in the Olympics.

This road is intimidating in a vehicle, but the cyclist zooming towards me has a steep descent in front of him. From here he’ll make his way down the switchbacks you can see to the left, and ultimately to the far right below. One brave cyclist even passed our bus on this winding road, not for the faint of heart!

The switchback at the little town of Hagan VA is the only one left on a main line railroad. The Tennessee/Virginia state line crosses over the ridge that the railroad tunnel bores through.

As a hiker, I'm always happy when the trail switchbacks up a steep slope instead of going straight up hill.

We normally see quartz lines in a much straighter pattern. So I found these switchbacks quite interesting to see.
