Loved the way this branch grew back on itself to drape over the trail. Taken in Hillock Wood, Buckinghamshire.
The winding road back down the mountain had many switchbacks. Many bicyclists made the arduous climb to the top of Lookout Mountain, and must have had a speedy ride back down.

From a recent hike out near Bessemer Mountain in North Bend, Washington. This area was ravaged by a mudslide but seems to be in recovery mode. If anything, it seemed to have helped pull the natural red/orange colors out of the underlying rocks.

We traveled the Shafer Trail Road on the switchbacks for a 1500 foot drop down to the White Rim above the Colorado River. The road was originally a trail improved in 1880's by the Shafer brothers who used it to move cattle from the top of the mesa down to winter grazing. The Trail was further improved in the 1950's as a road for uranium mining. It's still an exciting and challenging drive.
We drove into the Colorado River Canyon on the Potash Road to the Shafer Trail Road; then up the Shafer Switchbacks to the canyon rim. Both roads are rough four wheel drive roads. The switchbacks are often very narrow and require negotiation with other drivers to pass.
Switchbacks down the ridge lead to the Bagley Lakes and our ride. Mount Shuksan was attempting to hide in the clouds.
Pikes Peak Highway is full of switchbacks, something that I love whether it is hiking or driving.

The Molesworth switchback came in handy on our trip down into the valley. We at least had a place to back up to when an approaching ute and a unimog with horses were met on the road.
Love the bow in the truck of this beech as its branches seem to pulling against the pull of the gradient. Taken on the slopes of The Hangings at Whiteleaf Woods, Buckinghamshire.
GMTX 3311 shuffles coal hoppers around at a coal loadout in Switchback, WV along the NS Pocahontas District.
It's a 3.6 miles round trip hike to Scott Lookout with a vertical climb over 1,000 feet. After an easy flat beginning on sandy ground, it turns to concrete and begins to wind its way up the hillside. With long switchbacks, the turns provide a great place to catch your breath and take in the scenery around you.
We hiked to Scott Lookout and then continued on to Angels Landing, a technical route in Zion National Park with steep drop-offs and very narrow sections. It's generally considered a highly challenging route and should only be attempted by experienced adventurers.
This photo was taken on our way down (I'm guessing about half-vertical-way) from Scott Lookout. The hike down was so much easier. 😁
Happy weekend to everyone; your visit is much appreciated!!!🌹🌹🌹
After doubling its train FCCA 1027 waits while the brakeros reconnect the airhoses and releases the handbrakes before proceeding up the Cacray switchbacks in San Mateo, Peru.
I took this shot early this morning at Point Defiance Park in the fog.

After dropping a covered hopper at the Agway in Whitney Point, New York, Susquehanna C420 2002 is negotiating the switchback to the Syracuse Branch. The twisted profile of the switch seems to be inviting derailments.

Eastbound 18W passes the classic angle at Switchback, West Virginia, headed up the Elkhorn grade with the Lackawanna heritage in the lead.
It seems that all of Italy is straight up or straight down. To get to our hotel on Capri required either a funicular ride up a steep hill or a convertible trek up winding roads. As an alternative one may (if one is in excellent shape) opt to walk.
Looking down from above I'm happy I had alternatives.
Artwork in Haggerston Station, London Overground.
A panel adjacent to the work describes it as follows:
The Elliptical Switchback (2010) is by artist Tod Hanson. It takes its inspiration from the work of former Haggerston resident Edmond Halley, the 17th century astronomer. Best known for predicting the return of the eponymous comet, Halley also made extensive studies to explain Earth's magnetic anomalies. One theory held that the Earth was in fact hollow and composed of further concentric rotating spheres, each with their own atmosphere and magnetic pole.
Hanson's design creates a series of 'worlds within worlds' through a clever use of trompe l'oeil. The compass needle recalls the north/south orientation of the station's track and the elliptical orbit of Halley's comet acts to unify and animate the artwork.
I've seen very few people capture movements in the deep woods on the former Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley's Laurel Line, earlier this week i made a trek down the former Erie to the switchback in Moosic. LL1 is climbing the switchback before shoving up to Vycom to switch out plastic hoppers. This would be the first run that used just the two EL twins which have been completely repainted into the vintage Erie Lackawanna maroon and grey.
On a gloomy winter morning, T091-16’s pair of veteran CW44’s shove 90 Eastman loads from Creech up toward the middle tail track of Hagans Switchback. They’ll finish negotiating the last active mainline switchback in the country with the help of the C201 Loyall Pusher, that was abolished a few months after this photo was taken.

The Burr Road travels down over 800 feet in a series of switchbacks in a half mile to join the Notom Road.
Mill B South Trail to Lakes Blanche and Florence; Twin Peaks Wilderness, Utah; October 2017
When I hike to Blanche in the snow, I don't get this view because the winter trail tends to skip the last few switchbacks, climbing up the very steep slope straight ahead instead, so hiking from summer to fall is a treat. For most of its run, Mill B South isn't an exceptional trail like some others I've been on. It sticks to the bottom of the canyon and just kind of funnels up and up. But once the switchbacks end and this view opens up, it's as good as it gets.
Westbound NS 277 drops down the west side of Elkhorn Grade at Switchback, West Virginia this afternoon in a good pocket of fall color. Color seems to be very hit and miss in these parts, with vibrant spots like this and others being well past peak.
