A westbound crude oil train switches tracks at CP Leets in Leetsdale, Pa. By now the snow had stopped falling, but it was still a gloomy day. The bridge offers a nice view, but you have to dodge traffic to stand here and photograph.
This little SW unit is used to switch the Auto unloading facility. It was neat to see a small switcher working, you don't get to see that a whole lot anymore.

This is a VERY simple puppet, to switch from winter to summer, and vica versa, just turn her inside out!

These two have coordinating colors, so I just had to get pictures of them together!

With nothing to switch. All the rails and ties are gone now. They're in that big pile I shot earlier behind those big trees down the line in this pic.
as the flowering of the principal host Potentilla verna is well progressed, apparently Andrena potentillae is switching to Fragaria sp. growing profusely at the same location.

Switching scenes--a major highlight of our trip was the Fimmvorduhals hike, which is a 14-mile, 3500-foot climb ranked by some as one of the world's greatest hikes, if not the best hike. You start by walking past about 25 enormous waterfalls one after the other for 5 miles; then walk on two different glaciers, at the base of Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused air traffic stoppages for a month in Europe. In 2010. There we walked through lave fields and hills (several hundred feet high) that were all of four years old. Walking on new land was just incredible--land that our guides promise just wasn't there prior to 2010.
The hike ended with a 5-mile descent into a green-yellow, flowery grouping of hills and huge glacial rivers in an area called Thorsmork. We had to use chains and ropes. The kids made it all the way just fine though.
Here, the kids are pausing to overturn rocks and feel (and sometimes see) warm/hot air coming out of the soil with the magma chamber not far below the surface.
Electricity came to Luppitt in 1959, and the church was connected that same year. The previous oil lights were replaced; I'm not sure whether these are original switches or later fitment.
At the same time, the heating system was fitted with a pump, instead of relying on the original thermosyphon circulation. That original pump is still in place fifty two years later (although I did overhaul it about eight years ago): quite a tribute to traditional British engineering.
