It’s hard to believe that boys like this were forced to climb inside chimneys to sweep them but it happened back in Victorian times. Sweeps are the origin of the Hastings Jack-in-the-Green festival, which recalls the days when they would hold parades in London and covered themselves with garlands of leaves. This tradition spread to other towns, including Hastings, before eventually dying out due to complaints of misbehaviour.
In 1983 Mad Jack’s Morris in Hastings (now known as RX Morris) revived the tradition and it is now a major event in the town’s calendar, attracting thousands of visitors on May Bank Holiday weekend.
