Arid conditions prevail at Coxmoor Golf Club after many weeks of warm dry weather which is set to become hotter. It was touching 29c when I took these shots. The greens and tees are watered but the fairways and rough are tinder dry with no prospect of rain any time soon.

Brierley Forest Park was officially opened in May 1994.

Originally a former colliery site, Brierley Forest Park has been transformed into a wildlife haven with nature walks covering over two miles. The Park also provides recreation facilities including a football pitch and children’s play area, a sculpture trail, areas of local historical interest, as well as a visitor centre.

Wildflower meadows have been sown with native species such as yarrow and ox-eye daisy, and wetland areas created.

A wide variety of wildlife flourishes in the park, for example a large population of skylarks nest on the former spoil tip. Other residents include foxes, owls, meadow pipits and lapwings.

On the 7th September I was lucky enough to get invited along to Little Princess Trust's Pink Car Rally.

It was the 1st day of the 6th annual pink car rally to raise money for real hair wigs for people with cancer.

All in all, it was a fantastic start to the rally, with day 1 starting at ESP Cars, Long Eaton (Nottinghamshire) and finishing up at Kingsmill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield (Nottinghamshire)

I had to settle for a trip on a StarRider on my return to Matlock, and this was the one that did the job. After its two years at Maun, it saw out its life with East Midland at Mansfield and later Chesterfield, lasting there until 2001.

I paid a rare return visit to the town of my birth, Sutton-in-Ashfield and saw that the Denman's Bottoms [as the downstairs bar was always called] is up for sale. This was a regular haunt for me in the 80s, before I moved to London. I remember it had something of a rough reputation [no surprise that for a Sutton pub], but I always liked the atmosphere and got on with some of the characters in there. As ever, it's the odd little details about a place that you particularly recall, like the faded poster of a naked Roy 'Chubby' Brown [a balloon thankfully strategically placed] on a pillar or the huge St Bernard dog that would sprawl out slobbering next to the bar.

The pub dates from about 1750, was originally called the King's Head and gets its current name from a famous lawyer, Thomas Denman, who successfully defended Queen Caroline in the scandal of 1820.

Yardleys Garage was a Burmah filling station until the year 2000 when the brand disappeared.

Today all that remains are the tank ventilator pipes and studs from where the totem pole stood which I think was left from the Burmah days.

The totem can be seen all throughout the street view era although modified.
