Trent 552 is pulling out of Sutton-in-Ashfield bus station. It is a Leyland National 11351A/1R which was new in 1977 as Cheltenham District (later Cheltenham & Gloucester Omnibus) 3045.

It was later acquired by MASS Transit for its operation in Lincoln.

The park is mainly comprised of grassed areas with areas of woodland and avenues of trees. The lake is located in the south east of the park, and is well used by anglers and walkers. Rumbles café is located to the west of the site and is located close to the play areas, a skate park, ball court and outdoor gym. The site also has bowling and tennis clubs.

The Lawn Pleasure Grounds encompass the grounds of the former Sutton Hall, built as the residence of Samuel Unwin, a merchant hosier, and the land associated with his nearby Cotton Spinning Mill and Mill Lake. Sutton Hall and most of the Mill complex no longer exist, but the Mill ruins and adjacent lake form the focal feature of the park today.

I visited this box on 25 July 1966. It was the only box I went in that day, see my "boxes visited" log

After my visit and before closure the Up Outer Home (lever number 2) was removed and the Up Distant moved nearer to the box. Points 14 & 16 were removed along with associated signals. The Goods Yard was still in use, after the through running closure to Kirkby South Junction, by the engineering firm based there (Helical Bar Ltd). Subsequently, in 1980 the Company bought the land, see Catalogue description, National Archives, Kew www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52489345052/in/album-...

Dates:

4 September 1916 - Route opened but the opening notice infers block section is Mansfield Station to Kirkby South Junction.

2 April 1917 - Station opening date and also assumed box opening date. A signalling sketch for the box as it opened is here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52490352698/in/album-...

The box name was actually "Sutton-in-Ashfield". I have added (GN) to the Index to differentiate it from the Central box, on the former Mansfield Railway.

I have a hand drawn diagram of the line between Summit Colliery and Sutton Town, dated 19 July 1946. www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52488780345/in/album-...

Also one between Sutton Town and Skegby Junction, dated 19 July 1946. www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52488860098/in/album-...

Both these diagrams show the arrangements for single line working using the down line if the up line was obstructed. These were part of a set given to me during a visit to Summit Colliery box. The diagrams are believed to have been used by a Guard.

Some dates:

8 February 1897 - Opened when line reached here, Saxby & Farmer 4" Duplex Tappet frame.

xx-xx-1947 - Oddicroft Ground Frame (Barringers/Metal Box) added.

25 May 1968 - (Saturday) Closed after the last train.

Not sure why there was a large block of spare levers in the box. The GNR were considering building its own branch to Skegby (Sutton) Colliery. However that didn't happen and anyway 14 spares levers would seem to be too many for that. Owen seems to recall reading that there may have been some other railway scheme proposed that would have joined the GNR here but, like so many schemes, it never happened and we have no information on that - does anyone else have any info??

Peter offers the thought that maybe the GNR simply ordered a batch of similar sized frames because they were probably cheaper than providing bespoke frames?

Incidentally, lever 34 would have been a Down Home signal protecting the Down platform.

There was an Up Starting signal on the footbridge at the platform end, as to whether it was the Up Starter and the next signal was an Advance Starter I do not know, they were very close and it is suspected that it was merely a repeater signal because it would be difficult to see the Starter through the bridge?

I didn't take any photos of the box and I haven't been able to find a close up of the box - can anyone help me with that?

I have, though, included my photo of the box which is part of the Elizabethan Railway Society's (ERS) 00 gauge layout called "Sutton-in-Ashfield". The photo can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52487866772/in/album-...

On 25 July 1966 I took a photo of 76051 shunting the Metal Box train in the sidings with the (as now known) Priestic Primary School providing the backdrop. The school is still there so, in 2019, I decided to produce a "Then & Now" montage shot. That can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/192151030@N08/52488361941/in/album-...

An interesting little article here from Datsun Dealer - £300 must have been a tidy sum back then. I imagine this must have been proper signwriting too, no vinyl graphics here.

LWE280P in that classic turquoise colour lasted the typical 10yrs so commonly found with Datsuns of this era, DVLA saying it came off the road in 1986. Wonder how long it lasted with John Booth?

Seen on the A38 at Sutton-in-Ashfield on 01-03-12, travelling northbound is this ambulance for the East Midlands Ambulance service, Peugeot Boxer, BX11 DJF. I was pleased to take this in the glorious sunshine considering the very dull day I had in Sheffield the day before :-(

Some ex Road Car Spryte Darts found their way to Mansfield from Lincoln last year, as some of the native ones were withdrawn. For their age, they're very nippy, clocking in at fourteen years old!!

In the wake of Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, I took the opportunity to nip over to Kings Mill Viaduct Waterfall, this morning and I'm glad that I did. I reckon that this is the heaviest flow that I have seen, there!

The expansion of the facilities on-site at the Sherwood Observatory, on Coxmoor Road, is now approaching completion. Reading up on the state-of-the-art Planetarium, it sounds like a fascinating project.

Brierley Forest Park was officially opened in May 1994.

Originally a former colliery site, Brierley Forest Park has been transformed into a wildlife haven with nature walks covering over two miles. The Park also provides recreation facilities including a football pitch and children’s play area, a sculpture trail, areas of local historical interest, as well as a visitor centre.

Wildflower meadows have been sown with native species such as yarrow and ox-eye daisy, and wetland areas created.

A wide variety of wildlife flourishes in the park, for example a large population of skylarks nest on the former spoil tip. Other residents include foxes, owls, meadow pipits and lapwings.

Maun had just completed delivery of three Mercedes Benz 811D / Optare StarRiders for their Crich-based service runs, and I had a short run round Crich in this one, before it set off back to Belper.

It passed into Stagecoach ownership in 1990, when East Midland acquired Maun's bus operations, so had a spell in Stagecoach stripes, but its final years were spent over the water in southern Ireland.

On the day of the launch party in Mansfield Market Place on 19-07-12, looking splendid in it's new 'the threes' livery is this Optare Versa, YJ12 PHZ, 814, from Sunday 22-07-12 this service will run every 10 minutes between Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, (during daytime hours Mon-Sat), there are 18 new buses for this route, with an investment by trentbarton of over £2million, pretty good considering we are in a recession! There are lots of lovely finishing touches to these vehicles that make them that little bit more special, well done trentbarton!
